Projected starting QB Ryan Williams to undergo knee surgery next week; what's next for the Canes?

Here is the story The Miami Herald broke earlier tonight:

University of Miami fifth-year senior Ryan Williams, who was on course to be the starting quarterback in the fall, will undergo surgery early next week to repair what doctors believe is a torn anterior cruciate ligament, a person with knowledge of the situation first told the Miami Herald on Saturday.

The University of Miami later released a statement confirming the news The Herald broke.

Williams, 22, a Miramar High graduate from Pembroke Pines, injured his right knee while rolling out during a play in Friday night’s closed scrimmage at Greentree Field — minutes after throwing a 76-yard touchdown to Stacy Coley. UM said the injury did not occur with any contact.

The source told the Miami Herald that Williams was walking without crutches as of Saturday morning but was very stiff and getting the knee iced. It’s unknown whether Williams is out for the season. There is a possibility, depending on the results of his surgery and rehabilitation, that Williams could return to play, the source said.

Left at quarterback to pick up the pieces are second-team redshirt freshman Kevin Olsen and third-string sophomore Gray Crow. UM also has two scholarship quarterbacks arriving this summer: Brad Kaaya of West Hills (Calif.) Chaminade High and Malik Rosier of Faith Academy in Mobile, Ala.

Williams sat out at UM one year after transferring from Memphis, where he started 10 games as a freshman. He played sparingly the past two seasons behind now graduated starter Stephen Morris. In four games last season, Williams completed 68.8 percent of his passes (22 of 32) for 369 yards with three touchdowns and one interception.

UM has only two more practices next week before the spring game April 12 at Sun Life Stadium.

Get well soon, Ryan. He has surely paid his dues waiting with patience and class.

I had projected an 8-5 record this season. Lowering my expectations to 6-7. People on this blog underestimate the magnitude of the Williams loss.

I think Ryan going down is a blow. I don't know if the other QB's are really ready. But this is another test for the OC. He's got to look at each offensive player, see what they can bring, and mold whoever is at QB into that.

This is touch. UM might lose more games than it wins next year. Is this going to be 'Goldy's 4th year?

The noose around Golden's neck just got a little tighter.

I feel bad for Ryan Williams, it's a tough break.

Olsen, Crow, and Kaaya now. My money is on the kid from Cali

Cool Cat,

Golden is going to get a pass. You know he couldn't possibly be blamed for not getting to the acc champs hip game for a 4th straight yearm

I wish Williams a speedy recovery! The play book will not be the main challenge for an incoming freshman. The ability to recognize defensive schemes and make adjustments at the line of scrimmage that separates the skill level of QBs. I will continue to preach my preference of the need to always have a QB coach on staff. Why have a TE coach and a WR coach? The TE works out with the lineman and WRs.

Just my 2 cents as a fan and former QB.

Bummer about RW. Kaaya vs Olsen I guess.

Way to go Canes baseball, SWEPT VT and 8 games winning streak. 22-12 and 11-4 in ACC. Keep it up guys.

I'M SORRY BUT I KNOW THE SCHEDULE IS TOUGH BUT THE CANES HAVE MORE TALENY ALL AROUND THAN PAST FEW SEASONS. THE PROBLEMS LAST YEAR WAS A WEAK SCHEDULE THAT HID A LOT OF PROBLEMS EARLY, DUKE GOT HURT, DORSETT GOT HURT.. BUT THE PROBLEMS WAS THAT 1. JAMES COLEY DID A TERRIBLE JOB USING THE TALENT HE HAS(HOPING THAT IMPROVES THIS YEAR) AND WE ALL KNOW DUNNO IS THE PROBLEM AND WILL BE UNTIL HE SHOWS US ALL HE CAN COACH. IF SECONDARY IMPROVES(THEY WILL) AND THE SACKS TOTAL IMPROVES(40 PLUS) THE CANES CAN WIN 10 GAMES EASY BY OUTSCORING TEAMS. COLEY (JAMES) TENDS TO BE TOO PREDICTABLE AND DOES NOT KNOW THE PASSING GAME VERY WELL. CASE IN POINT LOOK AT FSU WITH A FRESHMAN QB LAST YEAR COMPARED TO A SENIOR QB THE YEAR BEFORE WHEN COLEY WAS OC BUT COULDN'T CALL THE PLAYS?? SEE MY POINT. HOW CAN YOU STOP DUKE FROM RUNNING,DORSET FROM GETTING DEEP,COLEY FROM DOING EVERYTHING AND ANYTHING HE WANTS,,WAFFORD FROM CATCHING ANYTHING AGAINST LB AND WEAK SAFETIES,,GOOD DEPTH IN WATERS,SCOTT, LEWIS. HOW CAN YOU STOP THIS TALENT ?? POOR COACHING,,POOR PLAY CALLING..IF COLEY IMPROVES AS A PLAY CALLER CANES WIN 10 EASY DESPITE THE DUMBO ON THE DEFENSIVE SIDE.. I THINK THEY DO.. 10-2 REGULAR ACC COASTAL CHAMPS LOSES TO FSU TWICE BUT CLOSE AND WINS A BOWL GAME..FINAL RECORD 11-3 TOP 10 FINSH.. YES !! I'VE BEEN DRINKING ALL DAY..

