From Miami to Los Angeles: 6-7, 327-pound lineman Malcolm Bunche leaves Miami Hurricanes for UCLA

So, the East Coast wasn't always great for Malcolm Bunche, whose playing time dwindled in 2013 for the Miami Hurricanes.

Now he's trying the West Coast.

Malcom is transferring to UCLA to play his final season at UCLA, his dad, Curtis Bunche, just told me.

Curtis Bunche said Malcolm will be playing tackle at UCLA, head coach Jim Mora and the other coaches told him, rather than guard. "Every single coach that contacted us lately said, ‘Are you kidding me, this kid with his measurables (6-7, 327 pounds) and his feet – he’s a tackle.'"

"I talked to Malcolm last night for quite a while and he was very impressed with his overall experience with the trip there to UCLA, the tour of the campus, his conversation with the head coach and offensive coordinator – and even more so his offensive line coach [Adrian Klemm]. He’s had several years of NFL experience as an O-lineman and has [three] Super Bowl rings [with the New England Patriots]."

UCLA was 10-3 this past season and beat Virginia Tech in the Sun Bowl, 42-12.

"Malcolm talked about the overall concept under Jim Mora being basically an NFL concept, an NFL approach. He had some time with an academic advisor regarding his pursuit to get his Master’s degree. He was gone the entire weekend.

"His trip prior to UCLA was to Texas Tech on Friday during the day. He flew out Saturday to Los Angeles."

Curtis Bunche said Malcolm called the UCLA campus "breathtaking.''

Curtis said "there was no problem with his release at UM. Obviously UM tried to get him to stay. They went as far as calling his high school coach to ask him to get him to stay. You have to respect that.''

But in the end, Bunche obviously realized he played minimally in 2013, and with only one season of eligibility left, he felt he needed a better opportunity.

UCLA quarterback Brett Hundley, a Heisman Trophy contender, completed 248 of 369 passes (67.2 percent) for 3,071 yards and 24 touchdowns, with 9 interceptions this past season.  But he was sacked 35 times.

In contrast, the Hurricanes allowed 17 total sacks -- and that's including the four in the Russell Athletic Bowl.

"They need an O-lineman to protect that Heisman Trophy candidate's blind side,'' said Curtis Bunche of his son.

It's Westwood, not Brentwood. A great coach and a cool community. and a hot QB...

Best wishers to Malcolm and his family.

Go Canes!

Dude, they're not but-raping 9 y.o. boys at the Hect. That's a flagrant and reckless comparison.

This happens everywhere at every level and, at the end of the day, Al believes his hand-picked DC who runs HIS defense, and has had success doing it before, needs an opportunity--as the entire coaching staff does--to perform and be evaluated on a clean slate without the untoward outside influences of past seasons.

When you sell out the guys you've have had success with, who helped to put you in a position of power, that's when you punch your own ticket out of town. That's the beginning of the end.

"Offensive coordinator Dan Werner, assistant head coach/offensive coach Art Kehoe, running backs coach Don Soldinger and linebackers coach Vernon Hargreaves were each called into Coker's office Monday morning and dismissed."

Kehoe and Soldinger didn't forget how to coach when they got canned. It was a lack of talent that did them in. As much as there were able to produce and as good as anyone wants to believe they are as coaches, they can't make a donkey run with thoroughbreds.

Let this staff get the talent and then see what they can do.

“For me, there couldn’t be more of a perfect picture set for me. They will give me the chance to compete for a national title"

Is this kid really that naive and dumb ? How did he even qualify with a Dommasse pea brain nonsense statement like that. Boy is in for a rude awakining when he sees that he'll never win a Coastal and need to put up 50+ a game as his 'efense will give up 45+ a game.

http://sebastianspub.wordpress.com/2014/01/06/no-d-in-coral-gables/ Here are the actual facts about our HORRIBLE, AWFUL>>>>>> D WITH SKIRTS..... PLZZZZ READ

Here is another article that came out, but before it came out I was arguing with U fans on twitter that I watched Al's conference with the media that Monday after the PSU crap, I was telling everybody I could tell In Al's body language he did not want to be here, he looked lost and very upset about PSU not wanting him, HE WANTED THAT REAL BAD......AND THEN THIS CAME OUT, AND EVERYTHING I HAD WAS IN IT ( REPEAT EVERYTHING )ITS LIKE SOMEONE COPIED MY TWEETS>>>>> http://www.pageqsports.com/2014/01/al-goldens-clock-ticking/#.UtSPs_-fP50.twitter

I know that you can't invest fully into the star ranking system, but on Rivals, they moved 6 players up from 4 star up to 5 star status. 3 of the players (2 FSU commits and 1 who will flip from the 'Turds and be an FSU commit) are from South Florida- Travis Rudolph, Dalvin Cook, and Ermon Lane. Rudolph was an early UM commit and I thought we may have had a chance with Cook and Lane.

