Projected starting QB Ryan Williams to undergo knee surgery next week; what's next for the Canes?

Here is the story The Miami Herald broke earlier tonight:

University of Miami fifth-year senior Ryan Williams, who was on course to be the starting quarterback in the fall, will undergo surgery early next week to repair what doctors believe is a torn anterior cruciate ligament, a person with knowledge of the situation first told the Miami Herald on Saturday.

The University of Miami later released a statement confirming the news The Herald broke.

Williams, 22, a Miramar High graduate from Pembroke Pines, injured his right knee while rolling out during a play in Friday night’s closed scrimmage at Greentree Field — minutes after throwing a 76-yard touchdown to Stacy Coley. UM said the injury did not occur with any contact.

The source told the Miami Herald that Williams was walking without crutches as of Saturday morning but was very stiff and getting the knee iced. It’s unknown whether Williams is out for the season. There is a possibility, depending on the results of his surgery and rehabilitation, that Williams could return to play, the source said.

Left at quarterback to pick up the pieces are second-team redshirt freshman Kevin Olsen and third-string sophomore Gray Crow. UM also has two scholarship quarterbacks arriving this summer: Brad Kaaya of West Hills (Calif.) Chaminade High and Malik Rosier of Faith Academy in Mobile, Ala.

Williams sat out at UM one year after transferring from Memphis, where he started 10 games as a freshman. He played sparingly the past two seasons behind now graduated starter Stephen Morris. In four games last season, Williams completed 68.8 percent of his passes (22 of 32) for 369 yards with three touchdowns and one interception.

UM has only two more practices next week before the spring game April 12 at Sun Life Stadium.

Get well soon, Ryan. He has surely paid his dues waiting with patience and class.

Dag tough break for a kid who has been a total team player since arriving. Hope and prayers go out to Ryan for a quick recovery.

Wow... This will pretty much end Williams UM career. Either Olsen takes the reins and runs away with the job or Kayaa beats him out and is The Present and Future.

Gator Win Not!
Little Gator Win Not !!
Little Gator Win Not!!!

Gator moron fan nam crow

The Gator getting stomped bad by UCONN tempered by the Ryan W news

Best wishes to Ryan Williams. Looks like it's between Olsen and Kaaya now. Very tough break.

Good luck Ryan all the best....Hope KO steps up and Kaaya comes in at least knowing the PBook with the intention to play Backup over Crow..
Go 'Canes

Get well soon Ryan. Olsen now has to step up and Rosier and Kaaya have to be ready.

Tough break for real. I wish him luck...and I heard good things about that boy KAAYA too

Starting Ryan "Bum" Williams would only slow the development of our current crop of QBs. Let's play this forward. Williams was never anything but a potential stopgap player. Let's all agree to move forward with Olsen & Kaaya and a new chapter of UM QB play. We all know what Williams brings to the table. Turnover free play, but play as boring as watching running water from the kitchen sink.

Your last lines are spot on, pine county.

"they're different coaches with different strengths who happen to have the exact same record.
Leave Shannon in the past. Hopefully Golden can earn his salary this year and turn it around."

Succinct.

i do't really expect THAT much from AG this year, other than we'd better be more competitive against equal or greater teams and beat those we should. This year's schedule is harder than last, so 7-5 isn't unthinkable. I'll take a 7-5, with some close battles that shows growth. Anything better is bonus. More blowouts and losses to teams we should beat start the drums...

Go Olsen!

The quote above was succinct, but not comprehensive. Shannon had the best class one year and Golden had looming death penalty for 2+. Also you need to mention the trends. One going down badly and the other going up. Same record but vastly different programs and expectations moving forward after year 3. No comparison.

WWC back in the house!!!

I see the blog has been cleaned up of most the dummies except white-haters HTC and Flava-Flav wannabe Calvin...

No matter, it seems there are more actual intelligent Canes fans than trolls.

And where is that idiot Gator "U be U" moron now after the lizards got dropped-kicked by UConn??

