UM Canes recruit Brandon Powell disappointed in bowl, but "excited'' about reporting to UM on Jan. 8

ORLANDO -- I just got off the phone with University of Miami recruit Brandon Powell, a four-star running back who played for Deerfield Beach High School. Powell is graduating early to report to the Canes on Jan. 8th so he can start college and participate in spring practice.

He said he has cleared through the NCAA and just needs to get a copy of his transcript from DBHS after the winter break ends.

"I’m really excited because I start college soon and just to be on campus and get an early start, that can really help me,'' Powell told me. "It’s really beneficial. I get to learn the plays early, get a lot of reps, get bigger and faster."

Powell said he's 5-9 and weighs 170.

Powell watched the game on TV with his dad and grandmother.

"They started off the first series and it was good,'' he said, referring to the safety that occurred when Deon Bush sacked Teddy Bridgewater. "I was pumped up. But they couldn’t move the ball on offense and I thought ‘what’s happening?’ I thought they were going to crank it up after halftime but they just couldn’t do anything.’’

Despite the disappointing  loss, Powell said he can't wait to begin his upcoming career with the Hurricanes.

"I committed to Miami because I feel like I can get on the field and play,'' Powell said. "After watching the bowl game and knowing that Duke [Johnson] is out, I feel like even more I can go out and help."

Powell, who said he also visited Tennessee, West Virginia and Nebraska, said he was most comfortable with the UM staff and players. He said he's "looking forward to learning from Duke Johnson and Dallas Crawford."

What message would he like to give to fellow recruits who were upset after the bowl game?

"Al Golden knows what he’s doing. He’s getting all those kids from South Florida. He’s getting the program back.

   "Coach Golden plays freshmen."

goldie is a lousy recruiter. A 170 lb player is not ready for big time college football and never will be.

goldie failed not only in all three phases of the football game, offense, defense and special teams, but he also failed to have canes in shape physically and psyched up mentally. NEVER has any team been able to out speed Miami. But Louisville made Miami look like it was walking through the whole game.

And even though it has been proven over and over and over for years and many, many games, both goldie and d'o continued their worthless prevent the win, bend and break, 3 down linemen, LBs 5 yards off the LOS, no stopping the run up the middle, no stopping the end run, no effective pass run because 3 down linemen can NOT stop a running back or a QB with 6 blockers. Simple math. 3 down tired Cane def. linemen versus 6 Louisville blockers. How stupid really are goldie and d'o?????

Same old bend and finally break, prevent the win zones with every team moving the ball down the field. And then, dumbass goldie says the defense was on the field for too much of the game. Welllll hellooooooo. Duhhhhhhh.

Morris is a great QB. But how can he pass with defensive players in his face when all that goldie and his staff and fat offensive players did for the last month is eat, eat, eat? No short passes over the middle, no slant passes in or out, just flat go no where passes and hail mary wasted passes. No big, punishing full back. Just little ole number 25 getting hammered every run play with no blocking.

This last season, Miami played and beat no body teams including UNC and WF. Morris pulled those two wins out in the last minute of the games. Otherwise, goldie this season would be 7-6.

Hey BofT, fire shalalala, fire the AG, fire golden and the entire staff. Then, get back with me. I turned off the game at halftime because since the early 70s, I have never seen such a piss poor job of coaching. Miami football is dead. And you just lost more in person attendance. Miami is going to be the team to be invited for homecomings so the other team is guaranteed a win.

Strange, how Coach Strong and his staff take all those THREE-STAR and TWO-STAR former H.S. players and defeat mighty Florida and mighty Miami, Florida.

Yeah, yeah the Cardinal has their fair share of 4-Star prep players on their roster.

However, the PAST FOUR seasons the Hurricanes have had HIGHER RANKED incoming prep player's than Louisville. Go figure.

@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

I feel U loyal, staunch Hurricane fan.

And I left buffalo wild wings at the CONCLUSION of the 3rd quarter last night!

When I have NEVER stopped watching a Cane game. Even the MOLESTATION at the hands of Virginia in 2007.

Hurricanes previous two bowl game losses in 2008 and 2009.

