Perryman's return big boost for Canes defense

Al Golden and Mark D'Onofrio got some much needed good news Friday.

Leading tackler Denzel Perryman is coming back for his senior season.

A family member of Perryman's told me a big reason he wanted to stay at UM was to get his degree. "It's important to his family and Cassie [his girlfriend]," the person said.

“I decided to stay because it is the best decision for me and my family,” Perryman said in a statement released by UM. “Ever since Coach Golden got here, I feel like this program is moving forward and will continue to rise under his direction.

“This coaching staff is dedicated to player development and getting us better. I’ve grown as a player and person each year thanks to them."

Perryman started all 13 games at outside linebacker for the Hurricanes in 2013, leading the team with 108 total tackles and 69 solo stops. He posted six games with 10+ tackles en route to first-team All-ACC honors from ACSMA and the league’s 14 head coaches. He also garnered All-America honorable mention from SI.com.

“Before this season, we hadn’t had a 9-win season in a long time,” Perryman said. “For those of us in my class who had never been to a bowl game because of the sanctions, it was a great feeling and I want to be a part of the next step forward.”

To take the next step forward Perryman is going to need a lot of younger players around him to develop. Miami is losing second-leading tackler and starting middle linebacker Jimmy Gaines to graduation and has received inconsistent play from the rest of its linebackers.

Junior Thurston Armbrister (6 starts, 33 tackles, 2 sacks), sophomore Raphael Kirby (13 games, 10 tackles, 1 sack), sophomore Tyriq McCord (13 games, 13 tackles, 4 sacks, 2 INTs), freshman Alex Figueroa (2 starts, 17 tackles, 1 sack), freshman Jermaine Grace (11 games, 8 tackles) sophomore JaWand Blue (2 games, 1 tackle) are who is returning alongside Perryman in terms of experience at linebacker.

UM also brought in incoming freshman Juwon Young (Albany, Ga.) at linebacker on Thursday.

What's weird is, Gallo told us he was gone. Gallo is never wrong right?

We all know that Gallo lives in a fantasy land. But you must admit, he is terrific at feeding us a GALLON of bulls@%t everyday...kind of like AG!

GKC,
Dunno if you'll miss this if I leave it in last Blog post seection, so forgive me repeating:

Good then,

DZP is closer to the whole situation; even if he is purely staying for selfish long term reasons - so much the better.

Prove us doubters wrong. I don't hate AG, I seriously doubt him.

Aren't coaches supposed to challenge players all the times they aren't performing? I hear that all the time and AGREE.

Let's assume AG has staffers taking the pulse of the fans, as a tiny component of his overall duties.

Feedback may be important or not at all. I side with it being worth consideration, but not crucial.

SO, the SAME goes for fans challenging their coaches. There's nothing wrong with fans challenging coaches to perform when they "aren't."

It's our sacred duty - lolol, k? Thought I'd throw that out there, since we're being self-important blog commentors.

After every big win or championship, I hear AD's, coaches and players thanking their fans for crucial support.

Tough love is oftentimes support.

The difference between "tough love" and hating/trolling is sometimes hard to discern.

Wow, I guess I have daddy issues. huh.

Ok, good talk, good talk.....thanks for the therapy, guys - trololol!

That statement was 100% crafted by Golden. Probably called up perryman and told him to say that because all of it is 100% false. They dont care about player development on defense, they only care about running theit trash scheme.
Every single point perryman said was exactly what golden says ad nauseam.

I've been a fan so long. I go to 2 home games a year. I buy a Jersey every year, tons of hoodies, shirts, decals for my car. I will always be a hurricane fan.
But it is hard to watch the team that you fell in love with when you were a kid abandon everything that made you enamored with them.
I used to watch the aggressive defense, the hard hits, the utilization of south Florida speed and the flash that came with the kids enjoying the football they played.
That's gone now.
Al Golden came here and said he wanted to embrace the tradition of Miami,
But he didn't.
He wanted to come here and completely change the program and tradition to what he thought it should be.
That's why there's so much resistance. It's not organic to where he's coaching or recruiting. The kids are starting to see that.
The U I grew up with is being dismantled.
It's hard to watch.
But it's what we do as fans.

Ollag,
My addled "inside source" tells me:
AG and DNO are really GalloBot and Zook, trolling us all...

I've seen Perryman hit a few guys like a ton of bricks and we need that around here as much as possible. I'm hoping the entire defense gets better at tackling, though, and worry less about the big hit. Get in position, wrap up, drive your legs, and don't let go.

Manny Navarro ✔ @Manny_Navarro
Of the state's Top 100 recruits according to 247Sports
13 are headed to #UM and #FSU.
#UF and #USF have 5 commitments
----
Huh, so, rumors of Miami doing terrible in the state of Florida are false, while the gatrs apparently are competing to beat USF.

