Miami Hurricanes coach Al Golden reportedly being courted by Penn State -- naturally

Did we really think that Al Golden could go a season without being named as a target for whatever FBS football program had an opening?

Of course not.

However, the Penn State vacancy, now that Bill O'Brien has taken the job as the Houston Texans head coach, is one that Golden will undoubtedly ponder -- even if he is intent on staying in Miami. He earned his undergraduate degree from Penn State in 1991 and played tight end there for Joe Paterno. He was a team captain as a senior.

The Harrisburg Patriot-News (pennlive.com) reported Wednesday, via a source, that Golden and Vanderbilt Coach James Franklin were both "names mentioned by a source close to the PSU program.''

The article told readers to "expect Vanderbilt's James Franklin and Miami's Al Golden to top Penn State's football's wish list as the Nittany Lions search for the permanent successor to Bill O'Brien.''

Penn State athletic director David Joyner told reporters Thursday that a six-member search committee intends to replace O'Brien as soon as possible, in "days, not weeks,'' pennlive.com reported.

Golden is 22-15 in his three seasons at UM, including an extremely disheartening 36-9 loss last week to Louisville in the Champs Sports Bowl.

Golden's current contract runs through Feb. 1, 2020.

We meet with him Monday for a post-season press conference. Should be an interesting session.

As for Franklin, his Commodores (8-4) meet Houston (8-4) in the BBVA Compass Bowl at noon Saturday in Birmingham.

Under this coaching staff and teachers of the game, chick, Howard, bush, Kirby, etc..have gone from men to boys..cream puffs..tamed pit bulls who got house trained. Our type of players belong outside running wild..chasing off the mailman and attacking anyone who comes near the house. Wtf coach!

Yes Butch would come back, the question is would UM want him and thats probably a no, due to ego and arrogance. They were trying to play him over the guaranteed money clause in his contract and he turned the Browns down several times over 3 months, but UM wouldn't budge. UM wanted to only pay him 20% of the money owed him if he was ever fired unannounced (before completion of his contract). Thats the only reason he left. He did nothing here or in UNC. He has paperwork from the NCAA, and UNC's chancellors that formally exonerate him of any involvement. Even the chancellor who wrongfully fired him at the time, is vouching for him these days.

It's gonna be chudzinski.

Ok Cal I get it now.

his current 2014 recruiting class demonstrates how much the recruits believe in Al Golden and the direction he's taking the program....Well said!

Golden would have to be nuts to even entertain the idea of taking the Penn State job. Other than the fact that he graduated from there, why would he? They are under probation for the next two years and we are done, other than those 9 scholarships. Here he has much better weather, the best recruiting base, and a much better situation to win a National Title here as opposed to Penn State. And for everybody who wants to talk about the Bowl game, yeah it hurt but if you look at things realistically, Strong never had the mess to deal with there that Golden has here, plus he already had the Florida recruiting ties, and his team is further ahead than we are because he has been there longer. Now should Golden decide to leave we have a couple of great former UM coordinators who recently hit the unemployment line in Schiano and Chudzinski. Me personally I would love should Golden leave to have Chud as the new HC and Schiano serve as DC. I don't know if we could get those two but Chud is a natural fit for UM.

Al Goldenn will finish his job at the U... He is not a quiter...Stay Al Go Canes!!!

prefect fit for the u. lol
Jim trussell as head coach.
uncle Luke as d con.
coach chez as o con.

that’s two vest and a bullet one
reply

Golden is a great CEO off the field but between the lines he is not on par with other good coaches. He fails on game day. The solution is to surround yourself with great coordinators. Guys who are superior x & o guys!

does anyone thing Al wants to go in after obrien. at miami, he can talk about how bad the cloud is and he is building with the process (defense #112 to #90 in the country). at penn state if he and his staff comes in and doesnt look as good as obrien, no one will buy the process , his staff will be exposed.

The thing about it is, he almost don't have a choice, think about it, next year, no watered down schedule, new qb, gotta break in a lot of new starters on a defense that was trash, so his best bet is to pack up and go to a school that's not in a rush to be in national championship contention because they don't have that type of recruiting base.