California 24, Hurricanes 17

Wisconsin 20, Hurricanes 14

And the frigid Sun Bowl game don't matter because U Know Who wasn't pacing the cold, cold sidelines. hUh

FWIW... those particular Miami teams scored more points than last night and those particular Miami squads WASN'T MOLESTED on national television. Go bloody figures'.

Nevertheless, the Canes will continue to win and win and win.

TRAGICALLY, those winning campaigns ain't going to be the " 11-1 " or dare I say, undefeated sort of winning seasons.

And I'll let major college football history be my judge. hUh

Heya Zook, you never answered, because you can't.

"4-4, 5-3, 5-3 in the weak coastal div. 3 OOC wins against highschool teams. One "signature" win vs. a historically bad UF. Dead last in ACC on defense, near the bottom nationally...AGAIN, minus the OOC conference highschool games. How is that improvement? 7-5 TO 9-4, WHERE 3 OF THE W's are illusory.. And the defeats? Minus the FSU beating, all not even close...

I said earlier in the year that this team was essentially the same as last year's, I retract and posit that this team was worse.

The record improvement is illusory and you know it.

Tell me, Zook..."

beedharphong, U was correct about Louisville handing the Canes a total MOLESTATION and what not.

And I absolutely thought the Hurricanes would play a competitive game against the Cardinal. Go figure. Especially with FOUR WEEKS to get ready for Louisville. I guess Goldie nd' Mark Mark spent too much time recruiting and what not.

can someone put together a "best of" zook's comments throught eh last off season til now?

oh. wait.

His next comment will be the same one.
But really. It would be great.

Zook, ag has done some good things here, but he is not the man for the job. I really don't understand your fealty towards him in particular. Maybe it's AG himself!?

You may be a very nice person, but like the other Confederacy of Dunces (aka Haters) you have not one clue about football, and in particular, how close the Miami Hurricane football program came to being the 30 year SMU story. The NCAA had a very good plan, but ran into the best coach in college football as they were on their way to killing the program and he whipped their collective arses.

Again, your kind moaned and cried that Butch Davis should have been fired and swore he was a terrible coach. Your kind also started in on Jimmy Johnson before he got his program going. Finally, your kind savaged Larry Coker immediately after he won a National Championship whining that he didn't win in the style that met your insane, foolish criteria.

Al Golden is going to win National Championships--the only question is--will he be winning those Championships at Miami or with some other program due to the dunces running him off...Time will tell, yet, should he leave Miami football will become irrelevant for a decade or more, if not longer as no qualified coach would even consider taking the Miami job...that's a 100% guarantee!!

Man, if we hired Charlie Strong, guy would be the Black Mack Brown.
Just saying""" Winning ALL recruiting battles!

Goldie can't win the state of Florida how the he!! He gonna win a nc?

He ain't even the best coach in the state, and you talk about being the best in the country?

All the recruits in the world won't make up for incompetent coaching.....three weeks to prepare and the team comes out flat, prime opportunity to win the division as predicted by the writers and the team lays an egg, 18 returning starters and the players look lost. Last night was a reflection of everything wrong with this staff

^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Wrong again!! You're another one who has no idea what he's watching during Canes games.

The defense came out very strong, organized with a very good game plan. Early on they stuffed Louisville's running game and controlled Teddy, who by the way is considered by many to be the best QB in college football and the potential first pick in the upcoming NFL draft.

Unfortunately, Art Kehoe could not make the necessary adjustments to overcome the new defensive game plan that Charlie Strong implemented, thus with most every series being a 3 and out for the Canes Miami's defense simply wore out. Additionally, the loss of Duke, Waters and a clearly hobbled Hurns Miami's offense was dead in the water, which meant game, set and match.

The final score doesn't mean jack shyt and is only faux fodder for the whiners/haters/complainers/dunces.

Butch Davis first 5 years at Miami:
8-3, 9-3, 5-6, 9-3, 9-4

Sixth year: 11-1

What if Davis had been fired after the third season? Or the fourth season?

The kids Golden gets today are going to be contending for championships two seasons from now. Some of you are too short sighted to see anything beyond last night. Point blank, Miami's players aren't very good. Golden is recruiting like a maniac so season five will be the big one.

