Canes OT recruit Reilly Gibbons flips to Stanford

If you looked at the picture on his Twitter account before Saturday it sure looked like Reilly Gibbons couldn't wait to become a Hurricane.

Reilly Gibbons' old Twitter photoBut apparently those plans changed. According to Scout.com National Recruiting analyst Jamie Newberg, Gibbons took an official visit to Stanford this weekend and has flipped his commitment to the Cardinal.

Listed at 6-6, 292-pounds and rated a three-star recruit by 247Sports.com, Gibbons had been committed to UM since April.

Corey Long, editor-in-chief of Fuel Recruiting and based out of the St. Petersburg area, was stunned to hear the news. He knows Gibbons and his family well and thought for sure he was headed to Miami. Ultimately, though, Long believes Gibbons -- a very strong student when it comes to academics -- was probably persuaded by Stanford's law school program.

"The crazy thing is if he didn’t go to private school he probably would have enrolled at UM in January," Long said. "Losing an offensive tackle is one you never want to lose, you'd prefer a guard or center if you had to lose one. But at the same time they can replace him next year. At the end of the day I don’t think it’s going to break their class. If he played defensive tackle that would have been a bigger loss. But offensive tackle, I think they’re all right."

UM is returning three starters and four other experienced offensive linemen and already has two incoming Americans Kc McDermott and Trevor Darling -- enrolled. Under-Armour All-American center Nick Linder of St. Thomas Aquinas is UM's third offensive lineman commitment. His older brother Brandon Linder started more than 40 games in his career for UM.

I think 'Bama has won four titles in the last 31 years.

ALL teams have decoms, Bama lost another, FSU as well, the Gators have lost 3 or 4,

the difference between u and the above mentioned 3 teams ...

6 Championships the last 7 years ...

u , 1 in the last 22 years.

that's why ...

The difference is you make yourself look even DUMBER with each post. The point to my post has NOTHING to do with titles, why even mention that? Ok VT, UNC, GT ALL have lost recruits DA, you try to make it look as though ONLY Miami loses recruits and that it's a bigger deal because it's Miami. Grow up and come back with something that holds more weight.

This is one of those the kid took a look at the whole coaching staff, particularly 'Goldy. he looked at how UM won and lost last year.

I can't say I blame him for changing his mind. This coaching staff is just overrated. But I don't put Kehoe in the overrated group. That's because Kehoe gets his marching orders from 'Goldy.

Some people just cant handle the facts, one of the worst coaching staffs if not the worst in the history of the UUUUUUUU.FACTS

Well you have a couple choices, either realize we're getting a great recruiting class coming in, and hopefully they can not only add much needed depth, and in some areas IMMEDIATE help, and we can get better, or you can hit the road and back another team. I mean unless you enjoy just plain beetching, why even bother backing the team?

Ricki aka Rick is just paid to plant negatives. Just ignore. Like his Kayaa not coming here insider info.

Hey Rick,

If you sent that tweet from Duke to 3 people within the U, that means you had to take a screen shot of it; please do share.....

I for one am throwing the BS flag on that one.

BburgCane.. he didn't say that Duke sent the tweet. He said that in Jon Drummond's tweet that Duke and told TV not to come to Miami.

I have seen the screen shot myself but it doesn't means it's true but my gut tells me that it is. Jon Drummond is the Defensive Coordinator at TV's high school and he's been a big part of the 7 on 7 scene in So. Florida so he knows Duke and Tracy Howard.

A Top 10 class that will NEVER see the top 10, unless they play them. This program is done. The midget Shalala killed the "U". Over and done

there's the link to Jon Drummond's tweets..

Nobody here is trashing stanford- of course one of the best academic institutions in the world

Nobody did that but one moron decided to comapre stanford and palo alto to Miami.

The schools aside,

Palo alto is pretty, but who here would rather live through a 7.o earthqualke versus a hurricane? Hint: earthquakes give you no warning.