I know that we can not get ALL the top talent in South Florida, it would be impossible because there is way too much and we truly have a very good class (if we don't have anymore decommits), but we are not finishing strong and I think it has 35% to do with how we finished the regular season in key games (losses to Duke and Va Tech), 45% to do with the debacle that we called a bowl game against Louisville. That game was totally embarrassing, especially for the coaching staff due to it's lack or preparation and failure to adjust in game and a halftime. The last 20% is due to CAG's flirtation with Penn State and having D'Nofrio as a DC. I know that the 3 players mentioned above are all offensive players, but these guys have eyes and see that with our current DC and be it the scheme, the coaching or lack of development that we have on that side of the football, it will be hard for UM to beat every decent team that they play 62-59. They know that our defense can't stop anyone and that fact, along with how we play in big games makes it hard to finish strong in recruiting with top talent.

Lastly, with the latest decommitments and us going after several 2 star players (again, I do not believe totally in the star system and yes I KNOW THE ED REED WAS A 2 STAR PLAYER) to fill those positions, we will continually be in the predicament of this coaching staff saying "we are not where we want to be talent wise to compete for an ACC championship", much less a Natty. It is like this staff is making their own built in excuse. It is like a self fulfilling prophecy.

30 years Cane fan, DONT EVER CHALLENGE ME, I KNOW MY S- - T. Do U fans know that Al Golden went to the NCAA hearing and did not tell them, THAT THEY HELD BACK 9 SCHOLARSHIPS, So when the NCAA took 9 away, the U asked them to take the 9 that they saved.... NCAA SAID NO, ITS THE U FAULT, NOT THE NCAA, If Golden or Shalala would have told them about the 9, we would be able to field a full 85 instead of 82, they are taking 3 per yr for the next 3 yrs.... HERE IS THE KICKER LMAO, Since they didn't tell the ncaa they held 9 back, MIAMI GOT BURNT, AL GOLDEN USING THE EXCUSE WE NEED DEPTH, GUESS WHAT U HAD 9 SCHOLARSHIPS, THAT COULD HAVE BEEN USED LAST YEAR FOR DEPTH.... ROFLMAO..... THE U COULD HAVE BEEN AT FULL STRENGTH THIS YEAR OR MORE DEPTH ON TEAM>>>>>>>>> THEY GOT NEITHER ONE....... GREAT JOB AL GOLDEN CAUSED MORE HARM, THEN THE NCAA DID...... WAKE UP U FANS.... HE IS IN OVER HIS HEAD

I PASTED THE ESPN SCORECARD. Alabama has 17 ESPN 300 players, LSU 14, UF/FSU/Miami all tied with 12, and that counts the 3 decommits. Goldie has a chance to catch Saban with a strong finish. Lists 5 star 4 star, # of espn 3oo players and offense or defense

Alabama SEC 24 17 4 17 3 9 12 1 2
LSU SEC 18 14 1 14 3 7 7 1 1
Florida SEC 21 12 1 15 5 8 8 0 2
Florida State ACC 29 12 0 15 13 13 12 0 2
Miami (FL) ACC 26 12 0 13 12 11 13 0 1
Ohio State Big Ten 22 11 1 15 6 8 8 1 5

Guys I have a good friend who knows a friend of Chad Thomas he's good as gone! Expect him to sign with Alabama. He will keep it under wraps because he's not trying to have all the hoopla around him decommiting. He's gone guys. First Valentine now Thomas what a loss!

Coral Gables isn't a real college atomposhere like FSU, Bama, LsU and these kids don't care about the tradition the Canes had. Between the private campus and noooo college atmosphere game I don't expect the U to compete with the upper eschelon programs

Chad Thomas is going to Bama! You heard it hear first!

All the best to you Malcolm, hope you do well at UCLA and hope you complete your masters.

"GoldenGate".......the 9 scholarships never knew about...but it figures.....

mistake after mistake.......amateur hour at its best

With some of the comments regarding the 'Canes why do these so called "fans" even watch this team?.

Gallo is a 'Gator who probably is here to stir what he can. Cut and paste drivel, so "Be Aware", "Be very aware".

If we lose 2-3 recruits because of this negativity, who should we blame?... "Our fans".
Come on people
Go 'Canes

*** FAU Gets SIX Big Recruit Commits Over The Weekend ***
And u got none ... but they loved their vacation though.

OH NO! Lets see who they got that has the gatr in such a tizzy. A 2 star and five zero star players.