Hahahaha, karma baby...

And where are my boys Five Titles and The Real Ron Zook?

39-6

Olsen will start. Even Jameis red-shirted. If Kayaa can come and start either he's the second coming or Olsen is that bad.

Some guys just don't understand that when their posts have been totally ignored (by everyone) more than 100 times, it could mean that no one cares or that their comments lack interest.

Not a very smart move by Demetrius Jackson.

This is by far one of the most ridiculous and insensitive posts I have ever seen. we're talking about a kid who dreamed of being the starting qb for the Univerity Of Miami. He paid his dues and worked his tail off to learn the playbook like the back of his hand. He has always been a team player and all of the players trusted him. To say that losing a 5th year veteran is a benefit to the UM....man speak for yourself. If olsen was so good he would have beaten Williams out but instead he is more concerned with smoking weed and partying. I hope Olsen does well but mark my words, this injury did not do us any favors for next year, it just made things a lot worse

This should not lower expectations for Al Golden to finally show adequate coaching skills, for once.

I hope there is a way for Ryan Williams to either medically redshirt, or have minimal ligament damage.

You are another one that is a big part of the loser problem currently intrenched in the fan base. You are that unaware of talent to listen to idiots who call a class of recruits top tier without multiple linemen on either lines of scrimmage. Never has a class had that few linemen ever and had top tier, let alone top twenty consideration.

What has been at Miami, for the last three years, is greater talent than what was here the three years prior. The greater amount of wins have not occurred despite the greater talent. Try to add a little reality to the lack of success on the football field for Al Golden's tenure, please.

More excuses for Golden.

MAYBE I'M JUST NOT SEEING IT BUT FOR SOME REASON I'M JUST NOT WORRIED ABOUT OUR QB SITUATION..I BELIEVE AND I WANT WILLIAMS TO RETURN AT SOME POINT THIS SEASON BUT WITH ALL I'VE HEARD ABOUT OLSEN'S PROGRESS AND THE TALENT OF KAAYA I FEEL THAT THE ONLY THING THAT CAN KEEP THIS TEAM FROM WINNING 11 GAMES AND AN ACC COASTAL DIVISION CHAMPIONSHIP IS GUESS WHO??? COACH D !! IF THAT UNIT CAN SOME HOW BECOME GOOD ALL YEAR THAN DO NOT BE SHOCKED TO FIND THE CANES FINISH THE SEASON IN THE TOP 10.. TOO MUCH TALENT, NO NCAA CRAP OVER HEAD. TIME FOR CANES FANS TO RALLY BEHIND THE TEAM AND DEMAND THAT THE STAFF PRODUCE A WINNING PRODUCT THAT WE CANE FANS DESERVE.. "NO MORE EXCUSES"

Good luck on your recovery, Ryan.

It was sounding like Olsen was catching up to him anyways.
Fell bad for the kid he earned a chance which he got but this was a tough break for a guy who has been a real team player the last few years.

Scoreboard Gainsville.

Ryan, if you're reading this ignore the ignorant, and believe those who love UM and Hurricane football wish you ONLY a speedy recovery and a chance to see some action this year.
You NEVER know what may happen these next 5 months. Work hard on your rehab knowing true UM fans and grads APPRECIATE your hard work and dedication. On top of that, you're getting a first class education and a degree from a top 35 University.
God Bless.

GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO GAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAATORS !!!

21-16

u ?

ur fuuckin' unranked in everything

FU

21-16

Man some of ya'll are messed up ! That kid has been nothing but a class act & team player & you morons r dissing him ! Have some class or keep ur BS to yourself! True Canes fan feel for you Ryan! Work hard as you've always have & get well soon !

u are u .........we're ranked in baseball right now......its ok.....we know being from trailersville ur stilled f*d up on meth but its gonna be worse when u come down from ur high 'cause the gayturds lost bwaha

Get well soon Ryan, and thank you for all your hard work and dedication.

