An early look at the Hurricanes 2014 football schedule with predictions

Are you ready for some Monday night football?

If not, get ready.

The Hurricanes are going to open the 2014 football season on the road at Louisville -- the team that just pounded them in the Russell Athletic Bowl -- on Labor Day night (Sept. 1) at 8 p.m. The game will be carried by ESPN. The Hurricanes will obviously be facing a brand new Cardinals team with a new starting quarterback and head coach. So it's tough to handicap the game now eight-plus months away.

UM's complete schedule -- which features 10 bowl teams and FAMU and Virginia -- was released at 3 p.m. Wednesday.

Here is the rest of it with some quick analysis:

- vs. FAMU, Saturday, Sept. 6: Not a lot of time to recover from a road trip. Good thing is the Rattlers are coming off a 3-9 season and still in rebuilding mode. Canes should cruise in this one.

- vs. Arkansas State, Saturday, Sept. 13: The Red Wolves are coming off an 8-5 season in the Sun Belt and a win over Ball State in the GoDaddy.com bowl. Miami should be better than this team and coming off what should be a blowout win over FAMU will help.

- at Nebraska, Saturday, Sept. 20: Bo Pelini's team finished 9-4 thanks to a win over Georgia in the Gator Bowl. The Hurricanes haven't faced the Cornhuskers since beating them in the Rose Bowl in 2001 to win their last national title. Although the all-time series is tied 5-5, Nebraska is 3-0 versus UM all-time in Lincoln. Kansas State made most of us want to forget what happened the last time UM traveled to the Midwest to play a game. Here's to hoping the next trip is different.

- vs. Duke, Saturday, Sept. 27: The Blue Devils capped their best season in recent memory by finishing 10-4 and winning the Coastal Division. They thumped Miami up in Durham and finished ranked 23rd in the country after losing a shootout to Johnny Manziel and Texas A&M 52-48 in the Chick-Fil-A Bowl. If Miami doesn't win this game at home expect Al Golden's seat to begin to feel a little warm.

- at Georgia Tech, Saturday, Oct. 4: The Hurricanes have won five straight over Georgia Tech since Paul Johnson's team ran for 472 yards in a 41-23 win back on a cold November night in 2008. The Yellow Jackets finished 7-6 last season and lost to Mississippi 25-17 in the Music City Bowl. This one makes me nervous considering the Hurricanes had to pull out a 42-36 overtime win the last time they played in Atlanta.

- vs. Cincinnati, Saturday, Oct. 11: The Hurricanes haven't faced the Bearcats since cruising to a 38-12 win in Cincy back in 1998. Former Hurricanes assistant Tommy Tuberville (1986-93) enters his second year in Cicny coming off a 9-4 season and a loss to North Carolina in the Belk Bowl. The only time Cincinnati has beaten Miami? Way back in 1947. Cincinnati has 15 Floridians on its current roster including seven from Dade and Broward. Miami should also still be good enough to beat them.

- at Virginia Tech, Thursday, Oct. 23: The Hurricanes will have 12 days to prepare for the Hokies in what should be a huge Thursday night game in Blacksburg. Frank Beamer's team fell to 8-5 after its blowout loss to UCLA in the Sun Bowl. UM has only won two of the last eight meetings against the Hokies and have only won twice in Blacksburg in eight tries since 1995. Tough one.

- vs. North Carolina, Saturday, Nov. 1: Larry Fedora's team finished the 2013 season 7-6 after a blowout win over Cincinnati and Miami was forunate to come out with a 27-23 win in Chapel Hill last year. Believe it or not, UM has lost two of its last three at home to the Tar Heels. Another tough one.

- vs. Florida State, Saturday, Nov. 15: Miami will have two weeks to prepare for Jameis Winston and the defending national champions. It might not mean much if last year's Heisman winner is rolling. Florida State will be coming off a home game against Virginia the week before and have Boston College the following week after Miami. Those aren't exactly distractions. Toughest game of the year for Miami. FSU has won four straight in the series and seven of the last nine meetings.

- at Virginia, Saturday, Nov. 22: Finally a cupcake. At least we think. Virginia has never been an easy out for Miami. The Hurricanes are only 6-5 against the Cavaliers all time. UM has dropped two straight in Charlottesville.

