Miami Hurricanes coach Al Golden reportedly being courted by Penn State -- naturally

Did we really think that Al Golden could go a season without being named as a target for whatever FBS football program had an opening?

Of course not.

However, the Penn State vacancy, now that Bill O'Brien has taken the job as the Houston Texans head coach, is one that Golden will undoubtedly ponder -- even if he is intent on staying in Miami. He earned his undergraduate degree from Penn State in 1991 and played tight end there for Joe Paterno. He was a team captain as a senior.

The Harrisburg Patriot-News (pennlive.com) reported Wednesday, via a source, that Golden and Vanderbilt Coach James Franklin were both "names mentioned by a source close to the PSU program.''

The article told readers to "expect Vanderbilt's James Franklin and Miami's Al Golden to top Penn State's football's wish list as the Nittany Lions search for the permanent successor to Bill O'Brien.''

Penn State athletic director David Joyner told reporters Thursday that a six-member search committee intends to replace O'Brien as soon as possible, in "days, not weeks,'' pennlive.com reported.

Golden is 22-15 in his three seasons at UM, including an extremely disheartening 36-9 loss last week to Louisville in the Champs Sports Bowl.

Golden's current contract runs through Feb. 1, 2020.

We meet with him Monday for a post-season press conference. Should be an interesting session.

As for Franklin, his Commodores (8-4) meet Houston (8-4) in the BBVA Compass Bowl at noon Saturday in Birmingham.

I'm mixed on whether it's good for The U if Golden stays or goes.

Case for staying. Golden seems to be a good recruiter, although he's not gotten some big names the last couple of years (Thomas, Cook, Michel, etc.). Is that due to previous NCAA cloud, high school coaches steering kids elsewhere, etc. or is Golden missing something? Golden also is a class act, does it right, has steered us through the NCAA mess and has won more games each year.

Case for going. Golden may be a little too clean cut for us. He definitely needs to part ways with his buddy D'Onofrio. We need an attacking defense, not one that sits back and plays passive. Can Golden keep the top high school talent in S Florida at Miami. It's very concerning to me when you hear about kids that grew up Canes fans not come to the U (Dalvin Cook, Amari Cooper, etc.).

If Golden leaves, we need someone to come in and keep this recruiting class and bring back the swagger of The U.

And please stop with this "Miami-guy" garbage. None of our successful coaches have been Miami guys

Acutally, Schellenburger (sp) was a Mia guy and except for JJ and Erickson, the follow up coaches came from within the program of coaches under JJ and Erickson - those are the Mia guys being referenced here.

because miami could end up losing all relevance and never make it back to glory days if he leaves.

You again, you FOOL-MINDED, dUnce!!

Doesn't this mainecane ever get tired of his FOOLISH, meandering bumbling, fumbling, mumbling ways and what not. hUh

FWIW... the Miami, Florida Hurricane's no longer have any RELEVANCE!

Because... " It's all about the U " disappeared AFTER the 2005 season. Albeit there's was a GLIMPSE and SIGHTING of Hurricane SIGNIFICANCE during the 2009 season.

stop the madness, urban meyer at ohio state came in under a NCAA cloud and under the cloud he coached his team to 12-0. i like Al but in year 3, the team should look much, much better then they do. dont even think about blaming the players. Michigan state had 2 and 3 star guys now the have one of the best defenses in the country. after 3 years, Posted by: cane man | January 03, 2014 at 03:54 PM

Finally, a Hurricane loyalist with a SENSE of REALITY!!!

By the way, that Urban took over a team which finished with a 6-7 record ( Bowl game lost. ) the previous season. Imagine that y'all Goldie nd' Marky Mark ZEALOTS. dUh

Yeah, yeah the LIAR had a roster FULL of 4/5-Star players and what not. So what!

However, the point CANE MAN is attempting to make, is that Ohio St. went UNDEFEATED!!!

Reported that PSU offered AG the job, let's hope so. More importantly, he takes it and leaves.

Call Greg now and have him in hand by Monday to keep this recruiting class and possibly get more.

Yankee, much talk about the 3-4 here. We almost never are in a 3-4.

Steelers rarely rush 3 guys. Usually 5 in obvious passing situations. The advantage of the 3-4 is you can rush 5 and disguise who they are.

Most O lines are pretty capable of blocking a straight 4 man rush these days. Officials more lenient on holding. Announcer mentioned Stanford had 2 O-line holding penalties ALL YEAR. Really?

