An early look at the Hurricanes 2014 football schedule with predictions

Are you ready for some Monday night football?

If not, get ready.

The Hurricanes are going to open the 2014 football season on the road at Louisville -- the team that just pounded them in the Russell Athletic Bowl -- on Labor Day night (Sept. 1) at 8 p.m. The game will be carried by ESPN. The Hurricanes will obviously be facing a brand new Cardinals team with a new starting quarterback and head coach. So it's tough to handicap the game now eight-plus months away.

UM's complete schedule -- which features 10 bowl teams and FAMU and Virginia -- was released at 3 p.m. Wednesday.

Here is the rest of it with some quick analysis:

- vs. FAMU, Saturday, Sept. 6: Not a lot of time to recover from a road trip. Good thing is the Rattlers are coming off a 3-9 season and still in rebuilding mode. Canes should cruise in this one.

- vs. Arkansas State, Saturday, Sept. 13: The Red Wolves are coming off an 8-5 season in the Sun Belt and a win over Ball State in the GoDaddy.com bowl. Miami should be better than this team and coming off what should be a blowout win over FAMU will help.

- at Nebraska, Saturday, Sept. 20: Bo Pelini's team finished 9-4 thanks to a win over Georgia in the Gator Bowl. The Hurricanes haven't faced the Cornhuskers since beating them in the Rose Bowl in 2001 to win their last national title. Although the all-time series is tied 5-5, Nebraska is 3-0 versus UM all-time in Lincoln. Kansas State made most of us want to forget what happened the last time UM traveled to the Midwest to play a game. Here's to hoping the next trip is different.

- vs. Duke, Saturday, Sept. 27: The Blue Devils capped their best season in recent memory by finishing 10-4 and winning the Coastal Division. They thumped Miami up in Durham and finished ranked 23rd in the country after losing a shootout to Johnny Manziel and Texas A&M 52-48 in the Chick-Fil-A Bowl. If Miami doesn't win this game at home expect Al Golden's seat to begin to feel a little warm.

- at Georgia Tech, Saturday, Oct. 4: The Hurricanes have won five straight over Georgia Tech since Paul Johnson's team ran for 472 yards in a 41-23 win back on a cold November night in 2008. The Yellow Jackets finished 7-6 last season and lost to Mississippi 25-17 in the Music City Bowl. This one makes me nervous considering the Hurricanes had to pull out a 42-36 overtime win the last time they played in Atlanta.

- vs. Cincinnati, Saturday, Oct. 11: The Hurricanes haven't faced the Bearcats since cruising to a 38-12 win in Cincy back in 1998. Former Hurricanes assistant Tommy Tuberville (1986-93) enters his second year in Cicny coming off a 9-4 season and a loss to North Carolina in the Belk Bowl. The only time Cincinnati has beaten Miami? Way back in 1947. Cincinnati has 15 Floridians on its current roster including seven from Dade and Broward. Miami should also still be good enough to beat them.

- at Virginia Tech, Thursday, Oct. 23: The Hurricanes will have 12 days to prepare for the Hokies in what should be a huge Thursday night game in Blacksburg. Frank Beamer's team fell to 8-5 after its blowout loss to UCLA in the Sun Bowl. UM has only won two of the last eight meetings against the Hokies and have only won twice in Blacksburg in eight tries since 1995. Tough one.

- vs. North Carolina, Saturday, Nov. 1: Larry Fedora's team finished the 2013 season 7-6 after a blowout win over Cincinnati and Miami was forunate to come out with a 27-23 win in Chapel Hill last year. Believe it or not, UM has lost two of its last three at home to the Tar Heels. Another tough one.

- vs. Florida State, Saturday, Nov. 15: Miami will have two weeks to prepare for Jameis Winston and the defending national champions. It might not mean much if last year's Heisman winner is rolling. Florida State will be coming off a home game against Virginia the week before and have Boston College the following week after Miami. Those aren't exactly distractions. Toughest game of the year for Miami. FSU has won four straight in the series and seven of the last nine meetings.

- at Virginia, Saturday, Nov. 22: Finally a cupcake. At least we think. Virginia has never been an easy out for Miami. The Hurricanes are only 6-5 against the Cavaliers all time. UM has dropped two straight in Charlottesville.

- vs. Pittsburgh, Saturday, Nov. 29: Miami could be fighting for a spot in the ACC championship game -- or for a bowl berth if things don't go well -- heading into this week. The Hurricanes are 32-9-1 all-time against Pittsburgh, their former Big East rivals, thanks to a 41-31 win on the road last year. UM has won eight straight and is 16-1 against the Panthers dating back to 1984. No reason at least now Miami shouldn't win this game. Pittsburgh finished 7-6 last year and is coming off a win over Bowling Green in the Little Ceasar's Bowl.