- vs. Pittsburgh, Saturday, Nov. 29: Miami could be fighting for a spot in the ACC championship game -- or for a bowl berth if things don't go well -- heading into this week. The Hurricanes are 32-9-1 all-time against Pittsburgh, their former Big East rivals, thanks to a 41-31 win on the road last year. UM has won eight straight and is 16-1 against the Panthers dating back to 1984. No reason at least now Miami shouldn't win this game. Pittsburgh finished 7-6 last year and is coming off a win over Bowling Green in the Little Ceasar's Bowl.

> MY WAY TOO EARLY PREDICTION: Miami, with a new quarterback and a lot of young pieces on the defensive line, goes 8-4 with losses at Louisville, Nebraska, Virginia Tech and at home to Florida State.

Ken Dorsey played for a good coaching staff and 25 future NFL players. Put Dorsey on the U roster of the past 5 years, and he would have never been drafted. The Kaaya kid will win the starting job, because he gets rid of the ball quick. Williams will most likely get the nod, because Golden will override the OC's decision. Go to the Miami.247sports.com site and watch the film on Kaaya. Although Valentine is powerful, he looks overweight and slow off the ball. McDermott, Thomas, and Darling are the best linemen who are ready to complete from day 1. McCray, Harris, and Young will be pretty good LBs. Smith is a pass rushing specialist. Hester and Gayot will push for playing time too. Yearby needs to gain about 15-20 pounds, but will be a good special team returner his first year. With a good DC, Valentine, Thomas, Muhammad, Tyrig, Smith, and Moten would be a force. With this talent, the coaching staff should expect at least an 11 win season.

Change the schemes on offense and defense. Short patterns, power draws, screen and crossing passes. On defense, trust corners to play physical and move strong safety closer in the box (10 yards from linemen). Zone is good, but not the primary scheme.

Calvin, calm down! I must admit that I did not see this coming with the coaching staff. I remember you had questioned the hire 2 years ago. I wanted to trust change, and I thought Golden was going to put his foot down with his staff. With Penn State going in another direction, Golden will be looking for 10 and 11 win seasons, because his stock is down concerning future HC positions at a major university.

Stephen Morris said "judge me now" because he's finally healthy and he goes out there in the Senior Bowl and looks Jacoby Harris. Smh. At least Jedd Fisch and the Jaguars will be able to take him late in the draft.

I hate auto correct.. looks like Jacory Harris

Why does everyone talk about changing schemes. Golden himself says, "why change". Expect the same as last year, and the one before that. Nothing will change, except the win loss record. Very little chance of 9 wins this year, or the next few years. Other coaches, who really are coaches, don't have to work hard to figure out these schemes, and all other ACC coaches are telling Golden, your doing great, why change.

### Negativity has swirled among some UM football fans, with many upset about defensive coordinator Mark D’Onofrio and the four blowout losses this past season. Associates say Al Golden has grown weary of some of the criticism.

“What the hell do people want?” one high ranking UM Board of Trustee member said. “Does anyone realize what the NCAA thing did to us? That team this year was an ordinary team, and we went 9-4. It will take three years to build this up, but this is the right guy to do it.”

### UM still hopes the NCAA will reduce its penalty of nine docked football scholarships because UM withheld some last year. But the NCAA hasn’t given UM an answer yet.

Perspective

Thing for me is:
Golden is here. He gets two more years to produce with his guys and no sanctions.

I stand behind him, but expect nothing much.
I really hope he surprises us naysayers, cause I really do see us just as easily going 5-7 or 9-4.

There is only one gimmee on next year's schedule. Famu or Fau or whoever it is....I am not even overlooking Ark. St., UVA, Pitt, GT, certainly not UNC, VT, UL, NEB....
FSU is a Loss...

I really hope Kaaya gets to start and really shines. I hope Yearby pushes Duke and Gus learns to lower his center of gravity.

I have no hope that our defense will improve markedly.

I hope OC Coley gets to develop his game.

I even resign myself to the notion that after a pitiful, mediocre 2014, AG gets another to have this year's recruits develop and gain experience. His seat will get warm next year, but 2015 is his make or break - no excuses, nada.

He gets a danged "pass" this year.

blech.

Go Canes!

Excuse maskers

The NCAA thing means we don't beat FSU, it doesn't excuse you for VT, Duke, and Louisville.

