VIDEO: Canes quarterback Kevin Olsen, CB Tracy Howard, LB Denzel Perryman talk spring game

Kevin Olsen's numbers weren't pretty (7 of 21, 65 yards, 1 INT, 0 TDs) in the spring game.

Here's what he had to say when it was over.

Cornerback Tracy Howard picked Olsen off late in the scrimmage. He also finished with two tackles. Here's what he had to say after it was over.

TH3 shared that the focus for everyone during the summer is to get bigger, stronger, explosive, and faster. He did not mention anything about improving techniques (i.e., making tackles, taking better angles on tackles, getting off of blocks, etc.). Oslen and all available QBs will struggle the first half of the season. Olsen will get better, but I still see Kaaya being the next QB.

Did not like what I saw from Olsen and his interviewing persona is cringeworthy.

KO Smells like MarveWright.

Looking forward to Kaaya and Rosier.

Beginning of 2014 could be rough.

Not a great start without a doubt, however this was as game like environment as Olsen has been in so we'll just have to see how it plays out.

Kevin will get better with time. I don't think the long ball is the way to go right now or later. You have a lot of potential play makers that can take short or intermediate pass and take it the distance. Coaching will determine how far this team will go this year. Even with a new QB this team has enough talent to win the coastal division.

I heard their were no emotions or excitement, I heard both QB are right down pathetic......... Reading Cane boards and its not good, some fans said that was it for them, said they have no reason to go watch them, said they look just like last years squad maybe worse, NO EMOTIONS OR EXCITEMENT>>>>>>>>> THATS GOLDEN WELCOME TO PSU........I TOLD UUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU, 30 year Cane fan, this is the worst coaching staff for DA U IN THE LAST 30 years

Rick , its all scripted....they want the defense to look better and not let anyone see what kevin has in the tank. Look at the ufelony spring game. They said the offense looked a little better but the defense wasnt trying to really tackle. At least we have good looking uniforms. Cant wait til sept to see what olsen really has.

TOO EARLY TO PANIC,,NO SERIOUS INJURIES,TOO MUCH TALENT..THE ONLY THING THAT CAN KEEP THIS FOOTBALL TEAM FROM WINNING 1O PLUS GAMES IS THE COACHING.. I KNOW WE HAVE QB ISSUES BUT IF ALL OLSEN,,GRAY,, KAAYA OR WILLIAMS HAVE TO DO IS HAD THE BALL OFF TO A VERY TALENTED BACKFIELD AND SIMPLY TAKE WHAT THE DEFENSE GIVES YOU AND SON'T TRY TO FORCE ANYTHING THE CANES WILL WIN 10 GAMES EASY.. THE ONLY THING THAT NEEDS TO HAPPEN IS TO DEVELOP AN EXPLOSIVE RUNNING GAME AND LEARN HOW TO EXECUTE A GOOD SCREEN PASS AND THE CANES OFFENSE WILL STILL BE EXPLOSIVE.. A POWERFUL RUNNING GAME WILL CREATE ONE/ONE MATCHUPS WITH PERHAPS THE BEST RECEIVING CORE IN THE NATION AS A GROUP..WHO CAN DEFEND DORSETT ONE/ONE DEEP ?? WHO CAN DEFEND STACY COLEY ONE/ONE PERIOD ?? WHAT ABOUT CLIVE WAFFORD AGAINST LB'S AND SAFETIES ?? C'MON MAN JUST TOO MUCH TALENT NOT TO MENTION DEPTH SCOTT,,WATERS, LEWIS,, JONES,, SANDLANDS,, ALL THE CANES NEED IS GOOD OL PLAY AND WE TRUE CANES FANS KNOW COACH KEHOE WILL HAVE THAT OL READY.. NOW AS FAR AS DEFENSE GOES IF WE CAN PLAY STRONG AGAINST THE RUN TO KEEP TEAMS FROM DOMINATING T.O.P WE WILL BE FINE BECAUSE THE SECONDAY AND PASS RUSH WILL BE THE STRENGTH..MCCORD SHOULD HAVE 10SACKS MINIMUM AND MUHAAHMED SHOULD HAVE 10 ALSO..THAT WILL DEPEND ON 2 THINGS.. 1. EXPLOSIVE OFFENSE THAT SCORES IN BUNCHES..2. STOPPING THE RUN.. TEAMS WILL HAVE TO THROW MORE WHICH SHOULD LEAD TO MORE SACKS AND INTS. LOOK FOR HOWARD,,GUNTER,, JENKINS, TO HAVE 5 PLUS PICKS EACH WITH BUSH,CARTER,,BURNS,,PERRYMAN,,GETTING AT LEAST 2 PICKS PLUS EACH.. THE CANES CAN EASILY LEAD THE ACC IN INTERCEPTIONS BY THE DEFENSE AND SACKS THIS YEAR.. YOU HEARD IT FIRST.. 10-2 ACC COASTAL CHAMPS..

