Five Canes invited to the NFL Combine: QB Morris, OG Linder, OT Henderson, WR Hurns & P O'Donnell

Five Hurricanes were invited to the NFL Combine next month in Indianapolis. Here's the release we just received from UM.

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Five Miami Hurricanes have accepted invitations to participate at the 2014 NFL Scouting Combine, while will be held Feb. 22-25 at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. The four-day combine will be televised live on NFL Network.

QB Stephen Morris, OG Brandon Linder, OT Seantrel Henderson, WR Allen Hurns and P Pat O’Donnell will be among the more than 300 prospects evaluated by all 32 NFL teams. Linder, Henderson and O’Donnell will work out on Feb. 22, while Morris and Hurns will work outFeb. 23.

Morris, a two-year starter under center and a 2013 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team member, finished his career ranked third in Miami history with 7,896 passing yards and 49 touchdowns. A 2013 All-ACC third-team selection, Morris is one of only two QBs in Miami history with multiple 3,000-yard passing seasons (Gino Torretta).

Linder started all 13 games along the offensive line in 2013 and concluded his career with 37 consecutive starters. He was a second-team All-ACC selection and was named the team’s Offensive MVP at the end of the season. Henderson, a third-team All-ACC selection, played in 12 games along the offensive line, making eight starts at right tackle.

Hurns enjoyed one of the greatest receiving seasons in program history in 2013. The second-team All-ACC receiver set a single-season school record with 1,162 receiving yards and finished with 62 receptions – the third-most in a single season. He finished his career ranked seventh in both receptions (121) and receiving yards (1,891).

In his one season in Coral Gables, O’Donnell made a considerable impact, setting the school single-season record with a 47.1 yards-per-punt average. A first-team All-ACC choice and second-team All-America selection by USA TODAY, O’Donnell booted 23 punts of 50+ yards and downed 19 inside the opponent’s 20-yard line.

Miami, in its third season under head coach Al Golden, finished 2013 with a 9-4 mark and an appearance in the Russell Athletic Bowl in Orlando.

Regarding Al Golden, still waiting for concrete news on Penn State. The coaches are on vacation this week, and it's a dead period recruiting wise.

Al has an afternoon news conference scheduled with the media on Monday. It was his regular end-of-the-year talk. We're all wondering if that will happen.

Not confident it will at this point.

We'll see.

Dom, all due respect, I don't give two rips about the gators.

Just ripping on AG's mediocrity and the fact that he really hasn't done much yet.

I like Al Golden; he's just not a very good FOOTBALL COACH. Think about it: how many times has an opposing team done something to the CANES in the first half of a game, but in the second half, the coaches came up with a game plan and SHUT THAT DOWN? How about almost NEVER? In-game adjustments? It's like they never heard of the concept. I've said it before: "Al Golden is a great guy and fine recruiter. An excellent "face of the football program". HOWEVER, let's be very clear about one very important thing: he is CONSTANTLY being out-coached and out-prepared in football games. Not only is he routinely being taken to school by legendary old timers like Frank Beamer & Bill Snyder, but he also is getting taken to the coaching woodshed by YOUNG coaches like Charlie Strong, Randy Edsal, and others. His loyalty to his long time friend and Defensive Coordinator Mark Donoffrio has led to Miami having a laughingstock Defense that routinely gives up 500 yards, most of it on the ground."

Word is that he already INTERVIEWED for the Penn State job! Does The U even WANT him after that? If he interviewed for the job but doesn't get it, why would we want him? It means he was ready to leave The U, and he probably WILL the next time a job offer comes up. And if he does stay, that means his pal Mark Donofrio also stays. And that is really bad news. The Miami Defense has become a joke under this guy. Even in the worst days of Randy Shannon the Defense was better than that! Even that last year of Colin McCarthy sucking up the Middle Linebacker position and constantly chasing opposing running backs after 40 yard runs straight up the middle...even THEN the Defense was not this bad! Wake up all you Al Golden lovers: the CANES are giving up 500 yards, much of it ON THE GROUND! ROUTINELY! That is not Miami Hurricanes football. If Al Golden stays, (and if he really interviewed for the Penn State job that's a big "IF"!)he absolutely needs to fire his best friend, Mark Donoffrio.