Great point canemutiny! I wish we saw more tackling out there. But then again, that's Michael Barrow's job, isn't it?

Glad to see Perryman is back.

Go 'Canes!

BTW beedharphong, no one at the U takes the pulse of the fans. They deal in attendance, sales, and winning football games. No coaches care about what fans THINK.

This guy gets it!!

good for dzp

Tampa,
I think you're right.

Bethel decommited for Texas Tech. Am sorry, but his decommitment is not important. Let call like it is. He 5'8,,,5'8,,,5'8,,,5'8. Who was he going to cover when we play florida state???? WHO?...Look at all of Florida DB commitments for 2014,,they are all 6'1 are taller, and weight in range 180-200 pounds...This is why he didnt switch it to Florida...look at FSU DB commits,,much taller than Bethel...so Bethel,,please head to West Texas, which is about 10 hours away from civilization withi the Texas borders,,,and I bet, he will be unhappy on Day 1. Please GO BETHEL.

Good , in 3 years he must have learned at least half the defensive schemes that "D" is running, which is about double what the rest of the defense knows.

Our defense looks like
-Floyd Mayweather without the quickness, a punching bag
-Swiss Cheese except with more holes
-a pushover you don't have to push
-a fire drill in a blind school
-a dumb girl in a bikini bending over in front of Incognito

Sad times for longtime Cane fans.

it doesn't really matter if he stays or goes..with DOnofrios and Goldens Scheme teams will always get 500+ yards and score at will against our putrid D

Joyner is 5 9".
He's the best corner in the country.
He didn't LIke the scheme, he saw a better opportunity somewhere else.
Why be mad at him?
Can't hate on these kids who want to play a different defense.
It's their future. They've got to do what's best for them.
Playing 15 yards off the ball every play will not help this young man get where he wants to go.

much need good news is putting it mildly.....however goldens casualty list also gets much need good news.....

this also improves with perryman removal....

I'm late to the party, but some posters immediately said this wasn't working.

The change in culture just isn't working here. The bowl game is where this become most apparent to me. We play like a Penn St team and there's programs out there playing like Miami. They are using our style against us.

It's like Tad Foote won in the end.

The administration and the coaches aren't going to bring us back.

Coming back is really a matter of getting the types of kids we used to get.

CanesJunkie,

Exactly right. We've watched as the kids have lost faith in it.
To think that when golden arrived, we had a top 25 defense.
Then 45, then 116, now 90.
These young men have grown up playing bump n run, man, which is the Florida way.
Not because we force this scheme on our young ones, but because they are a natural fit for it with their abilities.
Golden and donofrio don't care about that. They like the scheme they played in as youngsters and refuse to change it.
But this isn't the northeast, this isn't the MAC.
Everyone seems to understand that except them.

Quite frustrating.

Losing Three 4-Stars flips in 5 days to teams that are considered better overall programs with FAR better facilities...

Gaining Zero 4-star flips in months from teams that are considered better overall programs with FAR better facilities ...

But we'll get some unranked and 2-star leftover projects on signing and the lull days that follow to be the foundation of our 2-3 deep depth in the near future.

We're great outta the gate, but have faded in the homestretch yet again. We have gotten some nice top players to commit the last 4 years, but so many use our schollie offers as stepping stones to Top-20 programs.

Why ?

Pinecountycane great posts I agree 100%.

Growing up the Hurricanes were the COOL team. They did things on the field we had never seen before. That's why we all fell in love with them. It was Us Against the World. Man do I miss those those days. It's to bad this administration doesn't feel the same. They are content with 9 wins a yr. If this continues all we will have is our memories of dominating college football.

pinecountycane: You hit the nail on the head; Joyner is smallish too, but one of the best dbs in the country. Talent is talent and if a Kid decides that he doesn't want to be a part of the garbage schemes being installed by D'No, just wish him well and shut the F"#k up and move on. PERIOD.

Just yesterday at this time CB Bethel and RB Powell were both great 4-star players that a key part of Miami's Top-3 class...

This morning, after they both decommitted, they're undersized 165lb. and 170lb. over-rated average players that are afraid to compete in a class that has now plunged out of the Top-10 and still freefalling weeks ahead of signing day with more decomits to follow.

But look on the bright side, U still have Goldie and his BFF for another 7 years to coach up all those 21 outta 27 3-stars according to Scout.com.

Waiting for the day where a recruit flips schools around this time and says something along these lines:

"What was the decisive factor that led you to switch to (X)U from (W)U?"

- Great relationship I've had with Coach Z, here at
(X)U, but really, it was reading some of the comments sections from (W) U's blog site and others, and I was like, Wow, great points, that Coach W is in over his head...