The doubters on this blog will come to regret it when Golden leaves Coral Gables.

And I-F Thee Carpetbagger's were to leave the Hurricane program. The majority of those current recruits would honor their verbal's. Simply because one reason they committed was because of... It's all about this " U. " see THE DUKE as one stark, glaring example!!

Miami must get a good head coach as quickly as possible to save recurit class, Golden and PSU have agreed several good canidates around, Jim Leavitt James Franklin, butch Davis Rob CHubsinski the other canidate is USC ORTENGANE

!!!!!!!!!!!!

Your bellowing, mumbling, fumbling notions RING H-O-L-L-O-W!

Blah, blah, blah.

Miami can and will win. I do not see AG leaving. He has so much invested and leaving to go to another school banned for two additional years plus significant scholarship reductions would be foolish. You do not need to act like immature thugs playing to win-look at U of Ala. Nick Saban does not put up with that. It was embarrasing to say the least watching the U of Louisville and MARSHALL thugs play.
There is no doubt a change is needed on the defensive side of the ball and I think that will be addressed If he does leave there is only one real choice and that is Butch Davis. Having Shannon any where near the program would be a kiss of death. Stay the course.

Donna - now that AG has one foot out the door, wish him luck and good graces. In no way should you convince him to stay.

On the contrary try to put differences aside work things out with Butch.

If not Butch, make it happen with either Schiano, Chudzinksi, Petrino, Jay Gruden, Ed Orgeron, Jim Leavitt, Jim Haslett, or Pat Narduzzi. A package of a few above to coach the offense and defense as well would be great.

Let Blake get a consesus of whom to hire by deferring to Jimmy, Janckovich, Mike Irvin, Randall Hill, Lamar Thomas, Bennie Blades, Ken Dorsey, Clinton Portis, Phillip Buchanon, Cortez Kennedy, Warren Sapp, Jeremy Shockey, Duane Starkes, and other ex canes that are willing to render advice.

Form a UM Football Advisory Board to help in these decisions and hold present and future coaches accountable.

Donna/Blake go get'em

According to CANSPORT, Goldie will be the next head coach of Penn. St.

And Canesport has a very HIGH RATE of their reports coming to FRUITION and what not.

@@@@@@@@@@@

The N.C.A.A. has already said they will be giving DOUBLE-DIGIT scholarship losses back to Penn. St., in a two-year duration.

Well this should be interesting when all the coaches the experts have tossed out here either A) don't get offered the job (see Butch Davis) or B) have no interest in it (everyone else mentioned here).

Back to square one and another 3-5 year rebuilding process.

All that said, this was going to happen anyway. Golden was never going to stay here long. So I guess it's a moot point.

Hopefully, they will get lucky and get a coordinator who is qualified to be a HC or someone at DII school who is ready to move up to DI. That's probably all UM can afford.

^^^^^^^^

I would bet good money not one of these names is remotely possible. Petrino might be a possibility if he didn't have baggage. UM is not going to hire anyone with any baggage whatsoever right now. The person will have to be squeaky, and I bleached out squeaky clean. That's the reality whether people like it or not.

Some of them are just silly. Orgeron stunk it up at Ole Miss and had a decent half a season at USC. They didn't even interview him. Hmmmm.

Where has Chudzinki been a HC except for one season with the Cleveland Browns and he got fired. Hey, let's just find any ex UM player and hire them...

Last time I checked the three best coaches UM had, Schellenberger, Johnson, and Erickson had absolutely ZERO connections to the program.

Watch the decommits starts on Monday. Some of these players were needed (especially in the secondary and at RB) next year if UM was going to have any chance at a 8 or 9 win season.

What a F-O-O-L believes! No wonder most of major college fan-dom LAUGH at you and your Cane cohorts.

IF Golden leaves now, it will show that he was never anything more than just talk. It's always been about the process and deserve victory, then right before NSD he bolts. Doing the right thing and the right thing for his buddies are two completely different things. It's clear IF he leaves, his pals always came before The U, which was becoming apparent to everyone anyways.

I hope he goes, but for the sake of Duke, Tracy, and the guys that have committed to bring Miami back (including this upcoming class), I hope Miami is ready to bring in someone deserving of leading again. Chud would be my first pick and if not, let's get someone is more about our Canes than their boyfriends. At The U, loyalty still means family first. Time for our leadership to reflect that.