2011 - chickillo, jalen grimble
2012 - bush, jelani Hamilton, t Howard, Kirby, and Ty McCord
2013 - burns, carter, grace, and Mohammed

What's the excuse for these guys not blowing up?

Wish list:

1) Jim Tressel
2) Greg Schiano
3) Chud

What is Tressel doing these days?

Damn Cal, she went all the way in. The beat thumped and her lyrics shocked me a bit. She a little wild on some points, but overall on point.

The other extreme of the 2 Chainz and Chief Keef stuff prevalent today. People need to hear it to counteract that nonsense tho.

Just in curiosity, how did Chud do this year as a first time HC. I know the Browns won't pay to get players and win, but did the team show progress or just exist like UM has for a lot of years now. I have watched him a little as a cood., but who wants to watch a team like the Browns that doesn't live in Ohio.
If Golden was going to make changes in the staff, I think we would know by now, unless he's aiming for someone on a bigger bowl team. I believe this is a better job than many give it credit. Golden said so, when he was hired. Except for riding the NCAA stuff out, this program is right where it was when he started.

Calvin, next years qb is an upgrade right away..who is leaving on defense that mattered? Next years team with a real qb is already better than this years team..I want golden to leave as we'll..a good head coach gets 10 wins with next years roster..and by the way, Ryan Williams throws to the te. Unlike Morris who only threw to walford when he's in the slot..
Bring in chudzinski!

Do you people not understand that there are not that many good had coaches out there that want to change jobs? They are happy and secure where they are. And do you people that the NCAA rule changes do not allow players to do the things Canes players did back in the 80's and early 90's. And, I don't think half of you actually understand college athletics, much less college football. Give Golden the same chance you gave Shannon, it usually takes 4-5 years to get you own recruits to play your brand of football and I think Golden will produce future teams that play Hurricane football. He has progressively gotten better each year, so sit back, relax, have a couple rum and cokes and let's see what happens in 2014 and 2015. If the Canes don't get better, then I would say that the AD should start looking replacement. Go Canes

Tressel is a great coach, but come one after 2002, we Canes have to some pride boundaries and principles. He'd go hard and murder the ACC, but that vest and his roots don't fit our culture.

1. Butch
2. Chud
3.Todd Bowles/Sean McDermott
4. Cristobal (learning a lot under Saban)
5. Mark Stoops
6. Winston Moss

ROFL I've been wanting to get that to you for the longest, I'm in luv, another, check out capone too, lol, that beat is tight for the one you just checked out though!

Morris is waaaaaay better than Williams, we'll see next season for sure lol!

His arm can't bail us out and the O-line will be somewhat weaker. We've only seen him hit the intermediate pass in mop-up duty, there's a big difference between then and 1st quarter/1st team FSU, VT, now Duke, UNC, and now UL defenses.

The only thing I can say about this is, smo doesn't know how to move an offense on a consistent basis so I do believe we will be more efficient on offense come next year and guys will have a better chance at getting yac yards come next year, the problem will come in where teams will start dropping their safeties down if they feel like they don't/won't have to worry about the deep ball. That's the one thing smo brought to the game, teams had to respect the deep pass, we'll see with ryan williams and coley tho, going to be real interesting, I do feel like we should start seeing real qbing again, no more boom or bust type of plays.

smo17 to many times threw passes that made no sense when it came to down and distance.

Ag would love to inherit the "mess" at PSU.
Consider:
significant pay raise.
a brand of big 10 fb that he fits best
and best of all...
he has at least three years to run the same scam as he had here.. rebuilding, working as a white knight, saving a troubled program, gritting his loyal teeth and bearing through it; all without having to actually coach; plus he has made very very significant inroads recruiting down here..He's try to pioneer the pipeline from miami to the NE, like strong.

Kind of a no brainer for him, if PSU really wants him.

he's gonna try to....

Butch Davis

No real cane fan with half a brain wants al golden to leave. What he has managed to do in his 3 yrs given the talent level he inherited the ncaa investigation for 3 yrs hanging over his head has been amazing. Losing al golden would hurt miami badly. Who would we get as coach. They had to settle for shannon the time before golden and when they hired golden he was the only coach with any cache who was willing to sniff the job. The other candidates were never gonna work here Really john gruden, did u really think he would take the job lol he is a pro coach who isn't gonna ever take a college job. Get your heads out of your ass and be glad al golden is the man running this program if u want to ever see another miami national title.