Another rock hit and THE WORST POSTER IN ALL OF COLLEGE FOOTBALL RELATED BLOGGING is back for another long golden shower from his favorite spigot.

Don't forget to gargle and ask for a tour of the showers at Happy Valley Ganes fans!

There is too much talent in S. Fla for the Canes to ever be irrelevant, but your love for Goldilocks far supersedes your love for Miami, if you have any at all. Canes fans fall in love with coaches who bring us NC's. Butch left for the NFL on his own accord, JJ caught heat for losing 5 games, and rightfully so, Coker ran a Ferrari into the ground.......gtfoh with your coach worship for a guy who had three weeks to prepare and laid an egg. To even suggest that Miami will never win without Golden is an insult to the talent we have here and other coaches around the country. Miami has survived numerous coaching changes, and we can certainly do better than a guy who doesn't have the integrity to do what's best for the program as opposed to what's best for his best friend. You're the running joke of this blog, and you have the nerve to show your face after last night? No true Cane fan would ever question Miami's ability to regain our rightful spot in college football, it's obvious you're not from down here, as you attack the fan base constantly. True canes fans know, understand, and appreciate that we are a fan base that demands and expects excellence, we understand times have been tough, but 500 yards a game is inexcusable, playing with no passion is inexcusable, getting drummed with the same 5-6 basic plays is inexcusable, but all you have are excuses for Goldilocks. Anything in that 300 page binder about exactly when we'll return to national prominence, yeah that's what I thought! If Goldilocks can't handle the heat he's not Canes material......which many have been saying on this blog fo a while. I hope you follow goldilocks to the pedophile state blogs because you're no canes fan, you're a sad pathetic little troll obsessed with raising canes videos.

Happy new year to all my chicos, Zoe's, and bruhs that parked on somebody's lawn back in the day....we know Canes football when we see it.

Don't worry Jerome, we'll purge this pedophile state imposter soon enough

Linksys, that's the same comments we read two years ago, and the year before that, and so on. It's always the next guys coming in will make a difference, and they don't. All the good rated qb's, and they never add up. It's because they aren't coached, period. You can take 22 5 star players, and with this coaching staff, they will look lost and confused as ours do now. If the coach can't teach the kids to work together, even their own assignments, it won't matter the rating. A good coach would show results after three years. NO one expects to be champs at this point, but getting blown out EVERY time we play a winning team, that's on Golden. Period

Zook in case you didn't know, both sides of the ball sucked!

College Football Gamecast - Miami (FL) vs Louisville http://scores.espn.go.com/ncf/gamecast?gameId=333620097&version=mobile&appsrc=sc&ex_cid=espnapi_internal&gcSection=boxscore

Btw who's responsible for the overall game plan? To my knowledge it's the hc!

I suppose all the yards gained by UL is fodder as well. I get it Zook is D'Nofrio's wife. Dude ain't even man enough to fight for himself, he sends his lady to fight for him! Lmao

I know this fool ain't going after Kehoe, the same Kehoe who coached McKinney, Bret Romberg, Joaquin said dominate Gonzalez, and countless other UM all-Americans, you expose yourself as an outsider more and more every day

The "cloud" had #17 and 98 in pass coverage!!

Com'on son!!

What would Strong do with those 2 guys?? Prolly the same thing he does with 2-3 star players.

You know Burgess Sr had to be happy and sad at the same time watching his 3 star son decapitate DC, but watch his alma get destroyed in 4 of the last 6 games..

This report is all wrong. If I read this comment section correctly all current commits must be leaving now that we lost a meaningless bowl game and we are going out to hire an all new staff. The top candidates for the job are all the experts here. It's amazing such a deep pool of coaching and administrative talent resides in a comment section of a blog. I hope you've got your resumes and references in order, your phones will be blowing up soon! The world didn't end last night and the rebuild will continue.
Posted by: CinciCaneFan

Watch out now. You're making too much sense. I've been asking for resumes for years. These know-it-alls are just negative Nancy's. Always has been. Always will be. They rely on college kids making them happy or not.