Palo alto women? Liberal hippy chicks who dont shave their pits? Come on- plus unless youre into asian girls, the studnet body of stanford is like 90% asian.

Compared to the gorgeoyus sun drnechjed studnets of Miami? You ever walked by the pool area?

serious? Palo alto? bunch of latte sipping dweebs.
Its like 40 degrees there right now.

Im walking around in shorts here in Miami./

No comparison.

Alumni? Tiger woods. Enough said. Gimme a break.

Stanford is a nice school. Its a great academic institution. UM they will never be. The canes they cannot be. ever. ever. Im sorry. If yoiu were talking about USC, I'd shut up but youhave to stfu

wow one post with no mention of Shannon.

I think 100% Duke and Howard said it, what really seals it with me, is Valentine just mentioned to the Herald that Cane recruits did not show him no love when he visited...... I AM SOLD IT HAPPENED

Rick is a paid speculator.....

I wish I was a paid spectator, I would be making millions coming up with some of this stuff, but guess what.... EVERYTHING I POST I HAVE FACTS AND SEEN PROOF, what really pisses me off is the Herald people seen it and did nothing...... NOT EVEN ASK A QUESTION, TALK ABOUT LAZY

Who cares if it was said or not, Duke needs to focus on REHAB and T. Howard needs to bulk up and WANT to TACKLE and be a football player not just a cover guy... These guys strap it up with The U and chose to play here and I just don't believe these guys would pass the wire like that. I am from the old school and if u have to get on bended knee to get a kid to play here..."Valentine" then I say, "If u want to go else where...LSU and play for that Buster Les Miles than go ahead and jet!"... Love to have u bring this thing back... W/NSD on Wednesday hope to see us close w/some surprises and keep what we already have.

For those of you reiterating "top 10 class", the only reason it's top 10 is because of the quantity of recruits committed, not necessarily because of quality of recruits. Rivals, for instance, ranks this class #11 but the average recruit rating is 3.38, which is lower than every program ahead of it. Looking at those programs ranked behind UM, the following have higher average recruit ratings:

#12 Clemson - 3.47
#16 Stanford - 3.42
#18 UCLA - 3.59
#23 South Carolina - 3.39
#29 Michigan - 3.44
#34 USC - 3.53

In terms of quality, UM should be ranked 17th, not 11th. Not a bad class for sure. But hard to win national championships ranked that low UNLESS:

1) Golden is an outstanding talent evaluator and sees things in kids that the rating services don't (UNPROVEN)
2) Golden gets lucky (UNLIKELY)
3) Golden coaches up lesser talent (UNPROVEN)

By your reasoning this class just got better by Gibbon's de-commit, being a 3-star, correct??

Sounds like rick is from tallahassee

# of 4 and 5 star recruits:
Clemson 8
Stanford 8
USC 8
UCLA 10
SC 7
Michigan 7

Miami 9

Sorry, bad argument.

Ricki's "evidence" included inside information that Kayaa wasn't coming here.

Hard not to believe a guy who writes things like "The Herald people seen it"

I don't think he's a paid trouble maker. What greater fool would pay that moron?

