Golden ends silence, reaffirms commitment to Hurricanes

Hurricanes head football coach Al Golden released a statement Sunday, reaffirming his commitment to the University of Miami:

"There has been much speculation concerning my future at the University of Miami. While I am flattered that our progress at The U during an extremely difficult period of time is recognized, I am also appreciative of just what we have here at UM and I am not a candidate for another position. We are eager to welcome our student athletes back to campus next week and visit with prospective student-athletes and their families beginning January 15."

A Miami football staffer who spoke on condition of anonymity told the Miami Herald in a text that Golden told him Friday evening that any reports about Golden leaving Miami for Penn State were “not true.”

HarrietTubmanCane,

You are right...I am MORE THAN HAPPY to repost the sage words of a man that knows what he speaks:

Tubman do your arms and/or brain hurt reaching so hard to make these dumb connections and half-cocked conspiracies? Al Golden isn't some evil genius. He's a football coach and I'm nearly 99% sure he doesn't have the time or energy to create this shadowy image you constantly paint. Next time you have one of these amazing thoughts, write it down on a piece of paper, crumple up that paper, and shove it directly up your rectum. Your ideas are more useful there.

Take it with a grain if you want to, but if its true he didn't wait till today to tell everybody, just like his first year when Joepa got fired. Just saying

Personally I don't think he was gonna take the job because he wanted to see his job finished here. Like I said before I think he was just obligated to listen to them because heis an Alum of Penn State, and played under Paterno. Just my 2 cents

He pretty much told everybody but the media and his boss who said just yesterday that he "thinks" and "believes" that Golden would stay. The "speculation" was on the ESPN on-screen ticker for 48 hours straight, but Al never said a word to quell it.

I feel just terrible for not crediting the author for the Tubman post below, so, I have decided to keep posting his accurate words in every thread this coming year as my way of an apology:

It's a Cane thing--the haters will never understand:

Associated Press

CORAL GABLES, Fla. -- Miami coach Al Golden said Sunday he is not a candidate for any other job, ending days of silence and speculation about his future with the Hurricanes.

Golden's statement did not specifically mention Penn State, his alma mater, which reportedly targeted him as a top candidate to replace Bill O'Brien as coach. University officials had no other immediate comment, though athletic director Blake James said throughout the process he was confident Golden would remain with the school.

"He's staying," James said Sunday.

Golden is 22-15 in three seasons at Miami, with much of that time coming while the Hurricanes were dealing with an NCAA investigation concerning the actions of a former booster. That saga ended midway through this past season, when Miami finished 9-4 and began luring a recruiting class that is widely expected to be among the top 10 nationally.

"There has been much speculation concerning my future at the University of Miami," Golden said in the statement released by the school. "While I am flattered that our progress at The U during an extremely difficult period of time is recognized, I am also appreciative of just what we have here at UM and I am not a candidate for another position."

Golden is to hold a season-ending news conference Monday.

Former Miami wide receiver Shawn O'Dare, who played for Golden, wrote on Twitter shortly after the announcement: "Commitment-the state or quality of being dedicated to a cause, activity, etc."

Added incoming Miami wide receiver Braxton Berrios, also on Twitter: "It's a canes thing, you guys just wouldn't understand."

Golden was unaware of the investigation when he took the Miami job, often calling what happened in August 2011 -- a few weeks before his first game with the Hurricanes -- "the tsunami."

Nonetheless, he stayed and was rewarded with an extension, one that has him under contract into early 2020.

Through it all, the Hurricanes continued to build. If not for a second straight self-imposed postseason ban, they would have appeared in the 2012 Atlantic Coast Conference championship game. They climbed as high as No. 7 in the AP Top 25 this season after a 7-0 start, the school's highest ranking in nearly eight years.

"We are eager to welcome our student athletes back to campus next week and visit with prospective student-athletes and their families beginning January 15," Golden said.

U don't have anything else to do considering your guaranteed unemployment this year, I support work for those who have been displaced! The post is just the personification of what it means to be "butthurt".

You ill-informed dummy...Golden had the Canes qualified to play for the ACC Championship last year and would have won if not for the school deciding to self-impose. You need to work on your hate.

I know there must be many with mixed emotions; for me, I would have been thrilled with the return of Butch. But with AG's decision, at least our recruit class should remain intact.

Right, Sha-la-la couldn't care less, she is more interested in the follow-up conference next week on ObamaCare.

We can now settle down to a normal routine.