I hope golden is taking notes on stoops about how to prepare for a game

Nobody is going to follow this moron from Miami to psu to play in his non-productive schemes. Once he gets to penn disgrace, he'll take his b.s. black jerseys with em, he'll rename it U-lion(cause we sure do), the 300 page binder, raising cub videos with fly off the handle. It'll be a perfect environment to take this corporate crap up there with.

He needs to be taking notes of what good real estate he can use up in no wonder they called it "happy valley" sick disgraceful operation they were running up there.

Unfortunately I think we're stuck with Golden and his better half cuz I don't think we're that lucky. Golden must be a curse by paterno

Funny how the AG defenders here all rely on weak generalizations about the progress he has made here; completely glossing over the stats and big game flops, and are most worried about his replacement.

To the AG defenders - we are going to suck for at least the next two years, regardless of ho's in charge.

Don't be victims of the sunk cost fallacy....That's what I see from most supporters here.

It's not okay to double down on a bad bet.

It's that time of the year. How many players will be former players? How many players will be in the dog house. What happen with Olsen, Scott and Ray Lewis Jr not making the trip to Orlando. How long does it take to evaluate this coach and staff. Stevie Wonder couldn't believe what he saw doing the Louisville game. Still no changes in this staff.

Good post beed.

that Alabummer vs. OK game...that's being coached up; way to freaking go OKU! Roll, Tears, Rollllllll! so great.

Thanks.

QB Trevor Price balled the hell out! AJ's girl is leaving with him lol!

That sack and score sent me into orbit. I want my own team back!

^^^^^^^

Oh that hurt!!!

Lol

Zook, Mahoney, mainecane, and such gonna be mad at that one!!

Lol

Just not seeing it with Golden. The team gets outcoached all the time. It wasn't just Lousiville, when you consider FSU, Wake, North Carolina, VT and Duke outcoached and outplayed them. Morris didn't lift his game at all and even regressed. He had a nice career, but he did nothing exceptional when it really mattered. The defense is horrid and doesn't challenge or compete against good teams. The OL has gotten worse. If Golden sticks with D'Onofrio and Kehoe it means he accepts mediocrity. It seems Manny likes him because Golden talks to the beat writers more and uses a lot of "Consultant Speak" to discuss the team. It's a lot of smoke and mirrors, though. Recruiting seems to be better but it is hard to really tell as the rankings are always a crap-shoot. The team did win 9 games, so not bad.

James Franklin has done a much better job in his three years at Vandy than Golden at UM. Think about that. While the records are similar, Vandy is in a tougher conference, has a smaller recruiting base and tougher academic standards. However, which team is better coached, tougher and plays more consistently?

I don't see Golden going to PSU, but he needs to take a hard look in the mirror and ask himself if he can make the decisions needed to be successful. If so, then he will make some changes on his staff. Otherwise, he is blind to what the team is lacking.

Attention, every cane fans!

If Al goes to Penn, both UM and Penn are happy.

If not, both get trouble soon.

Answer, he knows well this, he will take Penn Job and leave.

UM admin already knows it!

Next Coach

1) Jay Gruden..OC at Bengals
2) Sciano

Given the positives about Golden, his DC is not one of them. Neither is his style of coaching. It is a better fit for Big Ten football.

I don't believe UM coaches are connecting with their players or managing them well. Too rigid and soulless.

Meanwhile, a redshirt freshmen just beat Alabama. You didn't hear the coaches whining about youth, etc.

This kid, Henry, for Bama will be a Heisman contender. He is a freshman. He is fast and powerful and has good hands

It was a treat to see two teams fight like heck through the entire game. And watching #19 for Oklahoma pass rush like a maniac was great. You didn't hear Stoops talking about the player being too small. Loved the OU blitzes and man coverage as well.

What a great game. Looked like Canes teams of old in terms of aggression, determination, speed and QB play.

On Golden, good man, but he is not the right fit for UM unless he dumps the DC and changes his style of coaching to one that suits UM football. Unlikely on both counts.

My guess. ..UM knows it..maybe not.

These games continue to be Golden exposure.

I agree these teams and coaches have stolen our whole style

...can't blame them since we don't want it.