There are two healthy QB's on the roster hand picked by Golden.....he has the entire summer and the fall to get them ready

Dude, your caps lock is on.

This is by far one of the most ridiculous and insensitive posts I have ever seen. we're talking about a kid who dreamed of being the starting qb for the University Of Miami. He paid his dues and worked his tail off to learn the playbook like the back of his hand. He has always been a team player and all of the players trusted him. To say that losing a 5th year veteran is a benefit to the UM....man speak for yourself. If olsen was so good he would have beaten Williams out but instead he is more concerned with smoking weed and partying. I hope Olsen does well but mark my words, this injury did not do us any favors for next year, it just made things a lot worse.

Sorry to ruffle your feathers!!! dude.
1) "To say that losing a 5th year veteran is a benefit to UM" I don't recall this quote buddy. As a 5th year senior he is definitely valuable coming off the bench unless the young QBs are just not ready to play.
2) We're all fans. That's short for fanatics. I could care less how much work any player has put in, or what his personal aspirations are. I am only interested in UM the team, doing very well, winning conference championships, and playing in Title games.
3) Ryan Williams IF, and I do mean IF--he won the starting job---would be a placeholder until Olsen or Kaaya is ready, PERIOD!!
3) Duke Johnson got injured last year at FSU. We didn't have his (Duke's) services for several big games down the stretch. A far superior talent, player, you name it. Nobody cried. NEXT MAN UP! It was unfortunate he was not available. Same situation with Williams.
4) A kid who dreammed??? really?? how many boys & girls have dreams??? Does it mean we escape reality???
Ryan Williams is a game clock manager and nothing special. Sorry to burst your bubble!! I say let's groom our young QBs. What's done is done!

-----------------------------------------------------

It seems that gator fans are a bit chippy today.

As I said a few weeks ago, I really didnt expect uF to do much vs. the higher seeded teams. They are now 4-4 vs. teams seeded 7th or higher in the tourney over the last 4 years. The results vs. top 25 OoC teams this year aren't that impressive either. I guess they are who they are. A nice top 10-15 team. I will congradulate them on a nice season. Disappointing, but nice.

I do believe the uF lady gators golf team is still doing pretty well. That's really exciting stuff for gator nation. That and the prognosticators picking the uF football team to win more than 4 games this year. So, all is looking good for the gator faithful.

As for Williams, we needed his experience at the position this year. His presence will be missed.

^ I wish him well. He's been nothing but a true team guy.

gAYTOR FANS ARE CHIPPY TODAY FOR WHAT REASON?

GAYTORS:

U LOST INTHE FINAL FOUR. LASTTIME I CHJECKED THERE ARE NO MEDALS OR TROPHIES OR FOR THAT MATTER ANY POINTS FOR RECOGNITION FOR LOSING IN THE FINAL FOUR. BY DEFINITION, YOU LOST. LOSERS AND GATIRS ARE SYNONYMOUS. GET OVER IT. GATORS CHOKE AGAIN.

DOES ANYONE HERE ALSO THINK BILLY DONOVAN LOOKS LIKE THAT VAMPIRE IN 30 DAYS OF NIGHT?

SECOND POINT, LOSER GATORS- YOU GOT BEAT IN THE SERIES BY UNRANKED KENTUCKY IN BASEBALL. GUESS WHAT LOSERS??
YOU WONTBE RANKED NEXT WEEK AND MIAMI WILL BE!

BY THE WAY, MIAMI WAS RANKED IN SOME POLLS, JUST WANTED TO CLEAR THE AIR FOR YOU METHHEAD REDNECXKS FROM ALACHUA COUNTY.

Someone please tell Demetrius Jackson to STFU. You play, you don't decide who plays or who the "future" is at quarterback. You have not earned a mouthpiece!

sorry about all the CAPS guys. i had my fingers so far up my mother's a** i couldn't get to the keyboard.