> MY WAY TOO EARLY PREDICTION: Miami, with a new quarterback and a lot of young pieces on the defensive line, goes 8-4 with losses at Louisville, Nebraska, Virginia Tech and at home to Florida State.

Reality is even if we wanted to fire Golden we can't for several years. He is signed through 2019, and UM does not have the money to pay two football coaches. So we are stuck with him for several years of average seasons. He has done nothing to improve the defense in two seasons of terrible play. Only an idiot would believe that he is going to solve the problem now by making no changes to this defensive coaching staff.

Hard to recruit talent when you are under investigation for 3 years give the staff a chance , truth be told we over achieved last year, yeah we got embarrassed a couple games but there were hollering that jimbo neede to go until this year. I think golden will take us back to the top but us fans have to be patient, look at the Butch years in the mid to late 90's when we were down but came back. Hell at least we didn't lose to GA Southern.

One of most overrated events tomorrow: Release of Miami's ACC football schedule. You already know teams and few of you go to games anyway.

u are u ... 30k u

Dumb @as people in here. Auburn beat bama on a lucky play, but they won. Ryan Williams started at Memphis as a freshman he has played many games with a much worst team start to finish with decent numbers. Some of u are just flat out stupid.

He's 6'3" 220lbs and runs sub 4.57

He also benches 315 with a 34" vertical

He's what you call an athlete. Watch his tape and you can see he runs with determination to the hole and plays the game with aggression. He can play LB or RB. He may even be an H-back TE. I like this guy in the Jason Geathers mold. Do it all chain mover. Get you a 3rd and 2 better than the smallish RBs we have. You all talk about developing talent then scoff at 2-star athletes with great physical ability. Let's see what it does. Watch his tape and comment on that before you talk about his star ranking.

Williams is going to be a lot better than what some people are giving the kid credit for. He may not have the rocket arm that Morris had but he will have better vision at 6ft 6 as compared to Morris listed 6ft 2, plus he will distribute the ball quicker to his playmakers than Morris did who at times held the ball too long. Throw in a healthy Duke, who will get help from a big back in Edwards, Crawford and possibly Yearby, a three headed monster at TE and then Coley, Dorsett, Lewis, Waters, and all these young guys and we have a potentially scary good offense. The only wild cards I see is how well the O line gels together and then of course Coley as OC. The defense although improved this year will be much better next year. So I am going to say we beat Va Tech, Lousiville, and probably lose to FSU based on talent and the Nebraska game is going to be a toss up. I see us finishing anywhere from 8 and 4 to 10 and 2.

Sorry guys for being away for so long. Calvin and I were walking together on the beach. I bent over to pick up a shell and he surprised me from behind with a Polar Vortex!

I'm a little sore but I can take your questions.

Chris H, did you fail counting? I'm sure you never got to arithmetic. We have exactly zero commits under 3.

7-5 because we will lose to NC and if manny thinks uva is a cupcake is because he don't know much about them but they will be a good team and golden boy better be careful.

Manny, is a stooge for the Football program, but I think I agree with him. I do not see us being any better than 8-4 and if we aren't careful 7-5. I love his hot seat comment like a 6-6 schedule would get him fired. People we can't afford to fire him. He has a contract through 2019 or 20.

Unc will be a tough game. Fedora is a better coach than golden. I see us losing that game.7-5

I agree that the UNC game will probably be a tough one but we will be at home so I can't see us losing that one. Williams seems to be a better fit for Fedora's spread offense. Fedora being a better coach is ridiculous especially at this stage considering he followed a team full of Davis's recruits and he already knew going in what he was basically facing where as Golden had a three year cloud hanging over his head and the programs. If we were playing at UNC I would be more inclined to see it. It's going to be an interesting and fun year to watch.

Any fool can criticize, condemn and complain - and most fools do.

This blog in a nutshell. We're going 0-12, will lose all big recruits and the university will shut down the program.

Williams is accurate and he throws the ball on time. Dorset didn't have a great arm either but his timing was excellent.

My money is on Kaaya, there's something about him. I don't know if it's the footwork or the arm, but he's special.

I don't know if he survives 6-6. It's also expensive to keep him because that stadium will be empty.

what the hell are we supposed to do, rejoice that we play every team like they are the 2007 Patriots? Are you expecting 12-0?

