Al Golden's silence a reminder this is all just business

Commitment.

That's the one word that gets thrown around more than any other in college football.

Yet, as we've come to realize, it means absolutely nothing.

Al Golden used the word right after the Hurricanes got embarrassed by Louisville a little more than a week ago in the Russell Athletic Bowl. And he meant it.

"I made a commitment to get it done and we're going to fight our asses off until we get it done," Golden said of returning the Hurricanes to dominance.

Now, less than 10 days later, we're sitting here wondering if he's leaving for his alma mater Penn State. So are his bosses, assistant coaches, players and recruits.

"We don't know anything yet," President Donna Shalala told the Miami Herald in an email.

Golden? Not a peep, which says his commitment and his loyalty is really only to himself and his family.

We all know this of course. We're not naive. We all have priorities. If you were in Al's shoes and your alma mater came calling, offering more money, offering a heroes welcome, you would have to listen at least.

And maybe that's all this is. Maybe Golden won't be leaving anywhere.

After all, Penn State is reportedly interviewing Mike Munchak and James Franklin today. Maybe Al isn't sure he'd be better off back where he met his wife Kelly. Maybe being the next Joe Paterno isn't his thing. Maybe he wants to jump from Miami to the NFL and aspires to be the next Bill Belichick.

Only Al and his people know.

What does Al want us to know? Nothing. His silence speaks for itself. It reminds us people in college football can use the word commitment one day and change their minds the next. All anyone is really going to do is what's best for themselves from one decision to the next. And there's nothing wrong with that. That's real life.

In the end, if Al stays at Miami, it's going to be hard for some to believe just how committed he really is to this program. And the truth is that's really what was maybe Golden's most likable quality wasn't it? The fact he was, in his words, "going to fight [his] ass off until we get it done."

That commitment to standing by Miami's side through the NCAA mess. We loved that. The idea he was going to dig his feet into the ground, recruit his butt off and take Miami back to the top. Many Canes fans -- after a 7-0 start and rise to a No. 7 ranking -- were completely buying in.

Not so much anymore of course. They want his best bud, defensive coordinator Mark D'Onofrio, out of here. Get rid of him or you can go with him Al, many say.

If Al leaves, which many outside the program seem to think he will, the next guy will be expected to pick up right where he left off. Since the Canes went 9-4 this year, the next guy has to secure that Top 10 recruiting class, and then win the Coastal Division. No excuses. To not accomplish that would mean failure.

The good news for Hurricanes fans is that if Al leaves there are  hungry, interested coaches out there who could accomplish that.

Mario Cristobal would be the first person I would call. Yeah, Cristobal left for a better paying Alabama job after Al gave him one when FIU dumped him.

But can you imagine anyone "fighting his ass off" for Miami -- his alma mater -- harder than Cristobal? He still hasn't tasted that NFL money, still hasn't really proven himself. He would work to get to that point.

And that's really what this Miami job has always been about. It doesn't pay enough to be a place where someone settles in for the long haul. It never has been. In it's most successful days it's always been the springboard to then next big, better paying job.

Some are saying Rob Chudzinski, Greg Schiano and Butch Davis would be great options. Tommy Tuberville might be too. But I'd call Mario first.

The only commitment you would need from Cristobal is what this program has really always been about and needed. That's a commitment to winning and winning big.

Would love to see Bobby Perino on the list

I don't know Manny. I am pretty disappointed that Al has not been more forthcoming. If you cannot believe Al, who can you believe.

How can Golden turn down Penn St. when he was never even offered the job ? He and his agent are doing a number on Donna, Blake and Miami as a whole.

Penn St. Doesn't want this guy. To Paternoesque.

Im starting to think Davis is this best option. Butch Davis wouldn't jump to another program, nor the NFL. He's in his 60's and would want to finish his career here. He is clamoring for the job. With multiple contacts to SFla media, saying he wants the job -- which reads, he would LOVE the job.

For people who think his age is an actual issue or perceived one with the school, look no further than Jim Larranaga. Can still coach and inspire in his 60's and is going absolutely no where until he finished it out.

As for the bridges he burned? That was 20 years ago. Who is still in a position of power now that was back then. And I remember I used to hate his game day coaching, even thought he was holding his own Super All-Star team back, but at some point they got so good he couldn't even mess it up. Also, he showed a lot at UNC while he was there.

The only Snag is Donna. Even though it looks like he had nothing to do with the UNC mess, he has a little blood on his shirt. The Little One might not like that.

But she would be silly to turn him away. He's the football Larranaga. He is dying to come here, he is good, and he would stay.

If Susan says Butch wants back in... Well... Who would be a better evaluator of talent AND get more out of them???? ...No Brainer! He wants the job according to SMD.

