Canes top recruit Chad Thomas happy Golden is staying

Booker T. Washington defensive end Chad Thomas said he first began hearing rumors about Al Golden possibly heading to Penn State when he played in the Under Armour All-American game earlier this week.

"I called Coach and asked him what was going on," said Thomas, widely considered UM's top defensive recruit.

"Coach Franklin, Barrow and Golden told me to just concentrate on the things I could handle and things would work out."

Thomas admits he was a little nervous, and although he considered himself "a 100 percent commitment to Miami," a potential coaching change would throw a curveball into the future plans for the entire recruiting class.

Thomas said when he found out Sunday afternoon Golden was staying he was happy and relieved.

"I know we have special class coming in and I didn't know what would happen if Coach Golden left," Thomas said. "I'm glad he isn't going anywhere. I know the rise back to the top is going to happen and it's going to be special. I want to be a part of it."

> Thomas said he was disappointed to see U.S. Army All-American defensive tackle Travonte Valentine de-commit from the program during the time of uncertainty. But he's hoping Valentine will now rejoin the class.

Chad Thomas is this class's Duke Johnson. We really want him with us.

Golden will not lose this class. Don't be surprised if he grabs a big-time recruit not currently expected to sign with UM. He has a month left to do what he does best - sell the UM program.

Keep the MO in Miami. Thanks Al.

Now let's see if we get more on the reports about how the defensive players are unhappy with the defensive scheme. Or will Al instruct Manny and Susan to report that the players really didn't mean that (Like he did regarding Duke and Dorsette tweets)

Hope you can cover wideouts Chad.

LOL!!! "Thanks Al"...pathetic

Now after talking a interview just yesterday, he is trying and will be successful in convincing *his fans* that he "was never a candidate" LOL!

Yall boyfriend met with another woman to discuss leaving U, but the other woman refused to accept his side-piece (D'No) and wanted to meet with other E-Harmony matches before making a decision, so your entitled BF "decided" to stay. He was rejected!

Boy have yall created a monster. We deserve what we get.

Dau, I'm through with the lack of journalism from these hacks.

Nearly as mad as I am at the administration for hiring Al Golden, the failure. Or at PSU for turning the failure down, Damn!

Real Canes fans have had enough of this mediocrity. Golden needs to save face with us by at least firing D'no.

Nino good post because on to many occasions we saw our DE's in space covering WR's. Another example of the horrible scheme.

Muschamp fired 3 or 4 offensive coaches immediately after season. Al should've done same thing with his D coaches

Yeah he had a great season. I bet you he's fired at the end of next season too.

I'm sure the UF folks maybe wished they had looked at Charlie Strong a little bit harder.

First sign of loser coach- firing all the coordinators. Remember Larry Coker. Sinking ship.

If you actually watch the games, we just don't have the players yet. It will take 2 more years.

We need to add JC Jackson to this class, and accept that Valentine is gone. Valentine has recognized that he can qualify at LSU, to include play for an excellent DC. Golden need to keep the rest of this recruiting class by making subtle changes to the defensive staff. Offensively, let's go with a daul-threat QB in the next recruiting class too. Why? If you are going to keep the same defensive scheme, let's work on an explosive offensive attack that has proven to work at the college level.

Zak this says it all man!

We better not ever hear someone bashing a recruiting prospect for being a "soft verbal"!

Al Golden is now larger than the program. He can flirt with his alma in front of the admin and his faithful followers and they happily take him back!!

Pathetic!!

Chad,

You sound like a really solid guy in addition
to being a great player!

Welcome to the U! Look forward to cheering
for you and the team!

Awesome news with a capital A, big Al. Glad to see that you are staying with the U to continue rebuilding our program to where it used to be. That's what I am talking about Hurricane AL.

Chad, give Valentine a call.
That Dline with Thomas,Moten and Valentine can become something special.

We need to flip Jackson and Lane from the FourandEighters.

Great, so now we're stuck with a Head Coach and his boy toy DC D'ohno because both weren't sought after or even close to being offered by their own Alma mater.