If he didn't like the heat then he should've fired Dino.

This is only the beginning, wait to see what happens if he doesn't win the ACC.

That's the price you pay for interviewing for another job.

Long time and dedicated Canes fan, but after seeing 3 seasons of games, 3 seasons of "record setting" defensive futility, amateur offensive design, poor offensive line execution, inability to make adjustments on either side of the ball, realizing neither the OC or DC had never been a coordinator (at BCS level), finding out neither was or is highly regarded by their peers, experimental practice routines playing music and dancing, I don't hold much hope for improvement. I'll still be a loyal Cane screaming obscenities at the tv screen and praying the Administration and Boosters make one good decision regarding this football in the last 12 years by firing Al and Staff and bringing in a "real" staff headed by Greg Schiano.

sorry....ncaa (fbs) national player ranking in 2010 has williams at #81.....there was no #77 that year.

2010 - 165/290 2075 yards 10 INT's....pathetic out of 100 possible ranking

2011 - transfers to UM during off season on 5/6/2011 and sit the WHOLE YEAR ON THE BENCH
2012 - 15/20 for 137 total yards
2013 - 22/32 for 369 total yards / 1 INT...

golden felt all of 2013 that a hurt morris was better than a healthy williams...

2014 canes will be disastrous....6/6 at best

al golden has emotionally checked out......he wont be at UM long and he knows it.....the ncaa had nothing to do with his coaching and staffs responsibilities....they are all f...ck ups.....golden self imposed the extra 9 scholarships....whos fault is that? HIS......

fans could care less about his "weariness".....UM last year should have been 11-1 with that cream puff schedule.....

all UM administration is doing is postponing the inevitable.....if both golden/dnodrio had offers with more money they both would be out of here.....both their actions already have demonstrated that.....

the UM administration screwed the UM program.....they are responsible for where UM is at because of a rushed/emotional decision on their part so now it wants to "blame" the fans....

f...ck them.....

The last thing we needed to do was hire cowards as coaches, that's what those penn disgrace morons are, cowards. They don't understand the Miami culture and the fact that moron #1 has said "we need a culture change" means he's not comfortable around Miami guys and is the exact opposite of what made us Great in the past, dennis erickson won 2 titles but more importantly, he let guys be who they were and grow into who they would become, like moron goldie, he started out as an outsider but worked his way in and like all the real headcoaches that came thru here, at some point they were at odds with the administration.

The moron we have in charge now is soft and is in full agreement with the troll and her mandate of "we're recruiting a different kind of athlete to the University of Miami" smoke signal.

Me, nash and others saw from game 1 these morons didn't have it. I didn't like what i heard from him at his 1st press conference myself cause it all sounded to scripted and not real. Always remember, he said t"this is a destination job" he never said this was his "dream job" which of course is why he tried to jet out of here, a place where he has a whole lot of unfinished work to do.

He got left way more than what james franklin got left at vanderbilt, a top 20 defense, alot of nfl talent and since than it's been down hill and all he's down is try and milk that for all it's worth.

What real headcoach is going to try and get his team to celebrate a backed-in acc coastal division title, that's cowardtry and phhhaaggoott stuff, what real headcoach is going every year, keep running from True competition, that's all this coward has done, to try and ask that we not play louisville 1st is pathetic.

What headcoach in their right mind at UM has ever done that. This guy does not have what it take TO BE A MIA-MI- HURRI-CANE.

the UM administration screwed the UM program.....they are responsible for where UM is at because of a rushed/emotional decision on their part so now it wants to "blame" the fans....

They don't hear man, but the whole administration being ran by the troll has gotten soft as cotton.

“What the hell do people want?” one high ranking UM Board of Trustee member said. “Does anyone realize what the NCAA thing did to us? That team this year was an ordinary team, and we went 9-4. It will take three years to build this up, but this is the right guy to do it.”

If that moron is asking "what the hell do people want" they should fire him just for asking that dumb question, shows he doesn't have a clue, but ok, since he asked i'll make it simple for those penn disgrace cowards, i'm glad he asked that question, cause maybe he doesn't know, so here you go:

I suppose the idiot haters here will now blame Golden for Morris' performance at the Senior bowl. He did fair. But the last drive exemplified Morris career at Miami- by throwing an ill advised int and going out with an L.