Hey tell Ray Lewis to give Ryan Williams some of his deer antler spray and we will be alright.

I don't look at the spring game as a reflection of how we are going to do in the regular season. After all, is our defense against our offense. With that said, I remember when McGahee, a new running back at the time, didn't do much against our defense in the spring game, and in the regular season he was unstoppable. I also remember when Kyle Wright was here, and he looked really good in the spring game. We all know what happened. I'm not going to put Olsen down, and trust he is going to get better with each game. If we beat Louisville, Olsen is going to send a strong message that this season is going to be different. Till then, we can only hope our team is going to be better than last year.

Congratulations to Dexter Williams for committing to the U. Also committing Patchan who's father used to play for the U.

KEVIN OLSENAND GRAY CROW STUNK. PERIOD. THE FAULKT INMY VIEW,HAS TOLAY SQUARE ON THE OFFENSIVE COPORDINTAOR. COLEY IS A STOOPID A55 WHO CANT OR WONT REALIZE THAT THE MONEY IS ON SHORT COMPLETIONS, SCREENS AND TO THE TIGHT ENDS. NOT THE FR--GIN BOMBS DOWNFIELD WHICH NO MATTER WHAT ARE LOW PERCENTAGE COMPLETIONS!!!!!!!

WHO CAN COVER BEAU SANDLAND OR CLIVE WALFORD? nOBODY!

SLANTS AND SCREENS TO MALCOLM LEWIS AND COLEY ALL DAY AND POIUND THE ROPCK WITH GUS AND TUCKER AND WE GET WHAT WE DIODNT HAVE LASTYEAR: TIMEOF POSSESSION. MESSAGE TO JAMES COLEY: STOP THROWING THE LONG BALL! TEAMS WILL NOT BE SCRRD OF MIAMI IF THEY KEEP GOING THREE AND OUT BC YOU THROW THESE UNCATCHABLE 50 YD BOMBS!!!!

FURTHERMORE OLSEN AND CROW ARE NOT ACCURATE AND THEY HAVE YET TO GET THEIR TIMING DOWN WITH THE WRS

THE DEFENSE LOOKS GOOD. THEY LOOK ANGRY AND ARE GANG TACKLING LIKE CRAZY.

CANT SAY MUCH ABOUT A SPRING GAME BUT IF THE SEASON GOES LIKE THAT, DOINFORIO STAYS AND JAMES COLEY MUST GO- WE NEED QUARTEBACKS WHO CAN FRIGGIN THINK AND CONNECT.

AGREED- SO FAR THIS LOOKS LIKE: KyleWrightKirby FreemanRobertMarve 2.0

Brad Kaaya and Malik: The position is your for the taking. You all come in, and execute, make plays and dont make stoopid mistakes, you will be the next QB at UM and Kevin Olsen or Gray Crow can go to Mephis or Bowling Green or whatever

Im pissed. Why cant UM ever recruit a QB worth anything?

jameis didnt fair too well either so im not worried more concerned about the defense will that confidence carry over too regular season

" QB Zaire sharp in Irish spring game"-ESPN
"Jameis Winston throws for 296 yds and 3 TDs in FSU spring game"

what the ----

What is it with Miami QBs?