The reason I said the Herald people, CUZ THEY FEAKING SUCK, the normal names I call them wouldn't of been nice.... LMAO....they suck, I mean a story like that would have blow the Al Golden lovers in to a frenzy.... watch the video of Golden after the PSU mess, they could have ate him up, but they took it easy on their baby, if I was there asking Golden questions, I would have asked why are U cherry picking stats saying the team had more sacks this year ( which is true )ONLY CUZ THEY PLAYED SAVANNA ST, once they got into conference play the sacks stopped, AND ONCE AGAIN THEY WERE DEAD LAST IN THE ACC IN SACKS, AND THIS YR SCHEDULE WAS ONE OF THE EASIEST SCHEDULE IN PROGRAMS HISTORY, THEN THOSE MAGIC WORDS TO PROTECT HIS BEST FRIEND..... THE D IS TRENDING UP.... ROFLMFAO, Cane fans have made shirts with that saying.... THE D IS TRENDING UP...... IN THE HISTORY OF FOOTBALL, I HAVE NEVER HEARD A TEAM THAT IS ALMOST LAST IN EVERY SINGLE CATEGORY OF THE ACC IN DEFENSE, FOR 3 YRS STRAIGHT..... IS TRENDING UP.... JUST THINK HOW BAD THEY REALLY ARE (MORE SACKS) AND THEY ARE STILL LAST..... OMG.... COME ON GOLDEN LOVERS..... BRING IT.... GOLDEN USED MORRIS ANKLE INJURY ALL YEAR AS A EXCUSE, FOR HIM PERFORMING BAD, WHAT HAPPENED IN THE BOWL GAME WITH HIM HEALTHY...... IT SHOWED HOW HORRIBLE THE COACHING STAFF HAS BEEN WITH MORRIS... WHY NOT LET MORRIS SIT AND GET HEALTHY WHEN WE PLAYED THE CUPCAKES, I MEAN THEIR WAS THE PERFECT CHANCE, TO GET A BACK UP QB SOME STARTING TIME, BUT AL LET MORRIS RUN AROUND ON ONE LEG (WHY) SO HE COULD HAVE THAT AS A EXCUSE FOR THE POOR PISS COACHING JOB..... FACT

A great coach would have been starting a back up QB to give him some playing time, and make the QB depth chart stronger..... HAD TO HIDE THE FACT, THAT MORRIS GOT WORSE.....

Another one of Goldens great coaching moves, he hired Mario, a month later he went to Bama, AL TURNED AROUND AND HIRED COLEY WITH IN A WEEK, AND NEVER INTERVIEWED ANYONE ELSE, AND COLEY HAD NEVER RAN A OFFENSE, COLEY CAME FROM FSU, WHERE JIMBO RAN THE OFFENSE.... DOES IT LOOK LIKE THEY MISS COLEY ANY..... BUT HE IS A GREAT RECRUITER.....WE WERE RANKED 100 IN THE NATION THIS YEAR IN..... TIME OF POSSESSION....... AND WE HAD ONE OF THE EASIEST SCHEDULE IN THE PROGRAMS HISTORY.... EVERYTHING IS TRENDING UP..... BLAH BLAH BLAH..... WAIT TILL HE BLAMES SABASTIAN

The person that said why am I up late, think about it and see if u can figure it out..... U ON THE CLOCK, JUST LIKE AL....

The recruiting process is completely flawed.

A kid gives his "word" i.e. he commits, i.e. he pledges himself to a school. Butthat no longer carries any weight. It no longer has any meaning. These kids will see that later in life, their words must mean something and oh, believe me they will! But to "commit" to a program, and then last second prostitute yourself to another, because the second prorgram has prettier locker rooms or the coaches promised you something the other schools didnt or because they offered you money (SEC), or early playing time, or bad mouthed the other school you previously committed to is flat out wrong on so many levels.

Young athletes and their families should be MANDATED to hold their "commitments" or promises to schools until a certain period of mutual evaluation has passed. Then, like it or not, a kids verbal commitment is a signed and sealed contract. Schools should not be allowed to offer kids anything until a certain period and kids should not be made to verbally accept anything- once a certain period after visits, ect ha passed- then kids can sign and thats that- do away with that whole NSD garbage of showmanship and self promoting ceremonies. Its become a circus. And another thing- Someone ought to go back and see how every single 3, 4 and 5 star player fared in college after 4 years and determine a new grade based on their play and performance. Then re-calculate rankings.

I bet the 2009 #1,2 Miami class was really a #10-11. or worse.

Ricks workin the night shift up in tallahassee

Al has got to win now. No one will accept his NCAA excuses anymore and he has got to finish in the top 15 this year. Anything less and its time to start evaluating Al or maybe evaluating Butch Davis....again. The man can coach and wants to be here.