Make no mistake, Penn St. did NOT offer and even informed Golden that he was no longer a serious candidate for the job. But don't think for a second that Al didn't get a fresh new Blue Binder with the words Nittany-Tough on the cover for that interview that never happened. Golden went after this full speed ahead and now has to crawl back like nothing ever happened. And many Golden Cane slurpers will buy it hook, line and sinker. The guy sold out, but his Alma mater wasn't buying it says it all. And I assure you all that Coach D'ohno his more job security now than ever had. Miami got played by these two Yankee carpetbaggers.

7-8-9, no ACC Championship Wins and December Bowl games the next 8 years we stay.

btw, anyone remember that we just got our teeth kicked in 2 weeks ago ?

Yippie, Golden is staying. We should be so thankful. Lucky Us.

OOOHHH CRAP !!! Honey grab the tie T-shirts out of the trash he is staying ....

"I know we have special class coming in and I didn't know what would happen if Coach Golden left," Thomas said. "I'm glad he isn't going anywhere. I know the rise back to the top is going to happen and it's going to be special. I want to be a part of it."

That's what i'm talking about. Kids who want to be here.

The rest can kick rocks.

James enjoy watching D'no coach up these next crop of top HS players. By the end of the year these coaches will have u believing this new crop also sucks. Wake up.

I really don't care if a kid decommit's. I could care less. Let em go where the want to. If Onofrio stays and screws up next year, what will the excuse be?

I can't understand how we can get the offense to play well most of the last few years but the defense consistently gets blasted. Makes no sense to me.

I refuse to believe that we don't have the talent on defense but we do on offense?

If that's the case, how do so many of these teams with "lower ranked" recruiting classes have so much success?

You can't tell me that we are on par with talent on Wake Forest and Duke. That's Bull Shiite!

At some point the coach is responsible for the development and production of their unit. Certainly, recruiting is a large part of this but we should be in a much better position that we were this year. I like Al and I think he can get it done but his friend, I believe, has not put in the schemes to take advantage of our talent. He's had his moments where you could see that he made half time adjustments, GT for example, but mostly he has laid an egg.

They need to find a DC that can light a fire in their bellies, not just blame it on the lack of talent.

Former Miami wide receiver Shawn O'Dare, who played for Golden, wrote on Twitter shortly after the announcement: "Commitment-the state or quality of being dedicated to a cause, activity, etc."

Added incoming Miami wide receiver Braxton Berrios, also on Twitter: "It's a canes thing, you guys just wouldn't understand."

Yup

I feel sorry for these kids that the used car salesman has convinced that they will be back. Not with this coaching staff the u tough program is a joke. They will never get developed and if you were valentine wouldn't you prefer an easier school with a much better football program.

Here is a way that AG can redeem himself in the eyes of all the haters.

Now that the sanctions are gone and he supposedly turned down his dream job and is dedicated to the U, flip the following recruits that grew up Cane fans and were once either committed to the U or were strongly considering it.

Sony - Coach Mike Rhump ex Cane
Lane - Supposedly related to coach Barrows
Cook - Brother BB player at the U
Rudolph - Coach ex Cane Steve Walsh
WR Dixon
DT Clark
DB Jackson

I believe that Cook is already enrolled but to my knowledge none of these guys has signed a lot.
What happened to the love and influence from the above?

i dont think Al turned down penn state, if he was going to do that he would not have gone through with the interview and he wouldnt have vanished for 3 days.

that being said he is not the first person to try and get a higher paying job, so its not that big of a deal as long as Al doesn't try to spin it that he didnt want the job, and he has never been happier at the U.

next order of business is to shake up his under performing staff (Dnofrio). a few coaches need to be fired and soon.

Travonte Valentine - Please come back. Join Chad and the other D linemen for a 2014 party in someone's backfield.

Watching Frank Gore drive the 49ers into a win. All this hate spewing here doesn't change how Canes are still doing us proud in the NFL.

Fixed!!

Ask these recruits how glad they are after the Nebraska, Cincinnati, VT, and FSU games next year. Guaranteed to be blown out on TV is always something to look forward to.

Saw chad Thomas flash the U after a sack, and Berrios burn the defender for a Td, but was sad to see speedy noil, a guy I saw and hoped the canes would go after, chose the ATM university, where Johnny manzell cashed in with the ncaas blessing.

Canemutiny,begging a 17 year old to play at the U...get a life..