So who to replace him? I have no idea. Butch Davis? Interesting. But somehow I doubt it. Petrino? Schiano? I think it might be a dark horse. Someone like Clint Hurtt former Miami guy coaching at Louisville. Or Mario Cristobal, a guy who will ALWAYS be a CANE at heart. We shall see. But it appears as if the Al Golden era is coming to a close.

Alex - I like your passion on wanting to WIN NOW. No more Golden "patience and process" without accountability and results. We need a coach that has "Urgency to break down the wall". Great coaches like Saban and Meyer show that they can win by year three. Malzahn after year one.

I would wholeheartedly take Butch,Schiano, Chudz or Mario.

Also, the more I have been studying PETRINO, the more I like his resume. I also like that Jimmy Johnson lobbied for him to get rehired back at Arkansas. He seems to coach with a Hurricane passion. Roll up the points with a stingy defense.

I also like that he also feels like he has something prove, as well. Most of our winning coaches all came in with an attitude that they had something to prove. Schnelly, JJ, Dennis, Butch. Hence, not only should we be recruiting kids that have something to prove, but also coaches that have something to prove. They preach URGENCY NOT PATIENCE.

A strong push should be made toward Petrino if the school will not hire Butch:

Butch Daaaaaavis!!!!!!!

No Mario, he's NOT a good HC and better suited to what he's doing at Bama, being a position coach, plus he bolted as soon as Bama came sniffing. Why would you even mention him? I personally don't want Al to leave because we'll lose our recruits, but I will say this, it's pretty s-h-I-t-t-y thing to do stringing EVERYONE along like this. If you're staying or leaving then F'ing come out and say it, it's not fair to the current kids and their families, and it's not fair to the fans. He better damn sure make some type of announcement TODAY!!!!!

Cola,
It's out of AG's hands right now. He interviewed, all sweaty and dry mouthed, fumbling through a new binder....

Now HE has to wait as PSU interviews better football coaches.

Hopefully, his PR/Admin abilities outweight PSU's desire to win and the other candidates don't want the job as badly as AL. I am pulling for the guy.

mario, butch or schiano would be bad choices since UM would be doing exactly what it dd when it hired al golden....

anyone that does not have a verifiable winning track record should not be considered....

mario - 24-47
schiano - 68-67
butch - 28-23

forget it!

better to go after a DC with NO HC experience if you cant get a HC with a winning track record.....

see strong goes to Texas.....37-15 / 20-9 conference....that's why...especially when it comes to conference record...extremely important after this year with playoffs coming....

if your conference play is bad....the teams goes nowhere....

All signs point to him leaving.

1. He doesn't have to make any coaching changes in his staff if he decides to leave.

2. Our fans are very hard to please compared to those in Happy Valley and they actually come to watch their team win or lose.

3. He will get paid more money to work from HOME.

I like Golden and actually would want him to stay, but he will have to fire and hire a better coaching staff if he is going to day anything special at Miami. You cannot blame our poor play of our defense on the lack of talent even though we do lack elite talent in key positions. I've seen teams like Virginia Tech win 10 games and the ACC championship game with a lot less talent than our 5-7 teams had on our rosters.

If he decides to stay then Coach D'Onofrio has to be released. He actually told Nigel Bethel that the reason we don't have a better scheme is because we do not have the elite talent.

If he decides to go then please bring back Butch Davis. Desperate times call for desperate measures and hiring Butch Davis would at least shore up our defense over night.

Agree with Gallo on Mario and Schiano. Think BD could do really well, really quickly here, but the Admin probably wouldn't touch him.

Alex,

Right, how are we supposed to want this as our coach after he tries to leave.

Fire Al Golden!

I love butch BUT!!! hes been out of it for a LONG TIME....

NC: 28-23 / 15-17 conference
CL: 24-35 .414 win%

NOPE.....doesn't make the benchmark....plus nobody wants him....thats the hard cold reality....he is an aged beauty queen...he aint winning any more pageants.

Strong to Texas. No Clint Hurt because he's sanctioned, so glad that came back to bite him in the ass.