" coming up with some of this stuff" rick? Dont blame the herald. If your speculations were true ,someone else would have done a story on it. Coming up with stuff is what U do. Now get back to the lot and wrangle the shopping carts...customers are waiting.
If U look back, muschamp had less firstrounders than golden in goldens lat year at temple. Muschamp is a far worse coach. We are lucky not to have him here. Al hasnt fallen to a div ll school or had players block each other in actual televised games. It could be alot worse.

It would be a good approach, if Brendon Carroll asked his father to visit the U staff and provide insight on a better defensive scheme with the existing players. Unless this Kaaya kid is the next pro-style elite QB, I still say the dual-threat QB helps move the chains when the pass is not there. The dual-threat QB requires less coaching; whereby, the pro-style needs a QB coach on staff. Just my opionion as a former QB. To move forward on offense with all the returning skills players, the QB must be able to make quick and precise decisions. If we are going to stay with the pro-style system, it would be best to have a QB coach (Walsh or Dorsey) on staff.

As for coach Golden, let's all respect him as a man and support his decision as the leader. The President and AD must establish the standard concerning his production, because they are his employer/boss...not us. New Year, let's move forward!

Ricki doesn't even know your messing with her when she notes "The Herald seen it". Probably a gator or nole English major.

I don't think he's a paid trouble maker. What greater fool would pay that moron?

Posted by: GatorKillerCane | February 03, 2014 at 12:15 AM
Maybe the same morons paying a .500 coach 2 million dollars.

dummy is what you are....ufelons and fsu are the only ones that would pay rick. Muschump was a .333 coach last season and needs all the help he can get. Has to be a gator. Noone else would pay someone with no facts, all he has is "stuff he came up with"(his words).

how many heisman trophy does the U has.

Who's paying the .500 coach at Miami? Not only paying him but also extended his contract. LMAO
For what? "He got us through the NCAA mess" what did he do? He never spoke to investigators did he? Remember he always said this was something that happen before he got here. Other then repeating "I'm not going to comment on the four letter word", what exactly did Al Folden do?

Worst defense in school history
last in the ACC
last in the ACC
blown out by every half-way decent team he faced
I can continue but you all know the story.

For those who forget what a UM national championship quality team looks like, let's look back at the starting lineup for the 1986 Canes (NFL draft round/pick):

Offense:
QB - Vinny Testaverde (1/1)
FB - Alonzo Highsmith (1/3)
RB - Warren Williams (6/155)
WR - Brian Blades ((2/49)
WR - Michael Irvin (1/11)
TE - Charles Henry (undrafted)
OT - Mike Sullivan (6/153)
OG - John O'Neil (undrafted)
C - Greg Rakoczy (2/32)
OG - Scott Provin (undrafted)
OT - Matt Patchan (3/64)

Defense:
DE - Bill Hawkins (1/21)
DT - Jerome Brown (1/9)
DT - Dan Sileo (3/59 supplemental)
DE - Daniel Stubbs (2/33)
OLB - Rod Carter (undrafted)
MLB - George Mira Jr. (12/331)
OLB - Winston Moss (2/50)
CB - Tolbert Bain (undrafted)
FS - Selwyn Brown (undrafted)
SS - Bennie Blades (1/3)
CB - Donald Ellis (undrafted)

So, let's recap:
22 starters, 15 NFL draft picks, 12 drafted in first 3 rounds. Probably the greatest team that didn't win the national championship. 5 interceptions by Testaverde sunk that team against Penn State. Kosar, Walsh and probably Dorsey would have won that game.

Ahhh, the good old days...

The U has 2 heisman trophy winners.

Whats your point?

The Heisman is a purely political trophy. Doug Fluties didnt deserve to win it, neither did Carson Palmer. R U kidding?

Point: The program isn't close to being what it was back then.

never in the history of UM has so many left....golden has lost more in 2 years that the whole program has lost since the 70's...

more to come....2014 TMZ

The only casualty to be seen is the train wreck in Gallo's pea brain.