Head coach at University of Miami: Home of 5 National Champions, 46 1st Round Draft Picks, 35 Bowl appearances, 20 National Award Winners & An Unrivaled FUTURE!

Straight from Golden's Twitter page. Let's see how much of that unrivaled future Golden really saw. Ball's in your court coach. You sold me on the process from day one and I believed. Lately, I've been let down by your lack of action regarding a defense that has been 90th or worse for consecutive seasons (which no other program in the country would've allowed to happen). Now, you are with us or against us. All of those things you kept talking about here at Miami. Time to see if you're just a used car salesman or the leader you proclaim to have always been.

ESPN says that Golden is at least speaking with PSU, and what I find interesting is other coaches who were being courted for other schools, like Briles and Saban, they come out and say right off the bat, 'thanks but no thanks', and Al hasn't done that, so this might not turn out well. If he does go, then I have to say that's a pretty POS thing to do, but I'm keeping that under wraps in case he doesn't.

Like Golden, BUT his coordinators really stink. They will stink at PSU to. Don't claim to know EVERTHING about football. I do know what a completely worthless defensive coordinator looks like. What really puzzles me is the fact that Al Golden was a defensive coach. How can this guy just look the other way on the defense. How?????? Why???..

I know some of us still hate Butch Davis because he left us the way he did. When the NFL calls a college coach, most of them go. Butch was no exception.

What Butch can do is win at the college level. 3 year and UNC was a bad ass team before they got in trouble w/ the ncaa. And, before you guys start about the ncaa problem at UNC. One word NEVIN.

Peace to all my fellow CANES.

I tend to agree with you on this. I work with a Penn State grad. He doesn't know anything, but he's really excited about getting Golden.

On the defense there are just no impact players there. You have to have a great safety, at least one CB who can play man, and a really strong DT. Our players are good but there is no Cortez Kennedy, Jerome Brown, or Ed Reed on the defense. I think the coaches did the best they could with what they had. If Golden had stayed, I think this years class would have turned the corner and we could have expected big things in 2015. Now, all bets are off.

And for the Butch Davis people, get a life, he's 62 years old. That may work at Alabama where the HC has 5 assistants to clean his toilet, but at a school the size of UM, we need a younger coach. He also has a lot of negatives regarding his tenure at NC. They aren't going to hire someone right now he has a bunch of negatives. Too close to the recent NCAA problems.

Chudzinski might be the best they can do but something tells me he's more of a coordinator than a recruiter/program seller. This program needs a program seller right now to get the players. For High School kids his name wouldn't mean anything. He played at UM in the 80's. Great player, I remember seeing him play in person.

Hopefully they can find someone young.

I actually hope Golden stays, but why would he. Let's face it Penn State is a much better job. Oh well.

My worry here is the stellar class we're on the verge of getting. If AG leaves we could lose them all. Now I may be wrong, we may end up with a coach who can sway the kids into staying, but it's the timing of it all. Signing day is Feb 8th, and we don't the luxury of time to find a good coach IF we have to start looking, and the recruits might say, well Miami is starting all over AGAIN, so no thanks. Again I may be wrong and HOPE I am.

The NCAA problems at NC is probably why he won't get called. Also he is 62 years old. That would give him about 3 more years. I would hope the Admin would take a longer term view than that. Besides, he's not going to win 10 games with the current roster. Nick Saban, Bob Stoops, et al couldn't win 10 games with the current roster.

We just need to accept that we probably have lost 2 years off the rebuild with Golden leaving.

Gotta disagree with that statement. How is PSU a much better job? PSU is still under sanctions, it's colder than a witches teet most of the time, PSU is not in the thick of things very often as far as major bowls or BCS. Granted Miami hasn't been either but it has a better chance of getting back to the top with the right man at the helm, and of course the weather, recruiting hot bed, I mean look at (potential) class coming in at No. 3, where is PSU's. We don't have a stadium and fickle fans, but we won 5 titles with that, and when you win they will come. I hope he stays too!

PSU is sending a committee to meet with AG tomorrow, and to me that's NOT F'ing good.

Palm Post says that Butch would interview if job comes open but I think they would never give him that after the way he left and what happened at UNC. Would be fun though.