Even more pathetic than the game was reading Golden's press comments. That guy doesn't say anything when he answers. Politicians give more info than he does. It is very doubtful Golden will make changes, ones that count anyways. It shows these players don't believe in the staff here. UM got the death penalty, his name is AL GOLDEN, aka the grim reaper.

why would golden go to penn state who are still under the NCAA watchful eye

Nobody suggested that all kids would decommit, but that a few cold after last nights showing. There will always be kids who want to go to UM, like Duke because the love for Miami is deep if you're from Miami, browsed, palm beach, hell I had friends in college who were from Maine, Jersey, and Conneticut that love Miami.

Perhaps you didn't see the quote from one of our BTW recruits who said: "damn when the qb scrambles find the man closest to you, they teach that in high school". So yes it's possible that we may lose recruits if high school kids are calling out the lack of fundamentals displayed last night, maybe they come because they feel they can play early, but nobody suggested that all kids would decommit. Try again. Maybe these know it all see mediocre play, uninspired play, and poor schematics when we see it, like I said try again

Meaningless bowl game, when is a game where they keep score meaningless? See how you've accepted mediocrity. Smh

Now go back and compare recruiting classes, depth, coaching talent, etc.

You guys' shallow research does nothing for me. Dig deeper. Show off your analytical skillz. This looks like an elementary school research paper.

Rob Chudzinski could be unemployed after the season. I know Golden won't leave or be fired, but that would be a great hire for this program even if it's only a year or two. Golden SHOULD give up some of his pay, he isn't earning it anyway. This program needs a shot in the arm by a talented young guy like Chud.
Schiano denies interest in PSU job, Titans coach interested also. I am praying they take Golden and his cohorts.

Golden isn't pulling a Ponzi scheme, but he sure doing a con job on UM. The guy can't coach.

With the good things Golden and his staff do, this remains the greatest concern for UM. I don't think these guys have what it takes...

Then again, expectations are very high. A 9 - 4 ain't bad. It is the failure to step up during the 4 losses and compete effectively, as if you want to win the game and put yourself in the position to do it. Make plays, etc.

If it is a matter of talent, then recruiting will help. If it is a matter of coaching, we will see the same patterns.

The Canes have been taken down by good teams. UF gave us a gift with Driskel, but the others beat us. A new QB may help on the offense. Morris regressed.

Glad big #46 is staying.

Coaching is my concern, and you see a pattern that these coaches can not fix. They are too rigid and don't understand players from the south and what motivates them to play hard and free.

At PSU, Schiano would be good. We are stuck with D-NO and Golden. Whoever coaches the secondary is terrible, although it may be the stupid zone that doesn't work, and doesn't "get fixed." We have some good young hitters back there.

Despite all the "get it fixed" talk. it does not happen. The D did do a great job against the run though. The O was an embarassment.

AG and D CORCH NEED TO GET THE HELL OUT OF DODGE!!

Duh dumb d,

Used to think Calvin or gallo dumbest person here but you've managed to undercut them

I predicted a Louisville victory. I was surprised by how few points we scored. I wasn't surprised at how many they scored.

No idea who you predicted would win. You are obviously surprised we gave up 36 points. Given that's fewer than usual and to a better offensive team, not sure how that surprise is possible for anyone with an iq over 40.

Man are you dumb.

Golden isn't pulling a Ponzi scheme, but he sure doing a con job on UM. The guy can't coach.

There you go again making completely absurd, clueless comments...Miami was irrelevant for 50 years in this hotbed of recruiting.

The best analogy is SMU who put powerhouses teams on the field until the NCAA stomped them into the ground as they tried to do to Al Golden and the Canes.

And by the way, SMU is also located in a hotbed of recruiting, yet for the last 25 years they have been irrelevant due to the NCAA's actions.

Miami has NEVER survived a coaching change after a Randy Shannon type era followed-up with the NCAA smothering the program for 3 straight years. And that includes what Butch Davis had to endure after the Pell Grant fraud.

Even after the Coker firing coaches from around the country wouldn't touch the Canes job, which is why they ended up with Shannon, along with Donna wanting to give a very good man an opportunity.

