« UM Hurricanes football coach Al Golden releases first spring depth chart -- just in time for spring game | Main | UM quarterback Ryan Williams undergoes 90-minute ACL surgery. Here's what you need to know for now. »

First day in the limelight for UM Hurricanes quarterbacks Kevin Olsen and Gray Crow

With spring practice winding down in a hurry, quarterbacks Kevin Olsen and Gray Crow took center stage Tuesday at Greentree Field, as fifth-year senior teammate Ryan Williams prepared for Wednesday's surgery to repair his torn ACL -- among other injuries to his right knee.

Practice was so spirited and intense that tight end Standish Dobard and defensive back Hugo Delapenha got into a brawl that became a massive pileup -- but just for a few seconds before coaches broke it up. Al Golden ended the practice after that, and said he was pleased with the day.

"There was a really good quarterback competition today and that will continue through the spring game, and then obviousy we'll add two more guys to that mix before Ryan comes back. But as soon as Ryan gets through this initial recovery phase and transitions into rehab, he'll be around, he'll be leading. I promise he will.''

Golden said "the whole day'' was what coaches were looking for. "The whole day was really crisp. I ended up cutting 20 minutes from it. It was fast. It was up temp. I thought Friday was our best day and this day was better than Friday.''

Golden said Crow "performed his best without question and Kevin did an excellent job, too. That was a good start for those two guys and I think the team rallied around them today.

"Kevin right now is creating really well. In other words he's stepping up in the pocket and keeping his eyes down the field and finding his second and third receivers, which is really good. He was unflappable the other night.

"Gray, today, you could see he's got a strong arm. We got him on the move a little bit more, so play action, move the pocket with him and I thought he threw some really good balls today.''

**********************************************************************

Incoming freshmen quarterbacks Brad Kaaya of West Hills Chaminade High in California and Malik Rosier of Mobile, Alabama's Faith Academy, will arrive on campus in five weeks, Golden said. They're already studying the playbook.

UM offensive coordinator James Coley said the best quarterback, regardless of age, will win the starting job. "They're two smart kids that are really studying the books,'' he said. "There are no rules on starting true freshmen. So, if they come in here and beat out the guys that are here right now and they're the best player I wouldn't be hesitant because the best player has got to play.''

Coley said Olsen needs to improve on "the process.'' Though he said he understands the game well, he needs to communicate better with the offense during plays. "OK, I know you now football,'' Coley said, "but it's very important you point this guy out during this play because the left tackle needs to know that information or don't forget to give a signal to the receiver when you see this certain coverage because just because you know it doesn't mean he knows it.''

********************************************************************************

KEVIN OLSEN: "Being the guy is why I came here to Miami. It's a shame that this is how I got to be, maybe, 'the guy,' or whatever. I'm going to embrace the break I got. It's unfortunate for Ryan. I feel awful.

"When [Ryan] told me [about his injury] I was so sad for him. I'm going to be there for him for whatever he needs from me. And I know he'll be there for me while I'm getting ready to be the guy.''

He said he wasn't nervous about the opportunity. "I probably shouldn't be here if I was nervous. I didn't come here to be the backup. I didn't come here to sit behind people the whole time. This year Ryan was going to be the starter and I was going to be there to be in the backup role. Sometimes in football people get tough breaks. We've got to help him move on and we've also got to move on as an offense and as a team in general.''

GRAY CROW: "Normally this spring I haven't really gotten a lot of reps so I've had to take advantage of Ryan and Kevin, what they see in their mistakes and learn from them and take a lot of mental reps. But I feel like what I've done so far the past couple weeks has really prepared me for today."

Crow said he normally gets between five and 10 snaps a practice, but Tuesday he got "30 to 40.''

"Playing quarterback you're always one play away so you always have to be ready and prepare yourself like you're going to get in there.''

*******************************************************************************************

Running backs Duke Johnson and true freshman Joe Yearby, both rehabilitating from injuries, returned to practice in yellow (limited) jerseys for the first time this spring. "Number one, I just expressed our gratitude from everybody in our organization because that took a lot of work,'' Golden said. "For them to be out there where they are right now took a lot of work, took a lot of individual time.