What is funny, the fact that Howard S, Dennis Erickson and Butch Davis have all said they wish they never left Miami. Everyone talks about Miami being a spring board but those three coaches realized that the ability to win at Miami is so much better than the money that you get somewhere else. Al needs to listen to Butch.

Cristobal is not the answer. If Davis hadn't burned UM in the past and did not carry some NCAA baggage, he'd be a great choice. I guarantee that he would gather a group of very good assistant coaches quickly. He'd also save most of the recruiting class. This probably will not happen. The fired pro coaches may not be an option because of the severance pay they just received. That would leave UM in a very difficult spot trying to find a quality choice in a short time. The future of this Porgram is very tenuous right now.

"We don't know anything yet," President Donna Shalala told the Miami Herald in an email."

Well Donna, then GET HIM ON THE PHONE and DON'T ASK, TELL HIM we want to know if you're COMMITTED to THIS U right now at this very moment !

"We don't know anything yet," said the President.

Miami's Adminstration is like a bunch of monkeys fu@king footballs.

Golden is refusing to unload his best friend D'onfrio- who is a third rate position coach at best, not a defensive coordinator at any level. As a result, i believe golden will take the psu job if offered and thankfully will take the moron d'onfrio with him.

many, much respect, but please, put the pipe down and walk away from it and nobody gets hurt. Al Golden has that same drive, and see where its gotten us.
give me Butch or give me death.

This entire saga has been a bit disappointing. Still AG has yet to remove his name from consideration and reinforce his commitment to []_[] Miami. For someone who claims to have followed the history of the []_[] and be responsible for upholding the legacy he is wetting the bed on this issue.

If there is a deal on the table, I would urge him to take it and go to Penn St. He's doing himself no favors here by making himself available for other job.

We don't care if you leave round here; we're used to that. Just be decisive and do it quickly.

the best thing that could happen to the U is for Al Golden and his boo Donofrio leave. plz go to PSU

"In the end, if Al stays at Miami, it's going to be hard for some to believe just how committed he really is to this to this program."

Huh?!?! You mean if Al turned down a higher paying job to go back to his alma mater and play in a sold out stadium every day to stay at a place with with a bunch of bandwagon fans filling up a quarter of the stadium his commitment to the program would STILL be in question?!?! That's a complete joke.

Oh wow. Manny taking the gloves off! Just WOW.

Oh boy, when Golden isn't offered the job...LOLOL! The softball treatment might be over!

Too good!

AG better hope he gets that offer.

I would hate for AG to go, but who wouldn't turn down more money. AG did a phenomenal job for us. My hat goes out to him. But if him leaving means that D'Fraud is gone, then bye. See you later!!! I love my friends as well, but if he is bringing me down then he has to go. I want to be happy. He was never the problem. It was some player out of position or didn't cover down. Really, that soft coverage stuff couldn't stop a pop-warner team that ran the wishbone.

Im starting to think Davis is this best option. Butch Davis wouldn't jump to another program, nor the NFL. He's in his 60's and would want to finish his career here. He is clamoring for the job. With multiple contacts to SFla media, saying he wants the job -- which reads, he would LOVE the job.

bring Butch Davis back so he can create his masterpiece. no one knows what to do with S. Florida talent like him. he has proven that.

THAT"S IT !!! It's an AL Golden ploy, along with his agent, to ensure his boy Coach No-D not only keeps his DC job, but gets a raise and extension on top of it. He did it 2-years ago after a Season Finale LOSS and is doing it again.

Folks, Penn St. IS NOT offering their Football Head Coaching job to Golden. Why all the worry ? Oh yeah, the Honeymoon is over for this Coach with this GLARING stat on his Resume.

Golden is now 0-9 vs teams in ranked in the Final AP Poll. The average score in those 9 games is 40-20.

2011 - Lost to KSU
2011 - Lost to FSU
2011 - Lost to Virginia Tech
2012 - Lost to FSU
2012 - Lost to KSU

2013 - Lost to FSU

now tell me, that I and the above stats are lying.

good point! but u see, we are the U. and u shouldn't even mess with us in anyway. yes he would have to turn down more money, his alma mater. but we canes believe that our school is more than just the money u get as a coach. we also feel that when u coach here, u should give your blood in pledge of allegiance.

Finally, someone questions Golden! Good for you Manny!

I understand Golden trying to get more money for his family, there's no issue with that. Just don't preach that loyalty and stand with U crap anymore. Golden lost all of that ra-ra, morals crediability this weekend. He also lost most of his fan support.

So if he stays, new QB, freshman on d, bad offensive line, and a fanbase that wants you out. Good luck recruiting and filling the stadium.