After Randy was fired it was tragic how many well known coaches scoffed at the idea of coaching the Canes as they all remembered how Butch was treated and were appalled that Coker was fired after the record he posted, but here again Donna had no choice as the Confederacy of Dunces (aka Haters--meaning you!!) made it impossible for the man to recruit locally any longer as all the kids and parents were scared off the program based on the comments by nitwits calling themselves Canes fans.

Now for the real issue...you are no Canes fan--you are a good time Charlie that's always there for the team so long as they are winning every game. The instant the program hits a rough patch you fold your yellow pea stained tent and start belittling the program and its coaches.

One more thing you twerp...I wasn't parking on Chico's lawn, because I was busy playing on the field in the Bowl!!

Only F-O-O-L-S akin to that ron DORK and 360cane and like-minded MINIONS would FOOLISHLY believe, that Goldie nd' Mark Mark will win a conference championship or play in a national chamipionship at the "U".

Green Bay and Chicago are showing what it's like to be desperate for a win. I'm glad because this is making me forget about that disaster last night.

So, Zook, I am a nice guy, thanks. But you still addressed none of my points; rather you made sweeping generalizations about what type of fan I represent, per usual. You then made more sweeping generalizations about the usual 'insurmountable obstacle' excuses AG has overcome, and the 'just you wait' conclusion.

I was so sad to see BD go, was thrilled with Coker until after we had clearly run outta players and brawled with FIU, Loved the RS hire and even gave him the BOTD until midway through his last season.

So, spare me.

When it becomes abundantly clear that the coaches can't or won't develop talent and implement schemes that work, I decline further support.

You are right in the regard that I am not skilled enough, nor do I have FB playing experience to be hired or an expert.

I am just a fan.

One who shouldn't, by your own and the other homers' criteria, be able to so effectively predict what will happen and why, in many of the games that we have been blown out in - this year and last. When I can predict that we won't convert on third, won't stop them on third, and then I come within a touchdown of the score for opposition and basically why, then there is evidence that something bad is amiss.

You're right, I shouldn't be able to call it like I have been for the second half of this season.

That I can and have is all the proof one needs to say, gee, that dufus even sees what's wrong; something's wrong.

When the stats and the eyball test against the blowouts we suffered over the last two years show no improvement, when the record improvement REALLY, REALLY, only reflects the benefits of the easiest schedule in a decade, and when a staff has a month to prepare for the worst loss since the Peach Bowl Romp by LSU, then yeah, this nonexpert, mere comment blogger, isn't doing anything other than stating the obvious.

Like I have repeatedly pointed out before in this blog, heck, I have been attacked for it, it's somewhere in the middle as to the causes...

Up to this point I had weighed the truths that the NCAA mess was a significant factor in not bringing in the best of the best, yet... YET!, AG managed to score remarkably good classes and retain some competitive talent from RS's regime, but in EVERY big game against equal or better talent, we have been BLOWN OUT, the exception being what turned out to be a historically bad UF team.

That our offense has become a slight variation of a predictable, zone run, zone run, deep ball, punt...with a screen thrown in for good measure...is pitiful. That we have not tried to get the ball into the sort of schemes that tore our defense up all year may be a limitation of SMO's actual ability, but last night? was just the straw that breaks this camel's back.

The defense?! Do I really need to belabour the point on how bad our defense is, regardless of talent or doing okay for a half against equal or better opponents?

AG has been exposed. We are stuck with Slick Al, unless PSU bails us out, which is unlikely, and we may not even get a coordinator change...

Every frickin year for a decade now, at this point of the year, YOUR kind assure us that we just need a bit of this or that, ignoring what has become painfully obvious; instead you feel backed into a corner and lash out and "throw good money after bad", double down on the rhetoric that satisfies your confirmation bias, and...wash. rinse. repeat.

I don't hate you or need to call you names or get into your personal life, but I do have the urge to tell you you should be a bit more honest about this whole program's situation AS IT REALLY IS.

Ooooooooookay now Zook says he was a player......rotflmfao! Thanks I needed the laugh after that pathetic display last night. Wow, trying to give yourself some credibility by telling us you played for the Canes......I'm literally in tears! Keep exposing yourself.

And now he's pretending to stick up for Randy after saying Randy ruined the program! Lmfao! Dude you're a joke. I know you weren't parking on any lawns, outsiders were always afraid to come to that part of town.......dude said he played for the Canes! Lmfao, y'all hear this? Please keep talking, I'm loving this.