Coach G showed that he could listen, but at the end of the day.....
Like bdeharp's little soap opera..I imagine it was a lot less dramatic, but more in line of a little ride to visit with one of his best bud's JJ.

JJ sat CG down and said "don't you realize that you started something that could lead to bringing back the 'Canes, why throw it away?"
Al listened and thought if I could change around some Coaches, visit in the off season with a few guys that are out of Conference with great programs, learn a thing or two, then Hell yes we can make it happen!!.

JJ smiles and says " Go make it happen son, and Kick some A**"
Al goes back to the Gables, and gets revved about the incoming class, and waht we need to do in order to make things happen!!!.
I will stay with the 'U'
Go 'Canes

this is a sad day for the U fans that understand football. the days of National Championships are gone. Al and his boo Donofrio soft philosophy will keep us mediocrity at best. RIP The U. We are no longer a threat to college football elite.

Canesinsider posted on Friday that Al Golden told the staff he wasn't leaving. Guess we all missed that because of all the beat writers and their "sources."

Now that everything is back to normal, there must be staff changes soon. The DC, LB coach, and DL coach would all be nice to change.

Ron-

It's pointless. Apparently it was all sunshine and rainbows when Butch Davis was coach. Especially that third year..... And the fans really loved him after that 66-13 loss to Syracuse... Don't get me wrong I think Davis was a great coach. But I also happen to think Al Golden is going to be a great coach for us if the fans would just be realistic about the situation he inherited.

I also happened to read that report referenced by Jersey Cane. Yet the people on that stupid Rivals site had "inside info" that Al had his bags packed. Perhaps he was doing the right thing by his alma mater and agreeing to interview and not hurting their chances with other candidates.

Do you think Williams will be the starting QB next year? We didn't see much of him last season. What do you think? Also I'm curious if Duke Johnson comes back healthy. We need fewer 3 and outs on offense.

I think Walford coming back will really help whoever our new QB is. If we get Johnson back healthy plus one of the new backs can pick up some carries I think we can win up to 10 games in the regular season.

"Why does everybody always get it wrong" besides you and Al Golden? Is it that hard to imagine that you're not the most connected, intelligent and informed poster here?

Can someone else be right (ever) besides you? I know this may come as a surprise but you're not the only intelligent football poster on this blog.

Also, could it be that Golden is the one covering his "arse"? It's a possibility right?

And finally, I don't presume to know you so please don't presume to know me. This is only the second time ever posting on this site in years (talking days not frequency) and I'm not someone else that you're so hell bent on discrediting. In other words, "I am who I am and not another poster".

And for the record, I supported Golden when he arrived and was happy and quite excited to hear of the possibility that he was leaving......

Gocanes1,

Were you one of Butch's big supporters after we got absolutely demolished on National TV by Syracuse 66-13 in his "fourth" season as HC at UM?

I bet you called Tad and gave Butch the big thumbs up!!!

Actually I think you can thank the always brilliant reporting at Canesport for that. I joined that thing for about a month a few years back. Comparing it to kindergarten would be kind. Apparently they had Al Golden holding a press conference Sat or Sun announcing his departure. LMAO!!!!

Thank You James for showing that there are other Canes fans out there who have a little bit of sense other than Zook and myself. Thanks for being a standup Cane.

Zook, don't know what's with the name but man an ex Gator name? come on man.

Jersey, even though that's correct it did happen on Friday, Golden's statement came today after MN of the MH did an article on Golden's "silence" despite this "text" to a staffer.

Truth is, what coach doesn't say this before leaving for other jobs but great post.

Hey Zook, your boy was not offered the job at Penn State. That is the only reason that we are still stuck with him. Too bad for us, especially if he keeps his worthless no defense coordinator.

I'm actually excited about next season. We have some good JUCO transfers who can play immediately. I'm worried about Johnson, but I have a feeling Ryan Williams might be OK at QB. I would like to see us recruit one more this year.

We are bringing some good DB's who can probably hit the field next year also and have two very good RB's signed.

I don't get all the "The Sky if Falling" stuff. If Johnson hadn't gone down against FSU I bet we would have gotten at least one more win during the regular season. It really hurt not having him. It just forced our hand offensively and caused too many 3 and outs. That takes it's toll.

FSU might still be too much for us next year, but I don't think anyone else on our schedule is. I guess if Al goes 10-2 or 11-1 in his fourth year people will still find some kind of fault. As the kids say..."Whatever." They do still say that don't they?