If it doesn't happen this year or next...it'll happen someday soon, right?

PINECOUNTYCANE YOUR OPENING POST IS EXACTLY HOW I FEEL AS WELL. MY GRANDFATHER WAS A FIREFIGHTER FOR THE CITY OF MIAMI IN THE 70'S AND EARLY 80'S UNTIL HE GOT BURNED IN A BAD ARSON FIRE. HE IS THE REASON IM A CANE AND HE WENT TO GAMES IN THAT ERA BECAUSE OF THE BRAND WE PLAYED. I WAS HOPING GOLDEN WAS LEAVING BECAUSE IT SEEMS LIKE ALL THE RECRUITS ARE TOO! WHEN BUTCH SAID HE COME BACK THE OTHER DAY TO THE HERALD I DIDNT CARE IF HE WAS 80. HE WOULD INSTILL THE U WITH WHAT HE LEFT US WITH TO PURSUE HIS PRO CAREER ATTEMPT. I FEEL WITH THIS STAFF NOW WE ARE ONLY A 8-9 WIN TEAM,ITS DISSAPPOINTING BECAUSE WE SHOULD WIN THAT MANY OFF SHEAR TALENT ALONE. IT SUX BUT I WILL WILL ALWAYS SUPPORT THE U, ITS ALL I GREW UP KNOWING.

How many penalties have you seen the opposing teams get for unsportsman like for flashing the U non, Miami is hated by many. Miami can't do those things anymore it cost 15 yards every time. We get penalties after a score celebrating. As far as recruits, let them go, nothing like a player who's there that has second thoughts. I should have went here or there. Moving on through life there are gonna be things we don't like and can't control, like work. All you can do is do your best, everything can't go as you want them, and your way may not be the best way. So if a player doesn't want to come in and try to make things better with whats at hand kick rocks, see how far that takes you in the real world on a real job. How many of you like the scheme on your job or the one calling the plays there. Stop crying and help teach these kids a sense of ownership and responsibility. Not to run away from issues.

Smart choice, Denzel.

Looking forward to a great
senior year for you!

Go Canes!

UM really needs Perryman next year. This is a real boost to next year's team.

Beed, I understand your point of view. I just disagree. Golden and gang will lead us in 2014 whether, you, me or anyone else likes it or not.

The potential negatives from ongoing chirping on recruiting, parents, morale, etc., outweighs any modest chance than anyone on UM coaching staff a) reads this, or b) would act upon it if they did.

So, after all the posts and all the discussion, I'm inclined to rally around the only set of coaches and players that we'll actually have on the field next year.

GKC,
I hear ya, hombre.

Hoping to see some positives after all this blowback.

Gallo

They lied to you kid?

So we should not wait for Tracy Howard and Flowers to transfer?
Let me know, I need someone like you with inside info bro.

Gallo got caught peeping thru a locker room hole with a drill in his hand

Cane 89, Beed and Sunny Dee - glad you all have exposed this coaching administration for what it is: Mediocre at best, riddled with excuses.

Cane 89 thank you for pointing out that Golden was handsomly paid $2.1 million per year TO DO HIS JOB, during the NCAA sanctions. All last week when everyone, including the media, were sticking up for Golden, due to the "NCAA Sanctions", "Players not Maturing", Players not Grasping the System", "It's a Process", "Have to Have Patience", and the best one: "We're Not Yet Where We Want to Be", I was pulling my hair out from the Toxic Kool Aid everyone was drinking (as pushed by Golden and the UM administration).

WQAM's Donno and Guzio actually said, when I called them, that they would be happy with 7 and 8 win seasons until 2020, if they knew Golden would stick around until then tim. WHAT!? This is the kind of mediocrity/socialism that has already started to set in. 7 and 8 wins is a failure at UM. Let me repeat....7 AND 8 WINS IS A FAILURE AT UM! Always has been and always will.

We have the players. We've always had the players and will always have the players. The key is, what are we doing with the players? With the right coaches holding their own on game day, and coaching up the players, we win 10 or more games a year like clockwork. Since Howard got things rolling in 83, that is how it has always been, that is how it is now, and that is how it will always be. Guzio and Donno, never settle for 7 and 8 win seasons, because once you do, five and two win seasons are not far off in the future.

Finally, as a fan base, we cannot give coaches five years to implement their systems. They need to show ample results after three years. If we give four coaches five years to implement their systems, and they fail the way Coker, Shannon, and now Golden have failed, then we're staring at 20 years of lethargy. The next man up attitude needs to be just as adherent with coaching and coaching staffs, the same way it is with players. Also, a failed/fired Head Coach as Randy shouldn't mean he has to be dismissed from the program. The guy is actually one of the best Defensive Coordinators in the country and should have been offered to stay on to coach the defense (if he chose to and had the humility to do so). It's the Old Steinbrenner/Yankee form of front office administration, especially since Randy is a member of the Cane family. Gene Michael was a terrible Manager for the Yankees two times, but whenever fired, he was immediately put back into the front office to build up personnel, which he is responsible for the Yankees' rise in the 90's.