Al Golden committed suicide this weekend.

I for one would love to see Butch Davis at the helm.

Canesjunkie calls it right.

AG is committed to excellence whether here at Miami or at Penn State.

Can't wait to hear AG's mea culpa speech about how he had to do the courtesy call, that he is more committed than ever to the U...

This will be CLASSIC!

canespace is murdering AG right now. they want blood.

Canespace is a Hack!

anybody who knows football realizes by know that Al and his f... buddy D'Onofrio is a fraud

Drinking game for AG's next press conference:

Pre-write AG's mea Culpa speech to see how many talking points he can recycle.

Bonus points for:

...At the end of the day...
...just part of the process....

Posted by: NigerianCane | January 05, 2014 at 01:09 PM

Yes I love my U like everyone. But we would seriously question his commitment?!? After the NCAA shyt that he went through then turning down a PSU offer to stay here I would have to think his commitment to the program would be unquestioned. But all signs are pointing that he's leaving. I wish him the best of luck.

Davis hc and shiano d coordinator with chud oc thats never gonna happen but we all have dreams. Coley is a good recruiter but the offense seems to disappear when the competition is raised.

If he's not leaving then he better have one HELLUVA speech to the fanbase, the current players and the new recruits to explain all this. I mean it's not like PSU is offering that much more $$$, you're getting over 2 mil now, and being sub par, how much $$$ do you need? He's just thinking about his family, well again, how much F'ing $$$ do you need? You'll get to a championship much faster here than at PSU. It's sounding a but F'ing greedy to me. Start winning games you're SUPPOSED to win, and at LEAST a conference, and we'll talk.

typo: a bit F'ing greedy, sorry all.

everyone is in a panic about golden leaving, i say good riddance..what exactly has he done since coming here??..keeping a dc who has statistically produced some of the worst defenses in college football the last 3 years..and wont "cut" him cause he's his best bud,please..losing 4 of his last 6 games including getting humiliated and destroyed in the bowl game..team looking completely confused every game..thats coaching..yes i say bring butch davis in.he's 62 knows he screwed up leaving last time and isn't going anywhere..and will bring in a coaching staff that will develop these kids..and we all know this guy knows talent..

Ah So, the GULLIBLE Cane bastion of foolery and what not.

Oh, I'm NOT picking on you only, Darrell. Because the VAST MAJORITY of canespace/EOTH and M-H Cane blogger's are GULLIBLE and what not. Especially when it comes too Thee Carpetbagger's. hUh
**********

Carpetbagger's

" In United States history, carpetbagger was a pejorative term Southerners gave to Northerners (also referred to as Yankees) who moved to the South during the Reconstruction era, between 1865 and 1877. "

" The term referred to the observation that these newcomers ( Goldie nd' Marky Mark ) tended to carry "carpet bags," a common form of luggage at the time (sturdy and made from used carpet). It was used as a derogatory term, suggesting opportunism and exploitation by the outsiders ( EMPHASIS on opportunism and exploitation! ). " Wikipedia.org

Golden is playing the 17-18 year old commit hat game with just one hat on the table that has a U on it.

Manny, superb analysis of the situation. Nothing more needs to be said until we hear from AG.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

An ASTUTE Cane opinion of the eternal moment! Nothing more, nothing less.

Both Thee Carpetbagger's are both NOT major college football coaching material. No if's, but's or maybe's.

Heck, because any Cane bUbba with an OPEN-MIND could peruse the entire major college football landscape and witness better head coaches working their craft and what not. Not only during the regular season, but the bowl season too.

Even Wildcat head coach Rodriquez prepared his squad for mighty Oregon and MOLESTED the quacky Ducks on national television, for instance.

And dig this y'all Goldie nd' Marky sycophants and apologists. Arizona's roster is FULL of all those THREE-STAR former prep player's. Yeah, yeah the Wildcats have a handful of 5-Star players. So what.

Alverage Grifter...
He's praying they don't take Franklin or Munchak.

We're praying too.

Let us all support Big Al in his time of need.

Posted by: beedharphong | January 05, 2014 at 01:42 PM
@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

beedharphong, Franklin is being SERIOUSLY pursued by at least 3 N.F.L. franchises. And FWIW... I believe Franklin will eventually take a N.F.L. head coaching position.

Therefore, by simple deduction that leaves only Goldie and Munchak.

al golden is not leaving.....everyone is running around like a Chinese fire drill....

mario is a loyal cane but a loser as as HC.....data says it all (he was awful at FIU)....UM needs proven winners, not loyal alumni because that never gets you anywhere...

commitment = present

strong bolted and he was committed also....