Good going Stephen. You are 0-2 in your last two games. Way to prepare. Way to go out a winner.

All that hoo hah abouthis arm strength- translation= GARBAGE

A QB has to be smart. Has to know ehent o keep it when to throw it away, how to read off lbs and safeties, blitzes, etc. Our last two QBs at UM had low football IQs. Thats why UM has been mediocre.

Dorsey may have won with 25 furue NFLers. But he still made the throws and he still knew when to throw it and when not to throw it. More importantly he knew NOT to lose games. He lost two games as a bona fide starter at UM 2000, 2001, 2002. His first and his last. Arguably his worst two games in his career as a starter. The Boston College game in 2001 was also bad thatwe nearly lost but remember the Defense also didnt play great with the exception of that last play with Ed Reed.

He was a winner. And he had passion. Morris showed no passion. He stared into space during games. He thinks too highly of himself.

Calvin says that Golden was left a top 20 defense when Shannon got fired- HA ha ha hah ha ha ha

That same defense that lost to BC and USF? That same defense that had a walk on true freshman at USF drive the ball 80 yds to tie the game and then won in OT? That same defense that allowed a sophomore QB from Notre Dame shame us? Funny. Very funny.

Calvin- youre a blind a55 hater. You cannot see past your own hatred. YOU are no Miami Hurricane fan- No hurricane would ever spew that much hate on its current staff. Go --- yourself

HOOPS UPDATE HOOPS UPDATE HOOPS UPDATE

No. 2 Syracuse enjoyed almost a home-game atmosphere in Miami and extended its unbeaten record this season to 19-0 after defeating UM

Only way to fill the high school type gym known as the BUC is when a top team comes to town.
Just like in football, so what else is new right?

The sad story of cane sports: BB has a good coach but has no players, no facilities and no fan support.
Football has players but clueless, incompetent coaches, no facilities and no fan support.

What's a poor cane cluck to do?

Golden still coach.

Calvina and Galloinda still redundant morons.

The Boston College game in 2001 was also bad thatwe nearly lost but remember the Defense also didnt play great with the exception of that last play with Ed Reed.

Here's a prime example of what's meant by "the new UM fans" this guy says about the 2001 defense against boston college:

////////////////////////
Quote from another moron:
"but remember the Defense also didnt play great with the exception of that last play with Ed Reed."
/////////////////////////

In 2001 lady's and gentlemen, boston college on scored 7 points in that game, but yet we have some wanna be genius UM fan claiming the defense didn't play great, rofl, shannon was the d-co and you had many players on defense balling that game and they bailed dorsey out but somehow this clueless "cluck"(as our boy d would say) fails to acknowledge the reality of that boston college game but some how manages to give dorsey more credit than he deserved.

Without realizing that the defense boston college used as well as temple the next year were the basically the same game plans that jim tressel used to exploit dorsey. You j70 on any of those teams dorsey was on with the those same coaching staffs and it wouldn't have been fair, j70 would've been the most decorated qb to ever come thru here had that happened.

Then this same moron says about morris, "he showed no passion"

Is this guy blind, the whole team showed no passion and after year 3, this team has taken on the personality of these penn disgrace morons, do those cowards from happy valley show any emotion, how bout the air traffic controller that got moved up to the booth this year and still had the worst defense in the acc, the only question that's left is which this defense was worst, last year's or this years.

Go head and keep slurping the mac staff, in the meantime the real UM people will wait until these clowns either leave on there own or get kicked out:

http://youtu.be/qvJeATp31dw

After the whole Penn st mess, there's no mercy for Golden. He actually lobbied for that job, doesn't get it, and keeps the same coaching staff.

How are you going to have a head coach at a major program try to leave for another?

Pitchforks and torches are out!!!

Calvins "analysis" of Cane players and coaches is really simple. Black=good. White=bad. Hispanic=unknown.

Racist idiot.

Alverage should quit since he's tired, turn in your next paycheck without cashing it and walk out the door to hit the showers at James Franklin's new gig, take your boyfriend from college with you and renact Jerry's most important moments of teaching together there. He won't be missed at all and a scuttled recruiting class is going to happen next year when he's fired anyway so might as well move it up a year and get a jump on the rebuild UM is in need of thanks to his failure of leadership during his atrocious coaching stint here.

g8rseetmya55, where is Dorsey now? He made a lot of bad throws, but I agree he was a winner...surrounded by all-americans...two deep. LOL

Hey, does this Ganes fan still work in the SID? What a easily owned idiot, just like his favorite loser of a coach at Miami;

Alverage didn't even make it out of the first round Ganes fans.