Henry Bussey RB Hialeah (Hialeah, FL) TWO STARS, #165 in his position.
Siffo Pierre OT J. P. Taravella (Pompano Beach, FL) NO STARS
Matt Solt OLB Gainesville (Gainesville, FL) NO STARS
Raekwon Williams WR First Coast (Jacksonville, FL) NO STARS
Jacob Wilson TE Chipley (Chipley, FL) NO STARS
Landon Scheer K First Academy (Orlando, FL) NO STARS

Sounds like you should be talking trash at FAU instead of Miami. After all, the gatrs MIGHT still be able to beat FAU.

Your welcome Susan..cutie ;)

Who cares about Thomas and Valentine. Forston was a 5 star- where he at now?

By the way- Ill believe what these d bags on this blog have to say. All you are morons

Golden is a great coach and great recruiter. You n--gaz just havent given him a chance. But I will. And many of us real cane fans will

You Malcolm xers are just pi--d that he took randy Shannons job. The same Randy shannon who went from being head coach at miami to linebackers coach at Ark and cant get an open hc job to save his life. Why not I ask?

Answer_ because we were cursed with the worse coach in miami history. And everyone knows!

Posted by: Ray McDonald

Yeah wow gee Ray thanks for the insider info bro, yeah we may as well not even field a team, and just drop our football program altogether. We're doomed, and thanks again Ray for your words of wisdom.

Good luck Malcolm. It seems like this is the type of guy we want on our team. Very classy and yet he is the one leaving. Too bad for the Canes. It is UCLAs win

I am seeing on twitter that fsu and alabummer are going hard on Thomas.

He tweeted a pic of himself in Um gear yesterday.

F-Mario Cristobal coming after our guy...We shall see.
Reading alot of the drivel on here over the last week is why I had taken a break from this blog.

See ya on signing day or if something real happens in the meantime.

Beed I honestly believe Chad will be a Cane, he's throwing up the U everywhere, he reaffirmed his commit the other day, and pretty sure he'll be wearing orange n green.

This is what happens when a real hc evaluates his coaching staff

@MikeReiss: Changes on Patriots coaching staff as Pepper Johnson will not be back in 2014. More to come.

All I can say is Gallo actually has a good point with the casualties. Golden always talks about depth, saying we don't have enough depth. Well if he keeps half of the guys on gallos list he would not have depth problems. So then let's say that happens. We'll all of a sudden we have depth but still can't win a big game. What excuse does Goldie use next? I would think he would need too evaluate his coaching staff along with himself. Most of the guys that are gone for discipline issues were Miami Guys. Miami is known for having swag and be a rough cut type of breed. I'm tired of all the excuses. Goldie is always talking about the sanctions effecting recruiting but our classes have still been better than Michigan state classes. I don't care if they do play in the big ten. The acc isn't much better. So what golden is basically saying to more than half of his recruits is that if not for the NCAA investigation he could have gotten better players for his team and at least half of you guys on his team aren't good enough but he had to settle on you anyways. That's not the kind of guy that you want running your team. Zookeeper you need to come back down to reality. This team and coaching stuff sucks and won't get better until it changes. If the ever make a change maybe you can change you name to The Real Al Goldem

Chad Thomas will definitely be a Cane. This Ray guy is just trying to ruffle feathers or his friend of a good friend of a friend of Chad Thomas is wrong.

Sorry, Sunny Dee, Ronald McDonald knows what he is talking about. Here was his original quote:

"Um, Chad Thomas, he's going to Alabama. My best friend's sister's boyfriend's brother's girlfriend heard from this guy who knows this kid who's going with the girl who saw Chad Thomas talking to Nick Saban at 31 Flavors last night. I guess it's pretty serious."

Gallos list is the dumbest thing I've ever seen. It's zero sum you dunce. If an Alex Collins had stayed, then someone else becomes a "casualty". Every team has a "casualty" list. Every kid that goes to auburn, didn't go to Alabama. Do I now create a saban casualty list? There are a finite number of roster spots. We "lose" Bunche but "gain" darling. Can you really be that stupid? Not quite as dumb as the "make Bunche a fb camp" but right up there. Let's see, let's take a 6'6 330 lb ol and make him a fb. Why doesn't every COACH IN THE COUNTRY try that ingenious plan? Because after two tackles at the knees by the opposing D, your 330 lb fb is now on crutches. That's why blocking rules are in place to protect ol's below the waist. They have nowhere near the flexibility or agility to handle knee high tackles, which would be the preferred method to bring somebody that big down. C'mon man.

Gallo the KAK swallower. Only outdone in his pure idiocy and love of KAK by the Soldy Pig who posts in rhetorical questions with "U" in them.