I agree Butch is too old. We might not have much of a choice though. Chud is the best candidate in my opinion. Some people are saying Franklin, but I don't know much about him.

stats - data are not an ABSOLUTE but they are the best indicators for success probability....

A guy has to have the stats + data in his area of expertise to win at UM....its only logical....

example: Pat narduzzi

2010 - #43
2011 - #6
2012 - #4
2013 - #2

that type of success progression....that's what you look for...

pat narduzzi would be my choice....he is more what UM money could realistically get.....love todd bowles but in reality UM would never pay his price....

While waiting on "The Decision". Lol. I want to happily admit I was completely and absolutely wrong.

Charlie Strong was hired by the University of Texas. I thought the boosters, board of trustees, or someone, would stop the hire. Even though Texas now has, possible, the two best coaches in all of college football.

The great thing is that the most dominate and knowledgeable football players, African Americans, maybe, possible, will get a some interest. From those that hire for coaching positions that are always coming available.

pass on chudzinski also....he dont have it either....if your gonna go that route then you might as well hire mario.....

heres a name....chadd morris / OC at clemson...

Morris would be sweet. There are so many good candidates besides mario, chud, schiano and beloved butch...good thing on psu search is franklins supposed desire to go nfl.

I wouldn't mind Franklin

Beed, just curious about this binder obsession. Do you not like Larranagra either? He records everything he does in multiple binders---practice outlines, game strategy, defenses, offenses, etc.??

J. Gallo, I personally don't want to be Clemson. Good on defense, but not against great teams. Offensively, maybe, but we don't really want to be Clemson here. You say Butch didn't win enough, but if he had stayed, add 13 wins in the next 2 years while here.(Cokers wins year 1-2). The point is, he can develop players into NFL type talent. I don't care if any ever get there, it's what they can do here. So say Butch came here,(I don't believe it will happen), he could coach us back to relevance, and hire the asst coach to be "coach in waiting". Like FSU, Texas, and a few others have done. The new guy will have his on the job training and for once, the program keeps going. Just a opinion, I think BD is one of the top 3 UM coaches ever, in all phases of the job. We shall see

this all pycho-babble...golden is not going anywhere......

just look at his wife.....she wears the pants in the family.....she aint leaving, lol....trust me you'll see.

Rumor has Golden may be trying to squeeze Miami for more money for his assistants. If thats the case I say let him go to PSU. We're already paying his BFF $500,000, and getting a $50,000 product. I'm really beginning to lose faith in UM administration.

Maybe he brings Schiano with him as coach in waiting. After all Schiano did give him a job in Tampa Bay while he was out of coaching. Could return the love the same way.

exactly beed: UM does not need anymore "average" guys.....

128) Sort People into Other Jobs at Bridgewater, or Remove Them from Bridgewater
... 129) When you find that someone is not a good “click” for a job, get them out of it ASAP.
... 130) Know that it is much worse to keep someone in a job who is not suited for it than it is to fire someone.
... 131) When people are “without a box,” consider whether there is an open box at Bridgewater that would be a better fit. If not, fire them.
... 132) Do not lower the bar.

that's all golden has to do....that's what is missing in his 300 page binder....that goes for coley as well....

if he gonna stay...announce major coaching shake up....turn the tide....create interest and curiosity....then come back with a solid hire....that's how you do it

I do hope Al Golden goes to Penn State. Thanks and goodbye.

Our recruiting class is a concern.

It is obvious that D'Onofrio will be at UM if Golden stays. This is bad news for the future. These guys are excuse makers and blamers of players. Their "it is up to us to fix it" line is old and tiresome, because it hides their real belief about our talent level as the problem, not them.

I wish it was different and we were showing the kind of promise that our team does have,

These guys can not take UM to national prominence. Golden has a lot of positives, and has done some good things. But PSU is where he belongs. It is his style.

The coaches do not connect with the players in a way that creates a psychological core of fierce loyalty, respect and dedication. Look at how we wilt against good to excellent teams. "The Process" will not carry the day. Good talent and great coaching will.

We have good talent now.