Cane Basketball sUcks !!!

At best Miami will be 6-6, they will lose to Duke again, its time to fire the whole defensive staff, we might not beat Ark State. If Golden is smart he needs both QBS ready to play, with this schedule one will go down for sure. He needs to have running backs besides Duke ready, Crawford is to light and carrys ball wrong, play the new guys, its at a point we need to win, Crawford fumbles. I would bring in a strong defense coach to eventually replace Golden as he fails. Mark needs to be gone ASAP, THE BOARD WILL HAVE TO FORCE THIS MOVE GOLDEN WONT DO IT.

I really love this board as we don't get a lot of Canes coverage up hear in central Florida. It's really eye opening to hear a 2 star kid is stalling on coming cause he wants to visit Louisiana Lafayette first. Goldy should be insulted and drop this kid from the list. I'm just curious in a couple if years when Randy's kids have cycled thru and it's all Golden children here what the excuses are gonna be? Are we still not gonna have the death or experience? But it really don't matter how many stars they have if they are constantly out of place on defense. It's almost like they are being told you should be standing here and whatever happens, happens just make sure you're standing there. And I know randy didn't set the world on fire but why is Al being rewarded for doing essentially the same thing?

For any team, this assessment is fair.

If you lost to them at home, you will lose to them on the road next year.
@ VT is a likely loss.

If you beat them on the road, you will beat them at home next year.
Pitt and UNC are likely wins.

If you are paying the team to show up in your stadium, you will beat them at home, unless you are truly pathetic and lose to a Georgia Southern.
FAMU and Arkansas State are likely wins.

If a team that beat you just won a national title and is returning much of that team, You will likely lose to them, even at home.
FSU is a likely loss.

That is 4-2, and leaves 6 games that will depend on the team's improvement over last year.

Louisville will be overconfident, but without Bridgewater and Strong, will be beatable.

Nebraska will finally have the guts to face Miami in a home and home, unlike some coward schools we won't mention, but will likely not renew after we beat them down.

GT is VERY beatable, as the triple option has been solved, even by THIS defense.

UVA had a lucky streak going, but they were 4-8 and 2-10 the past two years. They are a win even on the road.

Home against Duke, a team that was ranked for the first time in FIFTY years. Honestly will have to see how much those two straight losses to end the season hurt their team, but we were close with Duke, on the road, and without Duke Johnson, before the fourth quarter meltdown by the defense and Morris. I am picking a win for the Canes though with the better QB for the Duke defense, a better running game, and the home field.

Cincinnati, under Tuberville, has a decent 9-4 record but in the AAC, and when they faced an ACC team in UNC, lost 39-17. That should be a win for the Canes as well.

That leads to 10-2. That is not being on crack, that is reviewing each game independently, and with the exception of the Louisville and Duke games, just looking at the two teams head to head.

9-3 or 10-2. I think we lose to FSU and possibly Neb on the road.

Do you fools play basketball? Any news on the reigning ACC champion cane BB team?
This is a summary of cane basketball from my brother posting on Barry Jackson's blog, enjoy:

"At 10-8 overall and 2-4 in the conference, UM faces an uphill climb to make a push for an NIT berth."

This is stating the obvious, your once in a lifetime run is over. One and done. No conference championship ever again. Struggle to even sniff an NIT berth.
Back to normal for cane basketball.
Kobe was at the game last night and was asked what he thought since he had never attended a college game before. He said it was great and reminded him of his high school days. With the high school type venue and the high school type atmosphere and the high school type play of the home team. The logical follow up would be to say wait til you attend a real college game in a real college arena with passionate fans and a two good teams going at it. But you won't find any of that in South Florida.

Go Heat!

The reason is the same as Richard Sherman being called a thug worldwide. When Bill Belichick was only mentioned in a very small amount of articles nationwide. While Sherman was questioned right after the play, and Belichick had hours to reflect on his comment.

Posted by: ACC sucks and the canes can't compete

The logical follow up is 'WE DON'T CARE'. We're talking football here dude. We all know our bball had it's glory run last year, so it's not a big deal to us. Why not go play in the street or something

fat boy is wrong
Miami will beat Louisville
Miami will beat Va Tech

The Neb game is 50-50

ACC ch game
Loses in teh ch game to FSU
Finishes 9-4
Goes to a bowl
Wins the bowl
Finishes 10-4
Duke rushes for 1200 plus yds
Yearby rushes for 450 yds

Duke turns pro

Take that to the bank
All you losers (not you Manny) s-t----fu

Go canes

Whats there to think that UM will lose to Louisville?