I like Al. If he stays D'Nofrio has to go. If he leaves, there is plenty of coaches with ties to Miami. Chud would be good, Franklin if we can pony up the cash, plus several others. Canes would need to act fast to keep recruits though. If they ever did give Butch a chance, the program would be buzzing with excitement. Put the band back together!

I agree about Dno, but I also think Al is good for us, BUT if he would jeopardize everything just for his bud then I have to quote Spock, 'the needs of the many outweigh, the needs of the few, or the one'. I'd really be shocked if he leaves, and the recruits would be as well.

I think the Golden and Philbin situations are the same. Both have shown potential to be good head coaches. However both are being held back by a friend as a coordinator. You can't hold back the organization for your friend. I want Golden to stay and keep building but I am bothered that no changes have been made yet. Maybe Golden can use this situation to get more money for his staff and hire better coordinators.

When they first hired Golden I thought he was the type of guy wanted to go to the NFL. Now I think he just wants to be a college coach (nothing wrong with that and they do get paid more... :-) ). PSU is a better college coaching job because of the things you mentioned. The stadium, the fans, the pay check, they are in the Big 10 which is less of basketball conference than the ACC. I know FSU is in the title game, but really football is king in the Big 10.

I think there is no way he turns this job down if offered. I bet they will offer him the job tomorrow. They appear to want to move on quick. Golden is a great choice for them given how he has handled our NCAA problems.

To me the obvious fast replacement is Schiano. But given our situation, it might be better to just take our lumps for another 2-3 years and find the right coach.

People here think UM has the money to throw at football staff like some of the big State U's. They don't. You should see how many people UT has on their football staff. Golden and his staff were always going to be a work in progress. If they succeeded he probably would have left anyway for greener pastures. It's too bad he didn't finish the job. I think he would have in 2015 or 2016.

We have some good players but we don't have a QB or game changers on Def yet. That is the difference between 10 -12 wins and 7-9 wins. This recruiting class was looking really good. Doubtful we keep it together.

I still don't get the Butch Davis worship. He's a good coach and was a good recruiter. He's been out of the loop for a few years and he's 62 years old. UM needs someone younger.

Maybe we get lucky and get our Jimmy Johnson this time around. That's what it is going to take.

We need a hire like Franklin at Vanderbilt. No way he comes to UM. His next paycheck will bet more than we can write.

Great points by all for an against.

myself personally I think that he should go for a few reasons.

1. he is not and will never be a Miami guy.
2. he has not been able to get the kids to come here that will change the culture. as a matter of a fact most of the kids that came here came in spit of him and more for the U tradition or to stay local (duke, tracy howard, and Stacey cooley)

One reason to leave is:

The big ten sucks. As much as it disgusts me 100,000 disgusting rapist lovers pack that stadium every home game, and most important Christian hackenburg is a stud quarterback and he will be there for the next two years for sure. he might even stay all four years because he loves the idea of playing for that school just like duke does with the U.

If I where him I would bolt, have the opportunity to claim that he can reserect programs from the deps of crisis. most importantly what penn state is going through and will continue to go through is uncommon to most, but not to al golden unfortunately that is all he knows IE* (bowl suspension, scholarship reduction, and public shame)

As a matter of fact he is the man for the job, he is the only one that might actually stay for the long haul.

That's just it Ricky. He will retire from there. They will cut him slack because he is a Paterno guy. But don't kid yourself. Eventually he will win there. They have the money to hire the staff, the have the stadium, the tradition, ect.

A big plus for Penn State of course is he is now known in S. Fla high schools.

I'm not sure what people mean by "Miami guy." Was Jimmy Johnson a Miami guy? He came from Oklahoma State and played CF at Arkansas.

If we have had a better coach than him I'd like to know who it is. Butch Davis btw played CF at Arkansas too.

If you stop to think about it, every coach we've had that won moved on eventually. The only two we fired recently were Shanon and Coker. You can't say Shanon wasn't a "Miami guy." From Miami, played football at Miami. So what exactly is a
"Miami guy?" I'm not trying to be snarky, I'm just curious because I keep seeing that mentioned.

Honestly, I think the reality is we have to hope we can get a good coach who can recruit well, then hope he stays for more than 3 years. We'd be doing good if we could just get that.

If Golden leaves for Penn State, will Ron Zook blame his departure on the fans like he does about Butch leaving UM for the NFL?