Gallo you are such an idiot ! Some of those guys graduated , some of them took better jobs , some of them were just recruits and never ours . So what does that list mean? Just like you it means absolutely nothing . Go Canes

I know... what moron puts a guy kicked out of school for raping a female student on Golden's casualty list? Not to mention guys who just didn't qualify academically or suffered a career ending back injury but was allowed to stay on scholarship to finish his degree (Preston Dewey). Also, let's not forget the baseball player who broke Arod's high school home run record, who suffered yet another shoulder injury and was moved from 3B to 1B because of his shoulder but since he can't throw the ball like he could before the injury and has no shot of being an effective QB then that's Golden's fault.

you know what's Golden's fault? The defense and that should be Golden's casualty list. Not guys who choose other schools or get arrested for rape, drugs, or stealing laptops.

"A Top 10 class that will NEVER see the top 10, unless they play them"

What a great line.

I think Alverage is doing a fantastic job just by getting 3 or 4 kids to sign up and play defense when it is really efense and clueless Onofrio runs the show.
I mean, immediate playing time, nice weather, topless SoBe girls that has to be the selling point. What else is there? And do not bring up academics, the top kids are going to the NFL not the corporate world.

not one of those guys left because of graduation....good try....everyone was either a verbal UM commit or a signed commit.....they all left

what is means is that this staff is weak and out of their league....it show tremendous instability within the program.....its chaotic

its all golden fault....his own words...."he takes responsibility".....he just lost a 6'6" 292 OT....

in 1 year alone golden lost 24....that's crazy....he is so weak its pathetic...

its a boat with a big hole in it....so many defections...its unhealthy...

your a loser just like he and dnofrio are....with your unwavering support for guy that has made UM the joke of all of NCAA.....

temple didn't want dnofrio and PSU didn't want golden...what does that tell you....both are losers when your own "people" don't want you....why don't go follow both of those back to the MAC conference when you and the rest belong.....

It would be a good approach, if Brendon Carroll asked his father to visit the U staff and provide insight on a better defensive scheme with the existing players.
///////////////////////////////

Since when do we need a coach from usc/seattle to come here to Miami to tell us how to win a championship when we already got 5. We don't need any outsiders to try and come in and tell us anything, the blueprints are already all around those imbeciles, i got to much pride to go that route.

I agree 100% Golden belongs in the Mac.... They may not even want him, Al is loaded with recruits all around him, and when U fail at Miami U ARE DONE...

Hey uh, Rick and Gallo [missed ya buddy],

We do have AG for another 2 years, without the NCAA, without Randy's kids; you know a football season to play...

I think you may be more right than not, about AG's ability to do anything, but guess what!?

We shall see.

Your teeth gnashing at this point in the off-season and your crying about us not securing every top recruit in the nation is pitiful.

If we did secure every single top player, you two would cry about that too.

I am happy we got as much talent as we did, given how badly we finished the year.

We have a tougher schedule this year - don't put Ark. St. in the W column just yet...

For as many problems we have in obvious areas, we have as many opportunities to improve with pieces in place.

No the loser is you, Gallo. Problem is you dont know how much of a loser U are. Your non sensicalposts are justthat- nonsnesical. Distorted stats and pseudofacts are not stats and facts.

First of all, we all know Golden has to produce. Problem is idiots like youand Calvin have been bad mouthing Golden since day one- your agenda is transparent.Always has been. Nobody really lends any credence to your garbage. At some point you may need to realize that. Or maybe not, but who cares.

Golden must win more games. So far he is up on Shannon, both in record and in recruiting. Certainly if he shows no progress a change must be made. Difference between the loyal, rational, non racist fan and you, Calvin, HBT,Cool cat,cane72 and other idiots here, is that we understand what Miami has gone through since Coker left. We understand the horrendous job in recruiting Shannon did.. We undesratnd that Shannon, despite beingan alumn, decimated recruiting, alienated localhigh schools, and played preferences. His politics were abhorrent. Furthermore, Shannon was present when Sh7tiro did his thing- that showed a lack of involvement. What coach would not have banned that pos from any contact with players????