Ain't that right, Pig?

Just in case you all are confused, Bunche was a backup tackle and guard. He couldn't win a stating job at tackle so he was a filler-in at guard as well. Obviously he's a typical tackle size. He was also obviously better at guard than most of the backup guards so they played him at guard from time to time just to get the best linemen on the field. Make sense? I hope so. It's not rocket science.

102 football players declared early for the NFL this year. All 102 are on Gallos list, right? After all, if Duke Johnson declares early, Gallo says that is a casualty.

Nope, because NONE of the 102 left early from the Canes. Looks like retention by the Canes was better than most schools.

We lost one player, who was a backup, and yet Gallo acts like it is the end of the world, in hopes of ruining conversation on here. Multiple folks have said they are happy for Bunche, getting a chance to start on a UCLA team in dire need of offensive linemen. So, he is not a Golden Casualty, he is a UM graduate that is looking for the best chance to showcase his abilities in his senior year.

gatr troll doesn't fool anyone after they have seen him in action about two or three times.

Miami can't close late?

Stacy Coley stolen from Florida State last February
Tracy Howard yanked away from Florida, then intercepts Driskell in the ultimate "in your face" moment for Muschamp.
Jermaine Grace with Miami late.
Deon Bush closed with Miami late.
Tyriq McCord closed with Miami late.

Looks like the gatr is wrong again...

Why should any kid in his right mind play for a bunch of losers like ag, d'o, and shalalalalala when the Miami NO defense is something like last in universities that have won past national championships???

bunch of whacko miami fans talking players when it should be ag and d'o and shalalalala who are decommitting and going somewhere else so the Canes can get a real coach with a real chance of getting to the big game.

d'o and ag's 3 down linemen NO run defense and zone NO pass defense is guaranteed Miami will never be in the top ten throughout the season.

An absolute EXCELLENT, SAGACIOUS choice by both Malcom and his parents and what not. hUh

And believe it or not, Bunche will see SERIOUS PLAYING time on the synthetic-gridiron come September, 2014. AU CONTRAIRE to what y'all PHONEY BALONEY Cane fan-dom believe!! dUh

Amazing how the IRONY of the Orange nd' Green sort can comeback to confuse y'all Goldie nd' Marky Mark SYCOPHANTS and APOLOGISTS and what not. hUh

Because ex-Cane Buche was one of the remaining Randy Shannon HOLD OVERS and he was probably CRUCIFIED for that faux pas ( SEE lack of playing time! ).

Matter of fact, the VAST MAJORITY of those THIRTY-EIGHT ( 38 ex-Canes ) former Hurricanes which both Goldie nd' Marky Mark RAN OFF/or COERCED into leaving the program, the PAST THREE SEASONS, were recruits of the previous Miami head coach. Bloody go figures'. dUh

Beed I honestly believe Chad will be a Cane, he's throwing up the U everywhere, he reaffirmed his commit the other day, and pretty sure he'll be wearing orange n green.

What a FOOL believes! Nothing more, nothing less.

FWIW... I don't blame Art Kehoe ONE IOTA for Malcom Bunche's lack of serious playing time in 2013.

Simply because I absolutely believe it was a POLITICAL move by that Goldie to keep ex-Hurricane M.B. on the sidelines!

In other words, Thee Carpetbagger PRESSURED Kehoe into not giving Bunche more snaps and what not. Huh

duke johnson on deck to leave early......you watch
Posted by: Jim Gallo | January 20, 2014 at 10:22 AM

Voila... it's a FAIT ACCOMPLI that THE DUKE will depart for the N.F.L. after his junior season. No matter what round he's chosen. Be it a 3rd Round or 4th Round selection.

Just y'all Goldie nd' Marky Mark LAP POODLES wait and see!!

Plain and simple Malcolm is the smart one, why be at the U, when the coach doesn't want to be there, GOLDEN IS PURE TRASH.... PROCESS PROCESS PROCESS...... IT"S NOT ABOUT DA U, IT"S ABOUT AL KEEPING HIS FRIEND A PAYCHECK >>>>>>>> FACT, JUST LIKE JOE PA PROTECTED HIS BUDDY AT ALL COST.
Posted by: Rick | January 20, 2014 at 09:43 PM

Right on loyal, serious Miami, Florida Hurricane fan!!

FWIW... I see Rick hasn't been BLINDED the FOOL'S GOLD Golden light and what not. hUh

Both Thomas and his parents are SMART for saying no way Hose to that pathetic DEFENSE the Hurricanes employ and that INEPT Marky Mark, too.

Chit, he KNOWS that SEVERAL Hurricane defensive player's have REGRESSED since they've been in Coral Gables.