"Clearly Randy [Duke] took Joe under his wing and brought Joe along. After what I saw today, I have no doubt that if we had another two weeks of practice they would be back. So that issue is resolved. They'll do a little bit more Thursday, get a little run in the stadium without any contact and then be ready to transition to full go.''

**************************************************************************************************

Tight end Jake O'Donnell, who sustained an undisclosed injury in the scrimmage and had to have an MRI, has results that "are coming back negative, so it's just going to be time with him,'' Golden said. "He's had an excellent spring and he's got a chance to be 260 by training camp, which is good. It's unfortunate he couldn't finish [spring], but 12 really good practices for Jake.''

 *******************************************************************************

Black first-team jerseys for defensive players Tuesday: linebackers Jermaine Grace, Raphael Kirby, Denzel Perryman, Alex Figueroa; safety Dallas Crawford, defensive tackle Earl Moore.

Orange first-team jerseys for offensive players: running back Gus Edwards, guard Jon Feliciano, tackle Taylor Gadbois, tight end Standish Dobard, receiver Stacy Coley, receiver Malcolm Lewis, tackle Ereck Flowers and kicker Matt Goudis.

*********************************************************************************

Canesport.com reported that UF punter Justin Vogel of Tampa "is in the final process of transferring to MIami.'' He will be a redshirt sophomore and able to play immediately, according to his high school coach, because he'll be a walk on.

He never punted at UF.

"Miami's coaches said there's an open spot and they're looking for someone to come in and play right away,'' Vogel told Canesport.com. "They said there's no punters there right now, that they were going to have to try to use their field goal kicker [Goudis] to do punting...They're allotting a scholarship for a punter for next year, so if I'm good this year they'll just give it to me instead of giving it to someone else.''

Defensive tackle Olsen Pierre (concussion) returned to practice Tuesday and was not limited.

Jameis Winston was a redshirt freshman, and look what he did. I'm not saying Olsen will do the same, but if he manage the game where it doesn't fall on him to win every game. He will do just fine. We have the players. I was looking the other day to all the highlight we had from last year, and most of them if not all of them were players that Golden recruited. We need our TE to step up. We don't have that person to go to beside Duke. Stacy Coley is coming around, but we need a Shockey kind of guy. The other thing is our defense which is a big one. Time will only tell...

Lol. The punter is gonna pay his way at UM to get out of the sticks?
Spring is almost over and the quiet will begin. C'mon sept.

KEVIN OLSEN: "Being the guy is why I came here to Miami."

i was looking forward to seeing Ryan Williams... i certainly hope that he gets well soon enough to play at least a little bit... but i like Olsen's attitude... let's all hope that translates into wins...

Don't forget Olsen came to Miami as a very highly ranked high school qb. Most D1 teams running a pro-style offense would have loved to get this kid in 2013. Go read his rating and his performance at the Elite 11. BTW - the QB now starting at LSU did not finish as high as Olsen at the Elite 11 comp.

I realize nothing is guaranteed, but you have to have talent(physical and mental) first before you can become great. Not sure Miami has had that talent in quite some time.

Many teams start young players and do just fine, so not sure why this situation would be any different.

How many two (**) and three (***) players we picked up this week? We are looking good right now with the three (***) players from out of state. NOT

Ratings will change from now till febuary. Some of these 3 star kids will end up 4=5 stars , football for them hasn't even started and 7 0n 7's haven't started either. a kids junior ranking is never whats its gonna end up being. Looking at all the kids golden has recruited and how the majority of them have turned out be good players , from tracy howard to duke johnson, to deon bush, to stacey coley the list goes on and on golden knows how to recruit and develop talent. He just needs time to rebuild what was a really bad situation when he took over. the canes will get a bunch of 4-5 star guys but the guys who build depth who play special teams who make up the bulk of a team are 3 star guys even at bama.