I just have to wonder if a lot of the people posting here were actually old enough to remember how bad it was when Davis was here. It was a horrible situation for him and he handled remarkably well. The last couple of years under Erickson were tough. I'm not sure he was really....uh...let's say sober. All that said, I think they made a knockout hire (for UM with what we can pay) with Golden.

These folks are just not giving him enough credit for what he has had to endure with the NCAA.

James I could not agree more with U. Half these morons only look at what they either heard about the 2000 and 2001 teams. They don't want to recall the times he blew 4th quarter leads to Va Tech, the losses to ECU, the Syracuse debacle or the terrible showing at Washington when he let an option QB and a TE beat them. But Butch is the savior of the U. The truth is he was a terrible game day HC and one could say that if it weren't for Ken Dorsey finding Shockey in the endzone late in the fourth qtr of the 2000 game he wouldn't be held in such a high light. I agree without a doubt he built one of the greatest if the not the greatest teams in history in 2000 and 01, but hell he was in his fifth year at the time and when he went into the job at Miami he knew what the NCAA punishment would be, Golden did not. He had to deal with this mess for three years and now it is finally over with. No body knows how good of a coach Golden will be or is but what I do know is he is already better than anything we have had since Butch left.

Butch Davis mentioned in every single post when attempting to draw a parallel between fans...that right fans. Not the two coaches, their stats, coaching styles/acumen, and results. But a comparison between fans at that time and fans now.

Please prove that one fan here who is not a fan of Golden's coaching at UM, is and was a distractor and advocate for Butch Davis being fired back in the 90's (before this forum even existed?

Don't react to clearly bad coaching and the intelligence insulting practice and gall of blaming every loss on the players---because people wanted Davis gone 20 year ago???

I have a really good feeling about Brad Kaaya. I think Olsen might transfer because I think Kaaya will be the better of the two. The kid has the size and just looks sharp. He also was in the Elite 11. Williams might get the nod next year due to experience but I think in the end Kaaya will be the next really good QB at Miami.

I'm still not giving up on changes on the defensive staff. lol Barrow and D'no aren't cutting it.

Davis was and is a bad gameday coach. However I would take him back in a second. In college, there are more important things. Al is the right man to lead the ship but it's important that he gets the right coaches around him. D'nofrio is holding him back.

In fact, Kaaya looks really good in the All American game right now.

James, I tell you one thing between Duke Johnson, the Powell kid, Yearby, and Gus Edwards we are looking pretty good at RB. Then at QB Williams, Olsen, Kaaya, Malik Rosier and don't forget about Gray Crow we are going to have a lot of competition at QB. So our backfield and all of those recievers and TEs are going to be lethal. However the guy I am not sold on is the OC Coley. I loved Jedd Fishe and can see him being a HC someday but Coley never really showed me anything when he was at FSU and sure didn't show me anything this year with Morris. I know losing Duke Johnson had a lot to do with that so in his defense I am going to give him a pass. I really want to see our defense though next year with Muhammad and Thomas and a bunch of young players on the Dline.

Coley didn't impress this year but I'll give him a pass. After Dorsett, I don't think we are too loaded at WR. I know Hurns had great numbers but he's not really a play maker that scares the defense. He is however our most consistent receiver. Losing Dorsett and Duke hurt.

How fun is a stronger Duke and a sophomore Stacey Coley going to be next year? The offense will have a ton to work with. The defense just needs a coaching upgrade to place the new talent coming in.

Please prove that one fan here who is not a fan of Golden's coaching at UM, is and was a distractor and advocate for Butch Davis being fired back in the 90's (before this forum even existed?

Miami fans flew a plane over the OB with a banner that said "fire butch davis." I think that's a little more extreme than some bulletin post so it's fair to state that Miami fans weren't happy with him either.

I'm not sold on a 3/4 defense either but I am going to give Dnofrio a little more time before I cast him out completely as not a good DC. The most important thing that will make a DC look good is talent on the Dline so until he gets some DT's that are his and are quality players I can't really evaluate it from a true standpoint. Now I agree that once he has got some good Dlinemen in there and then it still sucks like it did last year and at times this year, well then that will be a different story. Coley is a beast at WR and Duke and company should be an awesome set of skill players to watch. Look out of WR's coming in this year to make an impact along with Lewis.

That proof enough for ya Tubby?