39-6

Gaytor didnt liike the caps? Obiously his IP afdress isnt the same as the real brandonspikes...

Get used to it gator fans you are dooshes. Your school is dooshy, you are miamis beetch and always will be,

And in the end only your womens lacrosee team will win a national ship

Ryan all the best and a speedy recovery. Please know that all rational and adult UM fans understand the heartbreak you must feel after waiting for several years, no transferring again to another school and being a great teammate (not being a cancer like many players can be) and waiting to get your chance as the starting QB of the 'Canes. We have something that is lacking in much of society today and that is empathy. We are truly empathetic about your situation. We also realized your worth to the team as regards your talent, experience and leadership. These thing will be missed.

Many South Florida guys have to be wined and dined and goaded and have their rump kissed to eventually end up playing in Coral Gables. You, Duke and several others bleed orange and green all the time (UM just never gave you a scholarship coming out of high school) and always wanted to be here. I hope your surgery goes well and that you can play again this season. If that is not the case all the best to you on getting a medical redshirt for next year or to you in the future in all your endeavors.

As regards the future, hopefully Kevin Olsen steps up, matures, studies the playbook and takes over the reins as our QB and leader. The other 2 incoming Freshmen have a very good opportunity and so does Gray Crow. As regards Crow, sometimes you have a diamond in the rough and you never know what you have until adversity strikes.

@Cane4Life
Great comment. Ryan, so sorry to hear about this. GOD has a plan

nice post ^^^^

Ryan Williams- get well quick.

Keep your Head up Ryan!

If ryan doesnt play , he will get a medical redshirt. He only has about 4 months to recover before fall practice starts. Olsen is the future, I dont see kaaya coming in and learning the book in time. Hopefully he brings the compet next year.
Foley, can we get a rematch?

Hell no! We aren't all stupid up here.

If I still had my job, it would have been 21-16 Gators!

Rabblerouser, Calm down your man crush, Olsen is a little too young for you anyway.

Too bad for Williams, wish him well.
But Olsen should have no problem. The way this offense is performing so far in practice it doesn't matter who the QB is.
I dare say once again it seems we have one of the best offenses in college football and if the D can just improve a tiny little bit we will be fine.
In fact we will be better with Olsen he has more talent and has scored more TDs in practice so far.

Demetrius, you just revealed yourself an idiot!

This really sucks for Ryan. My mouth dropped when I read my text alert from bleacher report that he went down. I'm happy he was able to get up on his own power and walk off the field but this is devastating for him and The U. I was really hoping to see him start and have a successful year. I know he may not be the most physically gifted but he knows the playbook inside and out and can manage the game well. That's pretty much all that we need. On top of that, he has been getting stronger. Perfect example was hitting Stacey Coley the other day on a 76yrd bomb perfectly in stride. His short passes are on point. Gets the ball off before the WR even turns his head. Jharris never did that and Morris only did that a little bit better than JHarris did. He reminds me a big like Ken Dorsey. Not a physical specimen by any means but a brain with good timing. Dorsey had excellent timing, hands down. He made up for all of his physical drawbacks with that. I saw Williams doing the same thing. With the WRs, TEs, RBs that we have in our stables all he would have to do is simply manage the game and let the stars do their thing. Just like Dorsey did. Now Olsen needs to grow up much faster than originally planned. I've been hearing excellent reviews about him lately. A couple of the practices I attended, I saw him perform very well. Great mechanics for a kid that hasn't stepped onto a college football field yet for a game. Glad to hear all the hype about Kaaya. But until he sets foot on campus I'll hold my opinions. People are verrry quick to write him up as the "future" when he has yet to throw a college ball yet. Crossing my fingers that it's all true but holding my tongue until I see it.

Still hoping that Ryan is back and starts this year. We need his senior leadership.

GET WELL SOON RW, WE NEED YOU. GO CANES!!!!!

What does a loser trailer donkey do when his GAT-TAHS lose? Retreat to the meth trailer? Catch flies? Stroll the scenic sights of Trailerville in his El Camino? Stop and smell the stench of over-flowing sewers?

Ahhh, so many choices, gatr trash.

"Gets the ball off before the WR even turns his head. Jharris never did that and Morris only did that a little bit better than JHarris did." -CANETILLIDIE

Really??? Harris did it countless times and far better than Morris did probably considering that Morris oftentimes used his arm strength over touch.