When will Gallo be updating his casualty list to include Ryan Williams? Somehow its got to be Golden's fault

I'd say the waste of time is your post. UF has 2 0r 3 no stars and a couple 3 stars. FSU has 1 or 2 4 stars and a couple 2 and 3's. They mean nothing right now, as it's waaaay to early to even worry about it.

Congrats to Miami baseball moving up in the rankings on an 8 game winning streak, and oh by the way PASSING the Gators as well, lol. Lets pound UCF today, GO CANES!!!!

By the way Herald how about some NEWS ON UM BASEBALL, jeez man.

The star system means something, they just don't assign them arbitrarily, everybody doesn't get a 5 star rating. You must bring in talented athletes, and then develop them, which has been missing since Coker took over.

Right now they don't mean much. These kids still have their senior yrs to complete, and they could horrible seasons, so whatever star they have now, could drop like a rock. It's just too early to be worried about ratings.

I'm sure Kevin will do well at QB. Why is that you ask? Like the fella above said that is what Jameis Winston did. It Jameis did well why can't Kevin do the same.
The defense is another story. We need more players to step up and produce. Right now the only players we can really count on to contribute are Perryman, Tracy Howard and OR. Those are our 3 best defenders. I am a bit concerned about how much we are asking OR to do. I mean playing all those different positions and such. Don't wanna overwork the guy and have him get hurt.
So do not worry about Kevin just worry that OR can stay healthy and play at a high level.

Fighting in practice that is good...we need some of "IT" to come back on this team...dont hurt anybody..but intensity of necessary

Remember when the blog Pig, Pigerella, said that the Gatr Trash didn't need to schedule OOC road games (outside of Florida, please, Gatr Trash, just to pre-empt your predictable lame trailer donkey excuse) because the SEC sked was "tough enough" (cough, cough, Arky, Missy St., Kentucky, Ole Piss). But I digress.

LSU has signed to play home and home with UCLA. UGA and Notre Dame are about to sign the same deal.

So much for the Pig's argument.

How long till we hear about Driskel lighting it up in fall camp? Ol Pointy-eared banjo player should have great year.

BWWWHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH.

Only the lowly cowardly Gatr Trash refuses to do so

Norm, the OC manages the game through the QB by putting him in a position to be successful. Whoever wins the QB position must understand formations and effective communicate to his lineman, RBs, and WRs. Coley was very clear that Olsen knows the play book, but does not command the offensive unit...yet. The commanding presents of the QB will win the starting position. For an example, QB's initial audiable signal change to alert the center to make blocking arrangements, and hand signals to the WRs may change the depth of their routes from the same offensive formation. The offensive formation may show run, but the QB change blocking for play actions, and the receivers routes are between 5-10 yards.

As for the star system, it just evaluates potential bassed on sizes and athletic abilities...but football IQ is too often overlooked.

Canes remember the speech given by Clinton Portis... " There are no back ups "

everything is goldens fault....he's the type of guy that just has "bad aura" around him.

olsen/crow are weak....they nothing but practice QB's. Al golden cant make anything happen at UM....

UConn - Kevin Ollie wins National Championship in his first year....sanctions, barred from NCAA, put in a ridicules division with having to follow Calhoun....

Geno auriema....Uconn womens...."anything other than winning championships is unacceptable" A cow town vs a city like Miami...how can you not be sick!

some guys just have it....others dont...golden/dnofrio don't have it....

3 years and not 1 trophy in the case....

I agree fighting in practice is very good for the team. Just keep OR out of it though to be safe, we need that guy bad.

We have a new punter coming in as a transfer from the gator, last time we got a gator transfer he did very well in Brock Berlin. It follows we will be set at punter.
So we are set at QB if we follow the Jameis Winston example and we are set at punter. That takes care of the offense.
Again all we have to worry about is keeping OR healthy.
Don't let him get into any fights.

set at QB? lol......just look at Olsen. Does he look like an imposing QB?

he is gonna get destroyed...

Hey Turds.....