As one writer put it, he would feel "gratitude" for the things Golden has done, but "would not be sorry to see him go." A reasonable sentiment, no?

Booster Ms. Moskowitz would support Davis or Chud or any other coach that can bring championships to UM. She exhorts all boosters to open their checkbooks.

I am hoping for a new beginning at University of Miami. The time is right...

first of all butch failed at NC (15-17 conference), so if you cant win your conference your done...then he totally came apart at Cleveland....his success at UM was almost 20 years ago....too long to measure for today s requirements....

schiano is hated by his own players.....hes a "dick" plus 68-67 plus 28-48 conference...that aint gonna work in the ACC next year....

golden is not leaving UM for sub zero weather in PA.....

If one used the Gallo statistics/list obsessed approach, you know where you need a progression, you'd never have hired Jimmy Johnson.

Oh, and the "trust me" from Galloinda is priceless.

that's why its not an ABSOLUTE green pea....cant you read?

what they didn't teach you that at miami-dade (south campus)?

if golden leave I'll never blog here again....how about you if he stays?

Chud is a way better choice than Cristobal.

Chud wwas an nfl oc and head coach. he has a great offensive mind and can move people. cleveland was stupid to let him go.

cristobal coached fiu...lol

What have we been saying about Goldilocks and D'No not understanding Miami style football, from our very own Barry Jackson:

### Something to keep in mind if Al Golden stays at UM instead of going to Penn State: Even though several UM defensive players have praised coordinator Mark D’Onofrio publicly, some have expressed frustration privately because they want to play a more attacking style.

What’s more, several Board of Trustees members also have complained about D’Onofrio, and the administration is well aware of that.

A key UM oral commitment, cornerback Nigel Bethel, wants to see changes in the defensive approach and announced: “I want a new scheme.” He is now considering other schools, as well as UM.

D’Onofrio and Golden like to blitz some but prefer to rush four and not give up the big play. Some players would like to play more man-to-man and less zone. Make no mistake: Golden is very much involved in the schemes this defense plays. He and D'Onofrio share similar philosophies.

One UM football staffer privately expressed a concern that D’Onofrio’s system might be too complicated. But even before Penn State started pursuing Golden, the UM administration wasn't inclined to try to force him to make staff changes.

If Golden doesn't leave its because psu doesn't want him.

He should look for another job because he's never going to mend fences with our fan base. The damage is done.

Davis, Schiano and Chudzinski are all great choices if Al were to leave. Cristobal hasn't proven anything. Chad Morris and James Franklin are spread guys and we want to run pro style offense here at the U. It took 5 years for Narduzzi to build a successful defense at MSU. It will never work here with the impatient fans we have.

Chud as HC with Davis handling the D will be a great combination for us. Sneaky Pete did a great job at USC after failing in the NFL now he is successful, so Schiano will be great for us as well.

Coach AG, we appreciate you staying with us through this NCAA mess. But, please don't let the U keep hanging with this suspense.

Make no mistake: Golden is very much involved in the schemes this defense plays. He and D'Onofrio share similar philosophies.

Your entire, Barry Jackson, post is very close to what you and observant Miami football fans have said for years. Now it's come to light, it is an example of terrible journalism.

There was never was any evidence that Al Golden was not involved in the disastrous defense. While he was never held responsible for Miami's lack of success with him.

The comment I copied was for everyone of those Al Golden fans that gloss over Al Golden connection to the defensive failure here.

Is it football season yet,

Good points. If you are a HC and your defense consistently gives up 500 plus yards a game against decent to excellent opponents, you MUST make a change.

If your buddy is the DC, has a good gig, lives in a great city, you WILL NOT make a change because loyalty trumps results.

I remember early on when D'Onofrio was told about fans being upset. He stated something like the only fans he cared about were the ones in his home.

Now that is how you build relationships, right?

Yah, OK DNO. We can do without you as well, and after watching your defenses, hope we will real soon.

The philosophy of Golden and D'Onofrio will NEVER fit for UM. It runs counter to the kids they are recruiting, especially fast, aggessive style players who want man coverage and blitzes as a central defensive strategy. Attack. Don't you see how it wipes out YOUR offense, coaches?