I think he made himself available and was willing to wait until this evening before he withdrew his name from consideration. This little episode tarnishes his credibility.
He should have put this out Friday.

LOL! What???

2011 FSU was 9-4, including losses to Wake and Virginia. They signed Jameis Winston, and after a redshirt year, helped the team get to the title game.

Brad Kaaya, now you know what we expect from you!

Mahoney Pearson,

Now you see there is always an "other side of the story" regarding how players feel about this garbage scheme. They failed to report it because it didn't fit the PR agenda of making it appear that everything was perfect in Al's locker room.

Now that the report of Al flirting with Pedo St they feeling a certain kind of way and now leaking info about how players really feel about this scheme. Where is the interview with Tracy Howard and Highsmith now?

------------------------------------------------------

Something to keep in mind if Al Golden stays at UM instead of going to Penn State: Even though several UM defensive players have praised coordinator Mark D’Onofrio publicly, some have expressed frustration privately because they want to play a more attacking style.

What’s more, several Board of Trustees members also have complained about D’Onofrio, and the administration is well aware of that.

A key UM oral commitment, cornerback Nigel Bethel, wants to see changes in the defensive approach and announced: “I want a new scheme.” He is now considering other schools, as well as UM.

D’Onofrio and Golden like to blitz some but prefer to rush four and not give up the big play. Some players would like to play more man-to-man and less zone. Make no mistake: Golden is very much involved in the schemes this defense plays. He and D'Onofrio share similar philosophies.

One UM football staffer privately expressed a concern that D’Onofrio’s system might be too complicated. But even before Penn State started pursuing Golden, the UM administration wasn't inclined to try to force him to make staff changes.

Canes

"Multiple sources told CaneSport.com and Blue White Illustrated, working in tandem on Saturday, that Golden had an agreement in principle to become Penn State's Head Coach.

A press conference announcing the hire was set to take place on Monday.

But overnight something happened that inspired Penn State to agree to talk to former Tennessee Titans coach Mike Munchak on Sunday morning.

CaneSport had previously reported that Golden expected the deal finalized today. But when rumors of the Munchak flirtation circulated Sunday morning, sources told CaneSport that Golden informed Penn State that he wanted a contract to sign today. When it didn't happen by 4 p.m. - with pressure growing throughout South Florida - he backed out of the deal.

is this true?

Chad your commitment to the 'U' and your desire to bring the 'U' back shows your determination, and style.

No one can question your concern for your prospective school because you can see the Big Picture of making the Canes proud again.

Very perceptive young man, and congratulations for your plan to make us fans have things to cheer for our team. With dedicated players like you representing our 'U' we are on our way back.

I am very proud of your steadfastness and comments.
Go 'Canes

Oh well here we go with Gallo and his conspiracy theories again. Man you watch too much Nancy Grace. Give it up man, you're pathetic. Did you ever think that maybe just maybe Golden went and listened to what they had to say, maybe got offered then thought about it and came to the realization that all the worst was behind him here and he had a top class coming in and decided to make his own way at UM. I am sure that never crossed that can of sawdust between those Klingon ears of yours. Did it, dipshit?

If D'nofrio's scheme to too complicated then just what do those nimrods think they will see in the NFL? Yeah college is way more complicated than the NFL. By the way all of those who complain about the defense, our run defense was fine against Louisville and as far as the passing defense, its just about as good as anybody else'saround the country if you take a look at the great Bama defense, Ohio State defense and any other this bowl season.

I wonder who's gonna ask him and press him on his interest in another job?

Or will the cower to him and continue to kiss his @zz???

The administration and golden shower takers should be ashamed for ok this dude to treat the U like this!

Cannot wait to hear the question posed to Golden if he was offered the Penn St. job and if he turned it down... A Direct question that Golden will sideswipe by saying,

it doesn't make a difference, I'm here at Miami for the long haul and ready to move forward....

Follow up question ? If you're here for the long haul Coach, why even entertain the job for many days and go through the interview process...

Uhhhh, hhhmmmm, haaaaaaa, at the end of the day, it's all part of the process. We've been through hard times here with the NCAA and we're now ready to move forward...