Wow...just looked at your schedule.....you all have 8 home games and 4 road games this year. You all REALLY are pathetic.....AFRAID TO TRAVEL?????

You have to ACTUALLY come out of your hole to be competitive!!!!!

The SEC.....where it's ALL MOKE AND MIRRORS!!

Lmao @ Gallo.....dude goes hard! Time will tell on KO, have SOME faith. Yeah IQ is overlooked, but give me a stud athlete who's IQ I can improve through film study, and repetition. Not to rip on him but Jimmy Gaines was a high IQ guy, but you could tell that he was being outmanned some of the time by better athletes. There's a reason fans were in their feelings about Travone Valentine, you want the studs, but like I said develop them.

^^^Perfect example of how the delusional comments of some posters and Golden's incompetence becomes troll bait. The OR stuff is hilarious and spot on. The OR's are a tactic to imply that there's such great competition at those positions, that the coaches can't possibly choose at this time. In reality, they just don't want to show their hand, because its a bluff again. Same stuff PSY 101 shenanigans every offseason. The OR is supposed to be a motivation tactic for players as well.

Also is it just me or does it seem (from reading this blog and its quotes) like there hasn't been a QB competition (prior to Ryan's injury) and isn't a true competition currently????

Read the quotes. Olsen is saying that he was the chosen back-up for Williams this season already but Ryan's injury has changed that, and also that he is the chosen starter or "the guy" to start our upcoming season since Ryan went down. Also read Gray Crow's last quote, "Playing quarterback you're always one play away so you always have to be ready and prepare yourself like you're going to get in there.''

Does that sound like open competition is being held, or that Crow is preparing to be Olsen's back-up? Where's the QB competition? Both Shannon and Golden played Harris at times when he was obviously injured/struggling instead of substituting Morris at QB. And Golden continued this again last season by sticking with a struggling/injured Morris over Practice Heisman candidate Williams.

Again where's the true competition in practice?

Talking about schedules
Gators play 6 top 25 teams:
Bama#3
LSU#16
Mizzou#8
Georgia#22
So Car#9
FSU#1

Canes play 3 top 25 teams:
Louisville #18
Duke #24
FSU#1

So not only does UF play more good teams, they play higher ranked teams as well.
Don't let the facts get in your way when posting.
Posts like yours only highlight your ignorance.

We are being made fun of with all this OR crap and deservedly so. I don't agree so much that this is a motivation tactic or that it implies there is so much competition. Don't know about that.
I looked up other schools' depth charts and none of them have so many ORs. Again that would be normal when replacing a starter lost to graduation or the draft here or there. And then again most positions would already come with a back up from last year who would be the presumed starter. To have 7 out of 11 positions listed as OR one side of the ball seems asinine to me. Seems like something is wrong.
Maybe it's just me but I don't see anyone else doing this crap.

Gators dont play OOc Out of state. That is huge. When was thelasttime the turds went to say,Oklahoma? Nebraska? Notre Dame?

Going to Baton Rouge, is like Bubba in gainseville taking the "truwk" and driving to ocala to see his long lost love- his cousin Lu lu.

Well what do U think the "ORs" indicate miramar? U shot down my theory, but went on to call the ORs asinine without providing any theory to why U believe it to be outside of--no one else is doing it.

Olsen was the clear #2. #1 goes down. Olsen new #1, at least until freshmen arrive. I would have thought everyone could have figured that out.

HTC
I don't have a clue why Golden chooses to put out a depth chart like this. I hope he has a plan, I hope he has a much clearer idea who his starters will be.
I'm just saying it looks asinine to me and that I don't see anyone else doing it to this extent.
I have no confidence in the DC, so when I see a debacle like this it just makes me wonder.

Going to Baton Rouge, is like Bubba in gainseville taking the "truwk" and driving to ocala to see his long lost love- his cousin Lu lu.