In Golden's case year three should have shown marked improvement on defense, and participating in the ACC Championship game. People like Meyer, Saban and Petrino got their teams to BCS Bowl games in year three and on more than once occassion at separate coaching stops. I will give Golden a pass on that one, since we would have faced FSU in the ACC Championship, but we should have at least gotten to the game and shown improvement on defense. We didn't, so he now he needs to be on the hot seat and held accountable. People like Donno and Guzio may not like that coaches use the UM as a stepping stone job, but the UM certainly cannot become a "rest on your laurels job", based upon mediocrity.

Lamarcus Joyner didn't like the scheme? What scheme are you talking about? It just seems some people think that they can lie to prove their dislike for the current scheme.

Look, Joyner can go wherever he wanted, but it wasn't due to the scheme that is currently being run. He went to FSU in 2010 when Coach RS was our HC.

People we all hate the defense, we're all pissed Golden is not getting rid of this defense, but fact is he is staying - apparently, and so is his buddy.

The man is not blind, he saw what he saw, let's hope he makes the necessary adjustments so we don't go through another year of getting gashed for 500+ yards a game.

If those 2 decommitts drop us out of the top 10, how good could the rest of the recruits be? Doesn't seem right to fall that much. AG is a pretty good closer, so without the cloud of the ncaa investigation, these final weeks should be interesting.

Football,

Lol. Hahaha. That was in response to al post about bethel being short.
I said Joyner was short and that bethel is on record as saying he didn't want to play in that scheme, so you can't hate on the kid for leaving.

/////////////////////////////

There is only one adjustment that can be made, bring in somebody who knows defense. moron goldie played offense in college right, clown 500 played on defense, but somehow moron goldie taught clown 500 this sissy defensive scheme, so the only solution is to bring in a real d-co who has a scheme that none of the penn disgrace nimrods know how to run.

Only the first sentence of the post had to do with Joyner.

Going to be real interesting watching our linebackers come next year, while jimmy gained wasn't the best, he was servicable, the moron/s who got rid of gionni paul & eddie johnson, better hope grace, kirby and blue have developed, the whole 4.8 linebacking squad will be in full effect come next year lumbering around.

Lol. You can tell how high the demand was for Eddie Johnson as he plummeted to Hinds Community College in east BumFuch, Mississippi. No one wants the bad apples these days, even when they are talented.

All the canes woes solved by you guys, very funny. Jimbo fisher been at FSU how long. How long has it been sie he replaced Bobby. And this year was there year. They got smashed by NCSU last year with this sme team minus Winston, but with a more than capable qb. Jimbo did't come right in an start winning the sucked just like we us. Now subtract all the NCAA garbage and coaching changes at UM and see if you can come up with better teams the past 12 years. If you can't your just a sore losser. We all hate the defense but truth is FSU defense wasn't all that good the past 6 or 7 years, and they really had the better players. It just finally came together. It took time. Yeah were losing games we should when, and giving up 500+ yards, but it gonna take time, and this is year one from under the cloud and actually the first year of rebuild.

Nigel Betherl said real college atmosphere, Sold out Games. All you cry babies go to the games to we can get the recruits you want. And so Mr. Bethel can feed his bravado.

Lol! Perception over reality huh? Laugh at EJ about how he is perceived over the substance of his play (productivity)...figures. EJ balled out on the field of play at UM, can't dispute that. U are a pure hater to the bone grizzle mountain cane.

Like your screenname gatorkillercane. We killed them for the last time and gallo and friends cannot accept it. Recruiti.g is recruiting. There is a month to go and Golden will close strong. Hopefully someone over Golden Fires donofrio right after signing day and has a great replacement in place to scoop up some unsigned kids . Dont think it will happen but hoping....

I would respectfully disagree. I think FSU has had fabulous defenses the last 6-7 years. It's their offense that was usually in question.
Plus during the periods where fsu couldn't field a complete team they were still running an aggressive scheme to highlight their players talents.
That's all we're saying. Just give the kids a chance to make a play.
Put em near the line of scrimmage, give em a shot to disrupt the offense.

When over a hundred schools weighed Johnson's on field performance against his off field performance, they all passed.

But Big Ego "if you don't like my posts you aren't a real canes fan" Tubby, knows better.

Where your facts to support that over 100 schools weighed his on-field performance against his off-field performance, and they all passed. Please support this assertion?

Plus I was talking to mountaincane LOL!