Its really ironic how Ryan Williams practice TDs are more memorable than Jacory's 70 (2nd all-time) in game TDs now. Including that one beautiful strike to Travis Benjamin on the FSU 5 yard line that set up the go ahead score and eventual win in his sophomore year--the last time we beat them. Or the countless laid passes to Theron Collier, Leonard Hankerson and Jimmy Graham. William's practice passes trump all those memories and cause amnesia I suppose.

Ryan is *of course* "hard-workin", "diligent", "responsible", "a team player", "intelligent" etc etc…of course no one with physical talent could have any of those attributes--its always labeling a person one of two ways LOL! Either this or that.

Was Jacory a physical specimen? Not at all.

HarrietTubmanCane

Harris's short passes were weak, plain and simple. Morris threw a better short pass simply because it had more zip on it. Harris would stare down his WR's giving DBs time to make a play before he ever threw the ball. Man where have you been under a rock? The only thing Harris had was that slow motion rainbow pass that he completed a few times. That's it. And even with that, the WRs had to slow down to let the ball catch up to them giving the DBs (again) time to catch up and make a play. Morris never did that. As a matter of fact, Morris overthrew his WRs. I prefer that to a pass where the WR slows down and the DB catches up and can pull an INT. Which happend more times than he completed those rainbow passes. Harris was an overhyped joke. Part of that #1 recruiting class that amounted to nothing. Only Spence out of that class left his mark. Morris might have stared down his WR a few times but in comparison to Harris, I'll state on the record that Harris stared down every single WR on every pass he ever threw at Miami.

Now when it comes to practice, I'm not sure who was leading in the TD category but Williams percentage was much higher than Olsen's and Williams had more completions. Plus I think I'm correct in saying that Olsen leads in the INT category at practice.

None of what I just said is a knock on Olsen. I love that he's a Cane and will get his shot. I'm just concerned if he's game ready. Too early to say of course, but I'm going to be optimistic about this. I was really pulling for Williams to close out his senior year great. I really thought, and still think, that he can if he heals up in time. Williams is a senior with tons more experience than anyone else we have and has complete knowledge of the playbook inside and out. Olsen is a RsFr with plenty of time in front of him.

Just my honest opinion. I want the best for the team, period. My wishes/goals for this team is to play like Old Miami Teams with IDGAF attitude. I want to see the defense use a 4-3scheme with man coverage. I want an improvement on Defense for the Love of God. Heard on the other sites that Coach No'D's contract will be bought out at the end of the year no matter the outcome and a list of coaches will be presented to Golden to give his input on. Again, those are not my words, just what I gathered on the other sites. Hope it turns out to be true.
Butch Davis would be an excellent hire as a DC. I'll take him all day if he's available. He didn't have anything to do with what happened at UNC and the NCAA stated that. He's free and clear.

GO CANES!!!!!

ITU, there was a post there about it. I'm not registered to the site so I can't see everything that everyone posts but it's there. Again, it's a rumor, nothing concrete. I'm not trying to get my hopes up either because I want him gone at the end of year. Hell the end of last year would have been a great xmas gift. Hope this helps.

GO U!!!!!

Damn I'm still upset about what happened to RW. After all this time and patience and this happens to him. He was going to have so many tools right at his finger tips. I really and truly hope he recovers in time to put something together. He's got a good head on his shoulders, a good game manager IMO. I called for him to be put in once Morris got injured not because he was next but because I felt like he was ready. He had experience from playing at Memphis. Even though at Memphis was a disaster due to the starting QB going down and a whole new Oline with practically no experience. He had to jump right into it without any preparation. Here's some info from his stint at Memphis

"As a true freshman in 2010, Williams started 10 games, completing 165-of-290 passes (56.9 percent) for 2,075 yards with 13 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. He replaced former UM quarterback Cannon Smith in Memphis’ starting lineup after Smith sustained a concussion." -- I don't think that's bad for a true freshman that was thrown into it quickly with no Oline to work with. Yet here he has grown mentally and physically and then this happens. Heartbroken for him.

Olsen - it's all up to you. Only issue I have with Olsen is if he's game time ready. That's literally it. He has all the fundamentals you want in a QB. Cocky too from what I've heard from a few people. I like that. Williams was more of a quiet leader, much like Dorsey was. Dorsey would get loud only every once in a while. I want to see Olsen command the huddle. I want to see the players play for him not with him, get me... Like the way they did for Dorsey. I saw that with Williams. Now I'm going to be looking for that with Olsen.

MAN I'M SO LOOKING FORWARD TO THIS SEASON. GOTTA CHECK FLIGHTS UP TO LOSERVILLE!

GO CANES!!!!!