So what Golden had to do from day one was re-build this program from scratch.period. If you are too stupid to understand that, then you dontbelong insouth fl. Go to tallahassee or Gainesville. Golden had NOTHING To work with. Players were either lazy, or suspended bc of the NCAA mess, or entitled, or criminals, or punka55es. Some left early when they could have contributed significantly- other just plain wiffed- eg Ramon Buchanan. Others left early mistakenly- eg Forston. He was left with nothing- proof was that first game against maryland, wherein if we had half the players that were suspended, we would have won. That team was decimated form the start, so 2011 was a wash, yet he finished 7-6. Then in 2012, he had teh looming nCAA mess circling like vultures yet he was able to put a very very decent recruiting class, and Jedd Fisch actually improved Morris to thepoint that he was being looked at as a first rounder!!! IMAGINE THAT! But the true nature of the team got the best of us- manyof thesekids were immature, and could not respond to the hard work and dedicationnecessary to rebuild this program. Yet he finisghed his SECOND YEAR. THINK ABOUT THAT 2ND YEAR! AT MIAMI 6-6 AND WITH THE OPPORTUNITY TO PLAY INTHE ACC CH! And finally last season (HIS third) he finishes 9-4. L:ack of depth prevented Miami from doing better. Yeah, somepoor coaching decisions. But This team as a whole choked against Va tech- not just the coaches. Duke was different. Duke without Duke Johnson was tough to win away. This very well coached Duke team nearly beat TAMU at a neutral site. Gimme a break if you all dont get that!

These are not excuses. They are simple facts. Facts which youall who hated Golden fromday one care not to even consider. You all call youorselves cane fans. But the program was nearly destroyed between Coker and Shannon. Its only now that we are starting to recruit Dade-Broward aggressively again. So we need to chill and let this work itself out. No- I dont think Golden is the second coming of Vince Lombardi, but UM;s budget doesnt allow us to hire a 4 mill a yr coach. Notre Dame just announced thatthey willput $400 mill into RENOVATIONS of their sht hole. You think Miami can afford 400 mil? ha ha ha ha ha

Golden may also need to reconsider his loyalty to Donofrio, but again, let me say it again- you cant make pig sh&t smell like roses no matter how youdress it up. Miami's defense roster was not equipped to be dominant. Our D line is weak. Our DBS slow. But it appears that we are getting there with solid recruiting so we need tobe patient.

believe me- many of us will know whenits time to make a move in another direction. Golden needs time. And I for one appreciate what he has done so far- for what it is.

Valentine is concerned about the pressure that he is going to receive at UM. No one is expecting him to be the savior of the program. He probably won't even start. However, he will get plenty of playing time and gain valuable experience and eventually develop into that Bad MOFO that we need in the interior line. The U is the ideal place for him to get started in what could be a great carrier.
.

Sec is overrated and top heavy,

I noticed you have effectively supported Golden, which I don't have a problem. However, to compare Shannon and Golden is not a good example. Coker did not leave Shannon with an elite roster too. Shannon had to clean up the character of his inherited players, and ensured they attend classes. Jacory was not ready coming out of HS, but he was the only option due to 3 QBs leaving the program. Shannon hired offensive coordinators and trusted them to develop Jacory. Shannon did not allow his professional relationship to impact the future of the team. It's amazing how everyone blames Shannon, but not his coordinators. On the other hand, Golden gets a free pass, because everyone is blaming the DC.
I am not saying Shannon is better than Golden, because they were exposed to two different situations. Shannon did not have the experience players in key positions, and Golden did not have depth at key positions. The former OC was probably the best of the assitants over the past 6 or more years...in my opinion.

This is Golden's team, and let's all support him and the players toward a successful 2014.