Hopefully we aren't stuck with this excuse making clown. Please get golden psu.

What has Golden accomplished? He really has nothing to show. Being ranked 7th was great but then we lost to vt.

On a side note...the wolf of wall street, see it, its awesome.

Listen cane nation we will be okay without the car salesman Goldie. Thank you PSU.... please take him and the D fonie ASAP....... I said this three year ago the guy is joke. I have not been to a cane game since Goldie boy got hired by idiot Holcut whatever the snake name is.

6 days and counting and no coaching changes yet.

Time to Move On from Al Golden,

WTF are you talking about? No, it wont take two classes to change everything around. It will take 4 maybe 5 classes. Next year will be the first year that Golden will coach a roster entirely filled with just his recruits. And this 2014 class should finish in the top 5 in the country which is pretty damn good. However, the 2015 class will be even better because, unlike the 2014 class, 2015 will be the first class that Golden and his staff will be able to recruit entirely without the NCAA investigation on top of them. Butch Davis left after his 6th year and lead Miami to 11 wins (previous two seasons winning 9 games) and literally left Cooker with 2 National Championship teams in 2001 and 2002 (OSU call was mad BS). Do u think that took one or two classes to accomplish. Hell NO! He to, had to rebuild the program dealing with NCAA sanctions and it took at least 5 years to become a national power. How long did it take Howard Schnellenberger to build UM and win a national title.....5 years. And he to left the program in great hands to coach Johnson to continue. My point is, coaches need at least 5 years to have a roster completely comprised of their own recruiting efforts to fit what they are trying to do. Al Golden is showing that he can recruit in South Florida and now unhand-cuffed from the NCAA and is two more classes away (2014 n 2015) from bringing the Miami Hurricanes to the top of college football and contending for ACC championships as well as National Championships.

Oh and for your 3 star recruits, what the hell do you think Al Golden has been putting on the field the last two years? This whole senior class which he did not recruit, and which he dismissed half of them, was mainly 3 stars. He has definitely developed players and he will be also doing so with the plethora and consistency of 4 star recruits starting in the 2014 class.

Time to move on from you buddy. You get a BIG, C'MON SON!

Whether he stays or goes its really embarrassing how the university as a whole has let the football program down. Winning 5 titles the school should have done everything in its power to renovate the OB. Instead they decide that playing 25-30 miles from campus is a good idea. Now its being used as a negative recruiting tactic against us. How the university builds a b-ball arena before it builds or could have saved the "ol girl" is beyond me.

Curse of the OB continues

Bush and Howard are creamcakes in D-1 whereas inhigh school they were great bc in D-1 everyone is good. Difference between D-1 and high school are:

1) Media Hype.
2) Depth.
3) Size and speed
4) speed of the game
5) coaching tactics

in high school Howard and Bush played possibly 2 hard games all year then the playoffs. In D-1 with 1-2 games excepted, youhave to be "ON" all season long.

That was a stupid post earlier amongst many.

Oklahoma takes down Bama just as I predicted. The vaunted SEC darling. Spiitle Lou HOltz and idiot Mark May stated flat out before the game that Bama is the best team in the country. An example of media hype. #3 taken down by #11. Proof the upcoming 4 team playoff system is GARBAGE. GARBAGE.
A true playoff system should incorporate a minimum of 8 teams, incorporate the major bowls (Sugar Fiesta, Rose, Orange, Cotton, Peach, and two others). Limit regular season games to ten, plus a potential conference championship (11), then a nat ch winner would play a maximimum of 15 games if undefeated all the way. As it is now, FSU and Auburn would have played in 14 games. Minor bowls can still exist, and teams can be selected to bowls based on rankings or tie ins as usual.

The garbage celebration penalty against an Oklahoma guy after celebrating a TD last night shows how soft, dmaged, ultra PC, HYPOCRITICAl and liberally melted the game of football has become. The kid slashed his chest. Did he slash his throat like Teddy Bridgewater? NO. Did TB get a flag? NO. Would a Miami player have gotten a flag? Absolutely

Golden isnt going anywhere people. His legacy is being written now that his recruiting class is coming in- Braxton Berrios flashed a U last night. Plus all the Randy Shannon luggage has left the building.