As someone said, it runs counter to the "essence" of UM football tradition. Not good.

These are no midwest kids who will sit back in position and make a hit when the ball carrier or receiver arrives. They want to get after it. But the coaches don't get the whole speed - aggression issue.

I supported these guys. After three years, it is clear that these are the wrong coaches for us. The posters who dissed on the MAC thing were correct.

Mea Culpa. I am a perennial optimist. I want UM to succeed on some big stages.

Look at the results. And this team culture is not driving confidence and aggressive play coming out of the tunnel. Quite the opposite. To me, "flat" means fearful and lacking the fire of confidence.

And that is inferior coaching, prep, scheming and motivation via strong realtionships with players...

Is this even news? Coach AG has repeatedly said everything goes through him and this D philosophy was fully approved by him. That's why Coach D was not going to go anywhere and the hope was as they got superior talent the execution was going to be better irrespective of the scheme.

Mahoney Pearson,

Now you see there is always an "other side of the story" regarding how players feel about this garbage scheme. They failed to report it because it didn't fit the PR agenda of making it appear that everything was perfect in Al's locker room.

Now that the report of Al flirting with Pedo St they feeling a certain kind of way and now leaking info about how players really feel about this scheme. Where is the interview with Tracy Howard and Highsmith now?

Wait until Al officially leaves, Manny, Susan and Barry is going to really give us the dirt.

Barry Jackson

GKC,
The binder joke just refers to AG's fluff. I love Larranaga and his nibders - because he gets it done. JL can have alllll the binders he wants.

Canesjunkie,
Cristobal, LOL - yup! no way, please no.

Strong to Texas a great move for them. I love Strong.

Narduzzi would be a great get. What about Greg Roman? he could be really good.

But, to the point raised by Canesjunkie, myself and Gallo...Golden ain't gettin' hired at PSU - Unlike Gallo, I don't think the wife has ANYTHING to do with any of this. He just straight isn't gettin the job.

I don't think this is a ploy to squeeze UM for more money or autonomy - he has had us right where he wants us since 2011 and his meritless contract extension. He doesn't have to do D^&k about any asst. coaching changes either.

It is interesting that he HAS to know that there will be blowback for having, as I think it was Truth pointed out, "done the courtesy of interviewing when mama calls", and putting the recruits and program in this situation...

I think he's made his big chess move and can only hope it pans out.

Blowback and resentment and some distrust moving forward, even for those fans who have supported AG unquestioningly to this point.

Truth is, a simple majority of UM fans don't want him to go; think he doing fine here.

This attempt will have consequences for him if he stays that may benefit those of us fans who wanted to see him coot DNO.

See, he tried for the move, won't get it, will have to save face since we will be stuck with each other, and may make a assistant coaching move to prove he is responsive to the rumblings of discontent.

Holy typos, sorry.

Funny, folks are throwing out names like Chad Morris and Mario Cristobal who have not proven anything anywhere. AG is a much better option compared to these two. Narduzzi is probably like our OC Coley at FSU. Not fully in charge of the D that is being run by Dantonio.

That's what I was thinking. Chud as HC. Butch as DC. Good post Football

No justification for keeping Dnofrio, that defense is horrendous. I feel bad for the recruits coming in to play in that defense.

Simply,

AG made his move.
Doesn't get the job.
Has to face the UM family.
Forced to make some changes.
Because NOW any honeymoon is OVER.
Scrutiny will be high moving forward.
We benefit any which way, maybe not like some of us wanted...
But we'll end up better for all this.

And what sucks, that there are so many great candidates who could help take us in a new, better direction.

Posted by: Canesjunkie | January 05, 2014 at 12:16 PM

If AG stays Coach D stays for good or bad. Clearly, the HC is responsible for the successes/ failures of the team and if that's what he chooses well then it is up to him.

I fear you are right, hope you are wrong, Football.

naaaaaaa, I think his wife has alot of say-so.....too many quotes in herald the last 2 years about his family settling and loving south florida....

unless the psu offer is exponentially better than UM money he stays....he has a talent rich backyard and great weather....coaching-playing-watching football in the cold s...cks