The fact that this is a conversation sort of tells me the "Goldy's days are numbered. The DC must go and unless 'Goldy makes some changes, then he should be out the door next year.

But I'm not exactly sure what'll take to get 'Goldy gone. He knows he does NOT have the support of UM faithful.

@At everyone on the blog and SMD..Name a Defensive coordinator who retained his job after being 40th, 100th,89th in the Nation on defense. Most of you are defending this clown.I see why the NFL took the fans out of voting for the pro bowl.Sheesh!

This strikes me as the what is wrong with the internet. He just talked to PSU yesterday. PSU is interviewing two other candidates today. Yet everyone wants instant gratification. Grow up. This is a big time job with lots of money at stake. I think everyone involved has acted in a responsible manner except the so called fans and the internet gurus like that click bait guy at Canesport. He needs you to get worked up so he can make his mortgage payment. Everyone will probably know within a day or two what the decision is.

However, let's say for the sake of argument, PSU offered him the job at O'Brien's salary.

How many of "Al burned us people" would turn down a $1 million dollar pay raise?

I bet not a single one of you. It's all fine and dandy for someone else to be the stand up guy right? But I bet everyone here (myself included) would probably jump at $1 million dollar raise at a job that without a doubt is more prestigious. And....if any of you think UM is a more prestigious job than PSU you are smoking something I want to get ahold of.

And I old enough to remember how many people absolutely HATED Butch Davis when he walked away for greener pastures. Now everyone loves him.

Butch was 1-5 vs FSU, 1-5 vs VT and it took him 6 years to get to that 11-1 season. He did no better than Al Golden did in his third season.

I think Davis is a great coach past his prime. If he was a hot commodity he wouldn't be unemployed right now. That's the way this business works.

If Golden takes the job so be it. If someone offered me a $1 million dollar raise, I'd take it too.

For what it's worth, my guess PSU really wants James Franklin. Golden is Plan B. Not knocking him. I think he has done a great job and I actually hope he stays because he's the best chance UM has right now to be football relevant again in two years.

If he does leave I would be shocked if Shalala interviews Davis. We aren't Big State U, but we can do better than that. I also think Mario would be a real roll of the dice. That said, having been on Alabama's staff probably added some seasoning.

If Golden is not offered PSU job, Shalala should force Golden to replace D'Onofrio or else resign himself. I'm tired of coaches using UM as a stepping stone for other jobs (either in the NFL or elsewhere).

Wow, that was really surprising news about canespace considering they are usually sunshine and rainbows. That site sucks arse!

Only idiots believe the dribble coming from Canespace, Calvin and his goofy brother Joe Gallo. The truth is somewhere in the middle of those extremes.

I don't blame All for listening to Penn St. Does he get the job? I don't know. We'll see. I won't be waking up early to find out either. What I will say is that if he does take the job be ready for Mario Cristobol as HC because Yoda A halal a lala papal does not have the guts to go after a Butch Davis who would definitely put a winner on the field.

Al Golden is who we(observant fans of the Miami Hurricanes' football) thought he was!

All those years ago, when the media(Manny, Susan and Barry especially), fans(Mayhem, mountaincane, etc.), administration(ponzi scheme accomplish Kirby Hocutt especially), board of trustees and entertainment tabloid(espn) was blinded by the Windsor Knot. There were those that were truth seers.

All you others, you're welcome. But these years will never be forgotten. When we quickly get back in the winning ways of old. Once Al Golden leaves.

James,

Its fine if he leaves for the money. My point is, he better leave now. Don't interview and stay and think you're getting live from the fanbase.

No love, James. And he better win the acc now. Or all types of planes will be circling that stadium.

Butch Davis is a traitor and a liar, if Al Golden goes who cares, we move on and do the best we can. The U needs someone good who will stay, I'm sick of losing coaches and having a program with no stability .
We need a coach who can recruit, coach and build are crappy fan base.

But I'm not exactly sure what'll take to get 'Goldy gone. He knows he does NOT have the support of UM faithful.

$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Au contraire LOYAL Hurricane partisan.

Because the VAST MAJORITY of canespace bUbba's support Goldie nd' Marky Mark. Matter of fact, approximately SIXTY-FIVE ( 65% ) of the fool's at that CS have Goldie's " backside, " and what not.

Also, a vast majority of BIG MONEY Hurricane BOOSTER'S support Thee Carpetbagger's.

Then naturally, the university A.D. and President and Board of Trustee's fall in the Goldie nd' Marky Mark camp. hUh

The bottom line is the VAST MAJORITY of Cane fan-dom are quite satisfied with 7-5 or 8-4 and 9-3 winning seasons. Be it lately or in the near term future. Go figures'.