Yet you don't see them canes going to Baton Rouge.
Heck them canes won't even ho to Houston to play the Tigers.
When was the last time them canes played 6 ranked teams in the same season?
NEVER
When half your schedule consists of highly ranked teams in your own conference who needs to play more ranked teams OOC. Something them canes can't understand, it's just too logical for them.
Them canes don't play but one highly ranked team in conference, cause that's all their crappy conference has. Just one highly ranked team.
Cane clown be too dumb to understand that.
So understand this: my name is true and has been true for at least a decade.

Then whats the utility of speaking/promising "competition" especially at QB this offseason?

JAnd the ACC STILL won the title last season, and we STILL beat your sorry Gators, LMAO. So really if we suuk, the you must REALLY SUUUK. What a DA.

The same people who don't like the ---OR---- are also big fans of competition for a position. Pick one or the other.

By the number of reps being given, it was clear who was 1, 2 and 3 at QB this spring. Reps are a scarce good, so it obviously makes sense to utilize them consistent with your current plans for each qb.

Hey maggot. You're using last year's rankings in next year's sked strength? Haven't we seen that movie before?

Some SEC skewls are ALWAYs ranked preseason only to be shown to be frauds. UFraud was top 10 last year, remember? Mizzou won't be anything like last year. Graduation gutted them. You really think UGA w/out Murray is going to be top 20? BWWWAHA.

Only in the land of trailerparks and meth labs does that make any sense.

Again, we have "fans" criticizing other fans for speculating on a blog, when its a forum for just that and the coaching staff is once again ultimately responsible for the creation of the speculation due to a lack of transparency and mixed message *they* have provided us via the media.

Just like the Golden/Penn St. example used yesterday that proved how Golden's silence, lack of transparency, vague responses, sadness, irritation with and eventual dismissal of questions regarding that weekend gave fans space to speculate on what truly took place. The usage of "OR", "competition" and now the words of players are all contradicting of the other. That isn't our fault. We aren't being interviewed and making football policy at UM--the coaches are.

Its not Us who need to pick one--its the coaches who do--figuratively and literally.

This is second time U used the word "clear". If there's a clear #1, 2, and 3, then why even sale Us a supposed QB competition? If its "clear" then there's no competition going on.

The same people who don't like the ---OR---- are also big fans of competition for a position. Pick one or the other.

You must be talking about me then cause I sure as heck don't like OR. And I sure as heck don't like it being listed for 7 defensive positions.
Your statement to pick one side or the other is worthless. Most national powerhouses have a clear starter for 90% of their positions and have competition as well. Most schools have a set roster and competition is for a backup spot or to push the starter but they know who the starter is.
Give me a clear roster, you have had 3 years to know who is who here.

Coke boy lay off the white powder it makes you dumber than usual. FSU won the NC not the ACC. It's FSU and no one else, that's why the ACC sucks.

I am rooting for the Tampa kid Vogel. Please get in here and claim your punting scholarship. Here's a story you B-league writers should work on.

The punter will once again be the cane's best offensive player.

By now their should be starters, and the next guy has to work his azzzz off to beat the starter, this chit or or or or is basically saying they all playing, WHICH WE HAVE SEEN, this staff can not make these players better..... THATS WHY ITS OR OR OR OR OR OR OR, THEY ARE ALL THE SAME, EVERY TEAM IN THIS COUNTRY HAS STARTERS AND HE HAS TO BE BEATEN OUT..... OR OR OR OR OR OR OR OR OR OR OR OR OR OR OR OR OR OR OR OR OR OR OR OR OR OR OR OR OR OR OR OR OR OR OR OR OR OR OR OR OR OR OR OR OR OR OR OR OR OR OR OR OR OR OR OR OR OR OR OR OR OR OR OR OR OR OR OR OR OR OR OR OR OR OR OR OR OR OR OR OR OR OR OR OR OR OR OR OR OR OR OR OR OR OR OR Another thing Ryan Williams should go right up to FakeGolden and kick him square in the nuts, for letting this team operate last year with a QB hopping on one leg and playing a easy team and not even getting a ucking start, that's how u build depth and Morris can heal, instead Williams comes here and will never see a start>>>>>>>>> PATHETIC