I agree that there isn't a ton of talent in the Canes front 7. Chick is the only one who came in as a 4*. However, I think there is enough talent to be decent on defense. I think D'nofrio just isn't a good DC and he's had enough time. I also think Barrow is not developing the linebackers. Some changes on defensive staff, more talent coming in, and I think next year will be much better.

Cane sport had it right about Golden. And then Munchak came on the scene. You see Penn State went in another direction. Now the Golden Girls damage control team is trying to put out fires and smooth things over with the fan base. The so called job here he doing will never be finished we will never win any championships here just like in the MAC.But the jobbing he is doing on the administration is priceless. Where is Paul Dee ? We need you! Blake and Donna don't have a clue. When does the NCAA excuses stop. Some fans, some alumni and ex-players really care about this football program. We know it don't take 5 years to compete. Can't say the same about the administration.

It took Butch five years... When does the NCAA excuses stop? THE NCAA INVESTIGATION JUST ENDED! lol We haven't had a recruiting class in three years without it. What are you talking about? lol

CanesInsider and multiple others had Golden on Friday saying he's not leaving. Canesport said that he was announcing to the players Saturday. You know, the same players who aren't even on campus until tomorrow. However in Canespace you trust...

I admit, I was fooled by the beat writers too. To cite Canespace and say they had it right after some of the things they reported this weekend though? lol

ITs probably Gallo with another one of his screen names. He's still living in Playstation world.

Tubby, I'm still here. The weird story you told us about our fictitious daughters listening to music you deem terrible was much like your opinion of rap; terrible. You're using a bunch of words, trying to say something profound but when you type it out, nothing really happens.

The empty can rattles loudest, I guess.

I'm not a fanboy, I see plenty wrong with this program but I'm also realistic and instant gratification doesn't exist in cfb. Stability, continuity and consistency are good things. Glad he stayed, not mad he looked elsewhere, and looking forward to seeing Al close on a top 5 recruiting class.

We need a Defense coach not a friend, coach al. Let him , do what the U needs .Go Canes.

No I am not Gallo and I don't play video games. Do you really believe because of talent issue and the NCAA mes was the sole reason this team lost 4 games last year. Florida State talent wise yes. The other games no.

There is a defensive scheme issue with D'nofrio and there is a talent issue. It's not just one thing. D'nofrio and some other defensive coaches need to go but we also need to keep bringing more talent.

Miami fans flew a plane over the OB with a banner that said "fire butch davis." I think that's a little more extreme than some bulletin post so it's fair to state that Miami fans weren't happy with him either.

Sorry but this doesn't satisfy my request. No one is questions whether there were fans that were critical of Davis back in the day. I asked that the "Butch haters are Golden haters" crowd prove that anyone here is/was one of those Butch distractors.

Umm did you see what Duke did against an almighty SEC team and Manziel? Yeah they lost but they gave them all they wanted, after everybody was saying how A&M was going to blow them out. Va Tech got a win with out us having Duke Johnson who was by far our best offensive weapon plus we fumbled the ball on two special teams plays that gave them a short field so that is why that game was lost. The same Va tech team that gave Alabama a tough game in the opener who needed two special teams returns by 22 to pull away from them. So it's not as simple as U may think.

D'nofrio is holding him back.

Posted by: JaxCane | January 05, 2014 at 09:49 PM

Not true, Golden is not a victim of D'No, he said so himself. He said this defense is his defense--thats not being held back.

Tubby put the pipe down, you are not the riddler. He is not real either.

Lets be clear about what just happened. A current UM coach went job hunting for another COLLEGE job. This wasn't Butch to the pros, this was a man, with our potential recruits in his pocket, who marketed his services with another school for days. He also did it with a school we have a history with. Not acceptable and not cool.

The fact they reviewed his body of work with Temple, and UM, should tell us, and him, that he isn't a good enough coach. Period. There is no secret out there when people look at films and don't see a defense that even Paterno would have put on the field. Paterno loved loyalty but he also demanded competency. If you weren't good enough, no matter how loyal, you didn't play. Al needs to review the past two years tapes of the defense and decide if that was competent. Because neither Penn State or any NFL job you covet (say the Steelers) would want you with your current scheme. The lesson in all of this is that Al learns the price of being a good buddy over being a good coach, and he learns no one will take him serious from here on if he keeps playing the same garbage d. If that happens, all of this was a win for UM.

Posted by: Worst Fans Ever | January 05, 2014 at 10:44 PM

If U been here, why did U begin your post like that? That was a long arse talk, what did she say?

So U believe that those rappers that I named are actually good rappers? Figures lol!