The problem of losing games is NOT the fault of the Cane players. Any player going to a major college program is going to be a very good player.

The Canes and their losses are totally the fault of goldie and d’o setting up the defense to lose from the first play of the game to the last.

There is NO way three down defensive linemen can stop any running play against six offensive linemen, and a blocking back and a running back for less than 5 yards ESPECIALLY when goldie and d’o have the Cane linebackers 5 yards off the line of scrimmage. The Cane defensive linemen can NOT stop any end run for less than 5 yards. Other teams must be laughing their butts off at goldie and d’o.

And then morons goldie and d’o run a zone NO pass coverage which is a gift to the other teams QB and receivers to make 15 yard plays to keep their drives alive.

I am just stating the obvious. The high scores against the Canes and the high yardage put on the Canes and the total number of minutes the Cane defense is forced to be on the field due to the stupidity of goldie and d’o are the proofs.

Even rotating Cane linemen does not give the incoming linemen the time to adjust to the offensive gaps or the blocking styles of the other teams.

D’o and goldie are too stupid to put in their four biggest and most agile linemen on defense and keep them in the entire time the Canes are on defense, move linebackers to within 3 yards of the los and threaten and bring a concealed blitz on every play. And Cane DBs have to play man to man defense and make the opposing QB make pin point passes to complete a pass.

On offense, goldie and the OC are stupid with flat passes and with hail mary passes, both waste downs for no gains instead of slant passes and button hooks for 10-15 yards and keep making first downs til the Canes are close enough to score.

And this analysis is why goldie and his staff will only ever be mediocre coaches. They are too stupid about football and too stupid in their refusal to change.

More proof of why Al Golden is rewarded for doing less with more.

The same reason Richard Sherman is demeaned worldwide for doing less than Bill Belichick did.

While Al Golden has job security from the board of trustees, the athletic director and university president without success on the football field.

Kobe never played college hoop you moron, so his hs reference was his only frame of reference.

Speaking of the Patriots, the Patriots ran a three down lineman No run defense and a zone NO pass coverage against Denver, and lost. The Pats got NO pressure on Manning. Denver ran a four down linemen defense and won and sacked Brady a few times and pressured him. It is as simple as that.

Yes, I know Belachik is a great coach with wins and with Super Bowl victories. But he was not a great coach when he lost to Denver. He looked inept and confused like goldie and d’o.

Any coach who runs a three down linemen prevent defense for even one play should be fired. Denver used it on Brady’s last TD drive and almost lost except that they immediately went back to their defense which had been winning up to the last successful Patriot drive and Denver got the ball back.

Not only are goldie and d'o stupid, but so are the Miami BofT, the prez, and the AD for putting up with mediocre crap from goldie and his staff.

Best team in SEC hoops would be middle of the pack in the ACC.

Lookin' at you, Gatr Trash.

The Idaho Vandals beatdown looms large, trailer donkeys.

Cane1872 is truly a 1 trick pony, and that is being generous. Many folks have pointed out countless times the advantage of a 3-4 against a modern offense. Obviously stuck a couple centuries back.

oh, btw, we are in a 4-3 far more often, but I know you can't count very well and it conflicts with your occ regurgitated point.

Champ (really chump or chimp),

You are in the early lead for dumbest post of the year. It is very early, but that's still saying something.

Use the interweb to try to learn a little about logic and see if you can figure out why the Talib issue has nothing to do with Golden.

Cane72 For the love of God STOP with the 3-4 nonsense. We RARELY use it dude, RARELY. Almost EVERY down we have 4 dl's on the los, and sometimes move lb's or safeties up to blitz. Why do you CONSTANTLY harp on the 3-4? Are you senile, or wanting someone to back you on it, NO ONE will because we ALL know it's seldom used. Let it go man, let it go.

Canes1872, far funnier is that you post the same nonsense every day and you think Golden is stupid.

Seriously, do you ever watch the substitutions on defense in a pro game for a college or pro game? Who leaves their d on the field without subs as you describe? Don't spend that tiny brain too much trying to figure out the answer, because it is a trick question---no one.

6-6 at best...williams is completely an unknown.....

2011 - nothing
2012 - 15/20 for 137 total yards
2013 - 22/32 for 369 total yards / 1 INT...

he is not as good as morris since if that was the case golden would have used him when morris was struggling....

how anyone predict ANY wins with a leader with those horrible stats.....

no way UM advances to ACC title game....that's pure fantasy...