National Signing Day is a month away... if Golden leaves, our recruiting class will be in shambles. If his loyalty was to The U, he should be using this time to evaluate his coaching staff (D'Onofrio and James Coley) and not meeting with Penn State.

Then again, if his loyalty was to The U then he would have fired Mark D'Onofrio after last year's 116th ranked defense!

Interesting news...

James

A Miami guy is not a geographic deal. It is a style of play, an attacking offense and an attacking defense. It is an attitude, it is hit or be hit, and you always are the one who hits first. It is a confidence that yes, we are better than you, we are going to run it when we want to and then we are going to throw a few over the top. We don't sit back and play zone for three plays in a row. We shoot gaps, we blitz when we want to and not when we have to and if you are lucky enough to catch the ball, we gonna knock you on the butt and make you wish you didn't catch that there ball. We are going to have linebackers who are physical, and safeties you fear. We practice in the heat because we will be better prepared and in better condition than any thing you would do in a weight room .

We dominate on all sides of the ball. Our starters play special teams in big games when needed. We do everything to win, no excuses offered and none accepted. Our coach has a confidence to him, he believes his guys are the best and he is not afraid to say so. That is Miami culture. It isn't geography but it is a Canes thing.

Its time that miami go in a new direction. Eventhough coach golden is a great guy and motivator, his coaching style is not what it takes to get miami to a national championship level. miami does not win football games with speaches they with performance and production. I really don't think this coaching staff will get it done. they are not a high profile team, and seems to run a basic scheme and not a pro style system.considering that there are many NFL coaches available we need to get one as I head coach to run out program.with that said coach golden , I wish you luck, at Penn State University,,,,,,,,,,,Go canes,,,,,,,,,it's time to win championships once again.

Couple of blogs and reports saying Butch Davis has already reached out to UM to show interest in the HC job if Al Golden leaves. Most credible source being Palm Beach Post.

http://www.palmbeachpost.com/news/sports/college-football/reports-penn-state-has-ums-al-golden-on-shortlist-/ncb8c/

CaneSport has confirmed that Al Golden has been offered the head coaching job at Penn State. While expected to take it, no word yet from Al.

And there U have it. I'll bet that AG will take the job unless he gets heat from his wife and kids. Not sure the wife would like heading back to the Tundra. But, U just never know.

looks like al golden is going to penn state reported on rivals .com I hope buth davis comes back hee help clean up the last mess at um

At 6:12 pm, poster D gave us the scoop that CANESPORT had "confirmed that Al Golden has been offered the head coaching job at Penn State. While expected to take it, no word yet from Al." Thanks D...

Now, it is 11:05 pm and neither the Sentinel nor the Herald have mention a bleep about this sports' news. Not even a Tweet. I think them reporters at the SS and MH are a bunch of slackers. I think many of the guys and possibly gals on this blog do a better job of keeping on top of things than those paid reporters. Go figure.

They can look at Schiano or Mario Christobal. I think Schiano is a better coach than Golden.

@JOHN.... I think Schiano will light a fire in the players' butts. The dude is a no nonsense type of guy. I think he could do a lot better than he did at Rutgers because he'll have the players he wants really close. It'd be nice to have MC and Chud come in as assistants.

We'll see what happens. AG might not go, but I think he will.

Always good to see that wimp Urban Liar go down. Did he cry?

Hope the rumors are true about Charlie Strong to Texas. Would have loved to get him at The U but that's not gonna happen. Not sure if the Vandy guy is the right fit either. I think we need someone willing to set the tone with the administration rather than have it set by them.

Greg S seems like he would have that personality and mindset.

This is, of course all conjecture. The name I now propose IF Al leaves will, no doubt be usurped by dozens of you so-called geniuses and presented as your own brilliant thought.
Jim Tressel. Out there, his show cause over, and far better than the ex-UM assistants everyone keeps throwing out there. If the fans could get over the OSU hate, it's perfect irony, and at the same time a MAJOR step up from what is at UM n ow.

I like Al, and truly appreciate what he has accomplished. rot o9f Halfway to aha Butch accomplished. I'd wish him well.
Tressel would officially put UM back on the map, and his eye for great defensive players would soon eliminate the 500+ yards per game mess that is UM's D. (should be "d.")

He'd do his obligatory 3 years at UM, probably move back to the big 10 when Brady Hoke is fired. Ha, THAT would be MAJOR stuff.