No worries about him not being around to continue to suck UM down the drain with his disgraceful coaching of the football team next year Ganes fans.

I'm sure Chris Freet will throw in an extra nickle for your posts here as a bonus on the check this week in the spirit of the holidays.

It's a Ganes thing, he'll never understand (because he won't let himself).

I never said Dorsey was a bad QB, but from my observation and opionion, he was a good QB...NOT Great. I just mentioned that it is not fair to compare Dorsey, Jacory, and Morris, unless they played under the same coaching staff and offensive scheme. I would like to see Golden hire Dorsey as the QB coach. What better former player to help the OC learn how to use the TEs, Backs, and WRs as a unit.

Richmond and Calvin obviously don't appreciate a qb who can read defenses, deliver the ball to the open guy and, oh yeah, win baby. QB coach for Carolina this year and Newton gives him big props for moving him up from borderline lousy to fairly good.

GatorKillerCane, I concur with your assessment of Morris and Jacory. All I am saying, if they cannot make the plays, why keep them in the game? This is the reason the coaches are paid to make the best decision for the team...not player. Shannon and Golden failed by not sitting both down due to bad throws. If Golden kept Morris in while hurt, what does that tell Williams concerning trust and confidence in his abilities? GaterKillerCane, the U is in a mess, and it starts with the HC.

What a shocker that SMO17 was great on the long balls, but couldn't make intermediate throws and had two picks...Well, the world got to see you now...

It's weird, but it almost feels "good" to know that it really was SMO's limitations. We saw RW hit the middle of the field and use the TEs very well in his garbage time last season.

There's hope! Another crack at the QB Carousel...
I am now hoping against hope for Kaaya, knowing that it's like my hoping against hope that PSU would have chosen AG.

They all know, if dorsey wilted under pressure with that o-line he had in 2002, imagine how dorsey would've looked with mat pipho as his starting right tackle. What j70 did here should tell those who don't know football what type of talent that man had, he was successful under way wrst conditions then dorsey ever had, that's not a knock on dorsey it's just the Truth. dorsey showed what he was made of in that ohigho fake game and jim tressel knew it, like the majority of art kehoe lines, they keep the qb clean, and that's been happening since kehoe got here, sacks have gone way done, had kehoe been here when j70 was here he would've been that much better.

People judge kehoe when his o-lines have been the victims of bad play calling, but you can see the kehoe affect against whoever we play, especially against the better teams our o-line since kehoe have been back and been in attack mode. our weakness has been at center, while shane has alot of confidence and consistently makes the right checks, from a physical standpoint he gets put on skates way to often, they might as well let him hand the ball off to the back.

Calvin,

I remember Pipho. point taken.

I still believe in Kehoe, not just for nostalgia's sake.
Our OLine is still really good and can be great in the next two seasons.

It seems like Feliciano has been here since 2003 making false starts, though....LOLOL.

After the whole Penn st mess, there's no mercy for Golden. He actually lobbied for that job, doesn't get it, and keeps the same coaching staff.

They should've been out after alot of those games last year where the efensive scheme makes us consistenlty look like sissy's out there, let alone after the gaytor game, these penn disgrace morons wanted to front and try to make it seem like all the off season stuff was finally paying off when anybody in there right mind knew that the gaytors kept driving up and down the field on us all day long, jeff driskel like most qb's who play us, had his career high day.

The penn disgrace morons, while that man's talent is undeniable, well definitely helped teddy b's draft stock shoot all the way up! Just imagine where logan thomas would be if he played us his last game, his agent would've told em to skip the senior bowl!

Per Andrea Adelson at espn:

http://espn.go.com/blog/acc/post/_/id/66643/miami-vs-louisville-part-ii

I had to jump back on the HATE TRAIN - choo choo!