On another note, since the Herald STILL will NOT print ANYTHING about the baseball team, we're on a 7 game winning streak and are 21-12 and 11-4 in the ACC after taking Game 2 from VT 4-3 yesterday.

Olsen will start and the Canes will be better for it, The kid has all the skill and the only draw backs will be experience on the college level and learning the playbook. Kaaya and Rosier backups this year. Best wishes for a full recovery to Williams. The future is here!

Williams will be back if not this year , next year. If he gets a medical redshirt he can play after he graduates. Olsen or kaaya are the future. Olsen will start if williams has not recovered. He knows the playbook and kaaya hasnt even seen it yet.
Looks like jlo is now hiding in the darkness of night now that his 3rd string sport failed him yet again. Get you uk gear now jlo.

Best wishes to Ryan. Yes he was a stopgap player, but he would have had one of the better seasons by a QB of all time. We dont need a showoff doitall at the QB spot. We need a ball distributor, get the ball in the hands of the playmakers Coley, Dorsett, Waters, Johnson, etc. With his accuracy and intelligence it would've been special.

It doesn't matter who the QB is. We have the best receivers and the best RB in the nation, who will take the pressure off the QB.

Tuff break for RDoub!

Still he wasn't the most talented qb around Green Tree but I hate to see him go out like this!

On darn thing foesho is KO better "own the process" (whatever the h3ll that means in that 300 page binder).

Mahoney --what were ag's classes ranked with the death penalty hanging over the program? Top 25? Def not 116 in the country and not last in the fukking weak acc.
ped state had 1 less win in the last 2 years with real sanctions not a threat. Where players were allowed to leave.

Why does Golden continues to pick 3 star athletes and New Jersey while 4 and 5 stars leave Miami to play for other schools? I believe Goldens BS has caught up with him and his DC who cant land quality players in south florida, just terrible and needs to change to be sucessful, need better coachs with experience not novice like Golden and Temple crew, DC is just a dummy about football.

bermuda triangle- getover your stupid self- the "weak acc" won the national ship. So shut up.

Ryan Williams: Good luck and get well soon son.

------

Its time for Olsen to grow up and be a man. No more silly immature bs. He's the man now at the U. Kaaya and Rosier should redshirt, and the QB position should be left to Olsen,. Crow, and hopefully Williams if he recovers- IF HE WAS WALKING WITHOUT CRUTCHES ON STAURDAY AFTER THE INJURY, IT ISNT ALL THAT BAD. SURGERY WILL SET HIMBACK ABOUT 5-6 MONTHS. WHERE WILL THAT BRING US? August - September. Boy may take a medical redshirt asn start over, or try to finish up and see what happens if he wants to try things out with the NFL

Yeah fsu won nc.
That makes the acc the best conference? Stupid.
We were last in the weak acc (besides fsu) in defense --you're ok with that? You'll accept it Bc fsu won the nc?

If Politics and favoritism and past alumni would stop playing out Crow is the man
He has more "Gray " matter and character than all these cats combined.....
You know Olsen will stumble again. His bro can't save him all the time!
Let's see how it all plays out......

I'd like to think that Kaaya and Rosier could push Olsen, but I think that coming in cold on the playbook and system precludes that. Go Olsen!

I'd rather have Olsen start, regardless of my respect for RW as a dedicated, loyal team player. I hate the injury for him and hope he recovers quickly. I'd rather see him get a medical redshirt than try to push to get back to his last shot as starter this year. We don't need another QB with real durability issues this year.

On the flip side, not having a solid backup if GO goes down is scary too. Here's to hoping RW recovers enough to play again this year, even if as the backup. What a crummy situation for him.

Crow????? Well, shoot. 3rd string now, 4th string in 13 with a hobbled SMO17, whom RW couldn't get in over...who knows? If GO gets a ding in the Ark St. game, we may find out....shudders...

I have some balancing points on the RS/AG comparison that haven't been brought up in a while, but really, maybe it's not worth mentioning anymore.