I like the offense under fisch. Coley and his team were learning each other all year. Morris had to learn a diffrent system and it showed. That and morris got injured early and was never the same after. Once duke johnson got hurt the offense just wasn't the same. They also lost dorsett for huge part of year and scott, While stacey coley looks explosive and stepped up is a freshman. Waters was a good player but got h urt also. The fact is coley deserves a second year with a diffrent qb to see what he can do. What is going on on d isn't about scheme. We just don't have the d line horses especially at dt to be a great defense. We have to rush 5 or more usually to get pressure and when we did guys like highsmith and kacy rodgers lost coverage alot of times leaving guys wide open. So once coach d gets top talent then will see if his schemes can work but with the d line talent we currently have due to poor recruiting prior to golden and ncaa investigation scaring away guys like keith bryant have been forced to piece together a dl that was mediocre at best at dt.

There's a report that Rob Chudzinski will b fired after only one season in Cleveland. Please bring him back here to b OC.

Hey "Real Canes Fans"[tm]

Can you HONESTLY say that AG got the MOST out of his players this year?

I can't.

Ask the same about Orgeron or Malzan.

You know what Maine? Good points. The reality is, your scenario is the one that is going to play out, regardless of any wishes otherwise.

We're stuck to wait and see. As always, I will be happy to be proven wrong, I just don't think I will be...and that sucks.

Btw after Butch brought us back to national prominence we loved Butch and were upset that he left, Coker was run off for getting progressively worst, Shannon was let go after a disappointing 7-6 season, and that ugly lost to USF. You obviously know nothing about Canes football or history. Modern day Canes football started with Schnelly and we have been relevant since then, u are so damn clueless.

Zook never addresses what you say, just enjoy mocking him, the whole blog is laughing at him, because you know he's the greatest blogger ever. Dude said he was on the field! Lmao. Somebody copy that statement please so we can throw it in his face for laughs.

Chud won't go from nfl head coach to college oc. We woukd have to makw him a head coach. Guy is going to get nfl oc offers like crazy.

If Chud wants HC position give it to him. It can't be any worse than the last 10 yrs of Hurricane football.

Just to be fair, you should compare three years vs three years. That would be: RS 21-15 vs AG 22-15. That's no bowl in 2007 and bowl losses in 08 and 09. AG has qualified for a bowl game every year and an ACC championship game. So technically that could be three more loses for AG..and probably would be.

@Harriet
Don't try to act like you know me. I went to canes games for 30 years before I was moved out of the country. I went to games this year.. did you? I've supported every Canes coach until they proved they couldn't coach. Coker, Shannon, and maybe even AG soon. I've been hanging around this blog since probably 07.. have you? I just don't have the same black and white attitude you have. I try to look for the grey and give the coaches a chance to show me something. I don't see the problem with the current Canes as all coaching. I see glaring weaknesses that can't be covered by any sort of scheme because all that does is expose another weakness. NO scheme can cover a weak defensive line and line backing core. We all saw last night the same weakness the Canes have had for years exacerbated by a play making, extremely accurate quarterback. We saw the same thing we've seen from Morris all year long exacerbated by a defensive line that could actually bring massive pressure. Could there have been a better plan last night? Yes. Would it have made that much of a difference? No. The players were there all night on defense, Louisville just made the plays.
Do I think AG should be fired? No. I think he deserves at least the four years RS got. I will hold judgement until I see how the incoming class does. Trust me, I'll be around all next year also. We can discuss it more then if the absurdity on this blog slows down.

AGAIN, butch Davis left the Hurricane football program because the university President and the B. of T. DIDN'T want to pay Mr. Davis the FAIR MARKET RATE for his head coaching services. NO but's, if's or may be's.

Correcting your lies is a fulltime job:

More from Bruce Feldman's article of December 11, 2013:

Davis' explanation for what was behind his departure from UM: "Ten days before we played BC [Boston College] in the last game of the season, we had completed 97 percent of the contract. It had taken us three hours to agree to the money. That was done. The 80/20 payout was the problem."