Gator, Lover, killer or fan, the post is a comparison of the love for Al Golden without the equal amount of success on the football field.

You show more love for Al Golden than you do for his wins against other teams. The ratio is out of proportion to his success.

You without a doubt are aware that Al Golden has never defeated a team ranked in the top twenty at the end of the year.

So you are also knowledgeable enough to know that the family Al Golden was born into causes fans like you to follow him, only. And he will never coach to a superior level of success on the football field.

The bottom line is still the coaching staff who are preparing these players. Dorsey was not the most talent QB, but he was the best one to run the pro-style system. Williams will be expose just like Jacory and Morris, due to the lack of coaching/play calling. The system and/or scheme, to include position coaching have a lot to do with pre-game and game-day productivity. The NCAA mess DID NOT have a direct impact on coaching and game day performances. The 2013 football team never got into a groove, and often appeared to be playing uphill...rather than downhill.

We are losing home town recruits based on their observation and input from their high school coaches. For the past 2 years, BTW has produce top-level football players, and for some reason they are not directed nor encouraged to attend the U. Ice Harris is a good football coach, and he recognized the flaws in the existing coaching staff. I cannot blame a high school coach for looking out for the best interest of his players' future. Golden will get his shared of South Florida players, because of their love of the home town team...NOT the coach staff.

Agree, the NCAA has impacted the quality of recruiting over the past several years, but not coaching. I am not throwing this coaching staff under the bus...like they have the former and current players. Let's just be real..."we are what we see on film...out coached and out performed...regardless of players'stars and NCAA so-called sanctions".

The coaches and players were pleased with their accomplishments this past season. Therefore, my expectations were too high. As a cane fan, I just missed the show, fun, and passion of the U. FSU still has those characteristics, and I enjoyed the National Championship game.

Coach Golden and staff, you have my support as a cane fan. Just bring back the Show, fun, and passion.

We will not lose to Louisville the first game...bank on that....new coach....new QB. I think Ryan Williams will have a coming out party.

I forgot to explain what the Show, Fun, and Passion represents:

- Show; the team prepared hard prior to the curtain, lights, and all of American to witness the skills of a confident unit displayed on game day. Go to the bathroom, get your hot dogs, coke, and popcorn early...and sit on the edge of your seats. We don't know what is going to happen, but it's going to be entertaining...and worth the price of admission.

- Fun; the U illustrated how the game is played regardless of stage, environment, or team ranking (motto: anywhere & anytime). They played relaxed and not affraid to make mistakes

- Passion; nobody loves the game and prepares harder then the U.

Do you do basketball?
Hoops anyone?

And that was with a big crowd Duke brought in.
Why no Kobe, no Wade, no LBJ when Boston College comes to town?
All of them came to see coach K and the Dukies.
The sorry canes are an afterthought.
NIT or bust.
Bust more likely

Nope we DON'T do hoops, so gtf outta here with your nonsense.

Ahhh, the stench of Gatr Trash is in the air. You can smell it only it is more putrid this year after 4-8.

and the Cane beatdown.

Hey, blog Soldy Pig, I gots my tissue ready to re-read your one-love, solidarity, 9-11, marine, Gatr Trash and Cane love fest post from last October.

It's a real tear-jerker written by someone who is a massive coward. Get back to Costco, you piece of garbage.

21-16. Will live for a looooooong time. Until the next beatdown the Canes put on the Gatr Trash that is.

Now we know. Miami students can not count.

count the number of Cane defensive linemen with hands on the ground at the beginning of a play.

Stupid Miami coaches have only three defensive linemen with hands on the ground. The rest of the Cane players are all light weight defensive backs. and that is the reason they can not stop a run for less than five yards. And they drop back into a zone which is why Miami can not stop a pass.

Look at the facts, high scores against the Canes, Cane defense is on the field the whole day, No three and outs, No sacks of other QBs, huge yardage numbers against the Canes.

What a bunch of stupid Gumps. Stupid is as stupid does.

Chimp cane, your post had no comparison. Just some fake "proof" that had precisely zero to do with Golden.

One-trick pony, meet dead horse. Dead horse, meet broken record.

I think I will be a FSU fan next season.

All these losing Hurricane seasons since
Butch left has gotten me depressed.

Gooooo Seminoles!!! Heyyyyy, Ohhhhh.
Hurricane fans and U staff are all morons.

No one uses gator in their name, unless they are fans. You don't have anything worthwhile to post. So you bring your self hatred to this site. Constant name calling and lack of respect for yourself is not welcome here.