Looks like our WRs and TEs and RBs could be really deep this year and next. With GO and BK and MR battling for QB, we do have reason for real optimism. OL should be good too...Wondering if Coley is going to get more creative in playcalling, a la Jedd Fisch...

Not believing the hype on the Defensive improvement at all. I think there may be some truth to it, but am extremely skeptical. We do have more talent and [bitter] experience, but the gamble by AG to stay the course is Ballsy...Really hope to be proven wrong; that with talent DNO can coach...

Remember, that even with RS's spoiled brat crew, AG/DNO had the talent in 11 to cold-coach a 22nd ranked defense, whereby the best players foolishly bolted for the NFL in 12 - setting us back BADLY since.

Dipsh*& LBs, Ray Ray, AJ Highsmith - I rest my case - LOL.

Not sure I buy the daily charges that the Jersey boys INTEND to turn UM into a big ten type team; rather I'd go as far to say that they might think they have a secret formula to create an innovative hybrid big AND fast Pro style defense. It's a risky experiment that a dearth of talent and coaching rigidity haven't helped so far.

It is intriguing, no doubt. Cause for extreme Concern, NO DOUBT.

Again, this year's schedule is 3 games harder than last year's off the bat OOC: UL, UNeb, Cinci, Ark St.( bowl winner in 13) vs. UF, FAU, SvSt., & USF...inarguable.

Can anyone reasonably argue/expect on Offense; new QBs and OL replacements, & on Defense: some addition by subtraction, more JUCO stopgaps, some package playing Sophs, and fresh recruits to be at least as good, if not MUCH better than the 13 roster?!

We have DJ back, but none should hang all hopes on his health and Offensive ball control success completely offsetting defensive breakdowns....

The rest of our ACC schedule is comparable to 13: UNC is going to be good. Duke could still be good, yes, Duke - even with a New OC, VT - always a challenge, and FSU - obvious.

Do we have WF, UVA, Pitt, GT nailbiters? All possible, if our defense looks ANYTHING like last year's and our offense is having growing pains with new QB and OL replacements...no?

My main point for us fans this year is tempered expectations, insofar as: OL and QB regrowth with expected struggles... aaaand Defense that isn't just terrible again against teams with a pulse.

All this talk about winning the ACC and going to 10-11 wins just seems unrealistic, given what evidence we have.

Hate to dredge it up, but even RS's and AG's 11 teams lost a bunch of games that we could've won: we competed until the end of RS's last year and did compete in AG's first.

yeah, yeah, UVA, USF, UWisc, Notre Dame....Point being, if we go 6-6, 7-5, or 8-4, but don't suffer the blowout losses and defensive dumpster fires of 13, I'll be okay with AG as not a total fraud.

If we see the same patterns of bad coaching this year though, String em up.

I still maintain that AG was turned down for the PSU job that he BADLY wanted, but will grudgingly give him the BOTD on trying to make the best of this situation, so he can "move on up" ASAP.

Good.

Get us there by 2016, or damned close, then get the hell outta here, so we can get the next regime.

I will love my cardiac Canes the whole way.

Really looking forward to the drama this year.

39-6. good luck find a QB for your crappy school, U(nranked), that no one here has ever attended.

21-16

Tuff break for RDoub!

Still he wasn't the most talented qb around Green Tree but I hate to see him go out like this!

On darn thing foesho is KO better "own the process" (whatever the h3ll that means in that 300 page binder).

nash, lol, i ws thinking the same thing about that stupid "own the process" statement. The thing about olsen though is, he has that kind of bernie kosar mentality, where he'll just change a play and is free spirited out their and will just sling it and let the rest fall where it may. The thing about ryan williams going down tho, it's going to hurt the receivers some what but olsen, unlike kyle wrong will let the ball go!

I did however want to see ryan williams play this year, cause he will make all the intermediate throws and than would've bombed teams by surprise he didn't respect his arm strangth.