"Miami fans: We have the same Alverage Golden, same DC under AG's direction, an unknown QB situation. What on earth makes you think the influx of freshman recruits is going to yield any better results than what the canes have done against teams with a pulse under AG? With a tougher schedule this year, we're looking at 4-8, 5-7. We have one easy game; the rest are very real potential losses; even Ark. St.. Guaranteed losses to FSU, UL, Duke, VT, UNC, Nebraska, and throw in another that we shouldn't lose - say, GT, UVA, PItt or more...We might see some improvement as the year goes on, but be ready for a ROUGH start."

Calvin, anyone who prefers Harris to Dorsey is either a moron or a racist. You're both.

Beed, I know most here think williams will start under some seniority logic, but I don't think so. He'd have to be way out in front since only get one year out of him. I can't see him way out in front of much of anybody.

Wow beed you sure want to throw in the towel pretty quickly don't you? Guaranteed losses?? We beat UNC at their place and their ALL world TE is gone, along with Renner and other key players, we WON'T lose to Duke again, VT lost Thomas, and we beat them yr before last, and kept them out of the endzone, so they'll be hurting, UL has a whole new system to learn, and lost many KEY players, we have a better backfield and Williams will be ready to light them up and of course our kids will want to atone for the bowl game loss, FSU more than likely we'll lose that one for sure. 4-8 or 5-7? We won't be that bad dude. I'm thinking 9-3 or 10-2.

By they way on Dorsey, his strengths were he was a student of the game and knew EVERY defense he went up against, and could call the right audibles at theright time. He was the ultimate Field General.

Cola,
You make good points on all but UL. Petrino has all summer too, and he can coach any kid and team up. Proven. I think we get whupped by UL again, with or wothout RW starting.

I agree GKC, I wouldn't think RW is our best option, but I have little confidence that Olsen is the future - granted, it's on limited info and there's a lot of time...

I am going worst case in this instance. Just stirring the pot a little.

Like I have said before, I think we could go 8-4 or 9-3 with a bowl loss, 8-5 or 9-4.

MAYBE AG can pull a bowl win, but I will lean on his record against teams with a pulse and time to prep, and the numbers say nay, at this point. Unless we get some real adjustments by coaching, the recruits aren't going to save the day in 2014.

I honestly think 10-2 or better is laughable.

Cola,

oh yeah, I forget who made the point recently here that the field general is one of the key factors to our run of mediocrity since Dorsey left.

I went an looked at old Dorsey highlights on the youtoobs and man, I can't agree more. He was a true field general with an outstanding army on offense. Key being, he knew what to do with his troops in those improv moments.

Not to be one of those nostalgia Canes, but I really think he has a place as a QB or Asst coach here in the future.

Does anyone remember correctly, but I thought our defense didn't fare too well against our offense in spring and summer ball this last season.

It's all we'll have to go on, dismissing any BS talk about weight gain and process and whatnot. Reporting on our new players whuppin A in practice might the only sliver of hope.

Al Golden will be fired by November 1st, 2014.

How sad!

Who will be the next coach of the University of Miami?

Anti,
Nah, he'll be here through 2015 at least; no matter his record.

Will Muschump will be fired before Nov 1st, 2015, who will be the next prison guard at UFelon

NoD and Al Golden are lovers....

As long as these penn disgrace morons are here, not only are they from penn disgrace, but they're real role model was/is al groh, the same al groh that got exposed by not top and not the bottom, but by middle Tennessee St. So no game is a lock with these clowns!

http://youtu.be/DCwemMJ49Jo

Calvin, if anyone doubts your last post, remember FAU last season. If not for Duke J., no telling who wins that one. Their lines were better than our UTough crew.

You guys mean a school with higher academic standards and very few faithful fans coming out of a three year NCAA investigation after a decade of mediocrity finished 9-4.... and you're angry with the coaching staff?

Calvin

You can't get rid of a coach when he's 7-0 and has his team ranked in the top 10. As much as you want to Pat yourself on the back, it's completely unreasonable.

Did you turn out to be right a out Golden, yes. Congratulations, you're still a fan of this mess that used to be the miami hurricanes.

not like a dude because of scheme, where he's from, the guy who preceeded him, i ca t get behind that. Not liking him because he interviewed for another job and keeps retarded assistants, that i can support.

Bout the only thing my "G" Calvin and I disagree on is KD the great!

The dude play 2 maybe 3 bad games his whole career at um. Though he was surrounded by the best talent ever assemble on one team!!