Final question. What do you plan do do about the defensive side of the ball and did Coach D'ohno get a contract raise and extension as has been leaked and being reported ?

That's a private matter between he and the University.

But of course, there's not one reporter that will pose any of those questions except for maybe Joe Rose, and he can't for fear of losing Golden on his Monday morning "reasons" why we lost and moving on to the process of how we need to get better show.

I was really hoping Golden was different, but these egocentric coaches are all the same bUllSh!t artists. Good luck Coach Golden. We all hope that U are able to lead the Canes back to glory. Please try starting with beating a team during the season that ends up finishing the season ranked. So far your 0-9 going into Ur 4th. year. Accountability and Results is all that matters now. The Honeymoon is over.

BS.....this statement is a guilt statement if I ever heard one......

“There has been much speculation concerning my future at the University of Miami. While I am flattered that our progress at The U during an extremely difficult period of time is recognized, I am also appreciative of just what we have here at UM and I am not a candidate for another position. We are eager to welcome our student athletes back to campus next week and visit with prospective student-athletes and their families beginning January 15.”

all this for the last 3 days and this is his statement?

his buddy jedd did the same thing the day before all the incoming recruits were to come for UM weekend...REMEMBER?

Are you even serious? What about the fact that FSU's other 43 players that are 2 deep are ALL superior to our entire 2-deep roster. Hell, many of FSU's 3rd. teamer skill guys are better than our starters.

But we got Brad Kaaya and everything will be fixed and we'll compete with FSU right away.

We have average Quantity right now... FSU has Quality in Quantity.

Valentine is going to LSU. He doesn't have 2 foreign language credits that Miami requires. LSU only requires one so unless he can take that 2nd foreign language credit online or during summer school (which is silly since he has the grades and courses to graduate high school), it's no Miami for him next season.

"I can't understand how we can get the offense to play well most of the last few years but the defense consistently gets blasted. Makes no sense to me."

Posted by: There is no "D" in Onofrio | January 05, 2014 at 07:20 PM

The d has a thin margin for error and the reasons are multifactorial. Scheme, talent, technique, coaching or whatever combination you chose. but when the offense doesn't play well they are further taxed by being on the field too long thereby exposing further issues with depth. You gotta have a good running game to dominate and help your defense and good special teams.

I'm sure we'll get back to that and improve the overall caliber of our football program in the years to come, as talent and depth are being addressed on the defensive side of the ball in this recruiting class. Ass far as Coley is concerned the in-game play-calling hopefully improves as well. Al is working with D'O on the defensive side, but he would be wise to hire a Soldinger, Butch or someone to help to coach they way he tried with Mario.

"There’s a little doubt that D’Onofrio will come to Penn State with Golden. The question: Which is thicker, a near-blood brother or an overall obligation to their new employer and old alma mater? The last thing Golden needs when he comes to town is to face criticism that Penn State roots are stronger than performance. Both Golden and D’Onofrio need to be bigger than their friendship. A possible solution...

CO-COORDINATOR – D’Onofrio saves face back in Beaver Stadium, Golden gets to bring along his most trusted assistant and the defense gets the extra helps it needs after the stop-gap years of Ted Roof and John Butler. During the last head coach’s search, longtime Green Bay safeties coach Darren Perry expressed interest in the top job. Maybe this time around he’d return in a different capacity – as safeties coach and co-coordinator (or, if Golden can look at things pragmatically, sole coordinator; D’Onofrio could still be assistant head coach)."

was this the set up?

CaneSport stands by all reports on Golden / P. State romance. Deal blew up today when Golden pressed for contract to sign after Munchak leak

golden is a scum bad just like his buddy fisch.....

Posted by: Anthony | January 05, 2014 at 09:03 PM

Ant,

Does it matter if they offered him the job? Or if he was told/willing to wait while they interview other candidates? He was the first one interviewed and he's still here. If you ask me, I don't think a contract was offered, but I know nothing about what went on. Either way i'm not sure it matters at this stage. What we know for certain is Penn St. came to him first, he was willing to listen, and late last evening the AD felt he was staying. I think he'll probably remain discrete in fairness to all parties involved. If anyone should speak on that it should be Penn State and i'm not sure if details won't be leaked at some point in the future... Stay tuned.