Is it too much to ask to get a decent QB down here?

Plus I dont buy that the whole thing is scripted. If it were, you'd expect Olsen to throw for 450 yds and completions left and right- just like he did on the one on ones. When he didnthave to think or anything nor did he have any defenders in his face.

On the bright side, the D looked good.

We haven't recruited a good QB because our administration refuses to recruit coaching staffs that are worth anything. Culture develops from the top down.

We have recruited good QBs, its just that our coaches staffs haven't developed or elevated their incoming talent levels after signing day. Some have even regressed overall, in the last 10 years.

Elite/ready made QBs don't want to play for sub-par/inferior/on-the-job training coaching staffs. All our coaches can sell knowledgable/can't miss recruits is our past legacy. All the have to think is--what about me and the now, then the decision is simple.

The university decision making is geared towards just getting by or being just good enough to generate hope in the players and fans.

Where's the substance and sincere pursuit of excellence?

UM brand + sincerity + intelligence/skill = any recruit we want

We should be pissed, but not at each other or the players. They didn't create this new culture, they're victims of it.

The true self-imposed sanctions continue.

Winston had 396 yards, not 296.
How about hiring a REAL QB coach?
In 45 minutes of viewing I saw both QB's roll LEFT 7 times. They are right handed, so why not roll them out RIGHT?
They need to learn to take a step left, then roll right chased out of the pocket.
QB'ing 101.

The jury is still out on Al, but I agree with you that a lack of commitment to pay fair market value for top assistants..the TEACHERS..is a huge reason the players don't progress year to year.

Are out qbs that bad or is the defense finally decent? This is the same dno that made every qb look all American and our qbs are pathetic against him

First of all, this young kid Olson absolutely DOESN'T exude confidence. Ouch. And that is a major concern for a suspect Hurricane team in ' 14. hUh

FWIW... after engaging in some deep deep BLACK OPS' behind that Go BigOT RedNECK hinterlands. The vast majority of good ol' boy country pumkins be bloody well yapping about their beloved Herbie HAYSEED defense and what not. Matter of fact, according to sources CLOSE to that VULGAR, Mad Hatter Pellini. Go BIGot REDneck defense is a LEGITIMATE TOP 10 team defense this season and reminds the Herbie HAYSEED faithful of those defensive units from back in the day ( Circa 1994-1997. ) Ouch!

Can't tell if the d is better or not. They have more energy, don't know what that gives but it is.

The qb play was that bad. Crow looked better than Olsen, but that's not saying much.

Kaaya!

JSY and other LOYAL Cane fandom. Miami's current QB unit are " that BAD " and what not. Get outta' here with those negative vibes, DORK!

So here's looking at a 8-4 season, because Marky Mark is still hanging around, hanging around in Coral Gables. In other words, I just don't have confidence in Miami's defensive unit CARRYING the offense for SIX or SEVEN games. dUh

My main man HTB continues to ' keep on keeping on and speaking TRuTH to power. ' hUh

If we beat Louisville, Olsen is going to send a strong message that this season is going to be different. Till then, we can only hope our team is going to be better than last year.

@@@@@@@@

I absolutely don't SEE-r the Hurricanes defeating mighty Louisville on Labor Day night. Ouch! Oh, according to Vegas INSIDERS, the Cardinal are a... - 4 1/2 point home favorite!! dUh

Arfte what I say Saturday, Crow is the starter in my eyes. Olsen looked lifeless. Now I can't wait for Kaaya to get here. Defense looked great but against a QB that played like that. I never put Olsen down, simply worried that people were giving him to much credit for becoming a starter simply because RW got injured. Honestly hope that RW heals faster than previously stated. Gus the bus looked good and saw some good runs from him. MLewis is back to freshmen form in my eyes. DJones15 showed talent. Like what I saw from him. Though I want to see more hunger from him.

QB Play from Saturday left me disappointed and scratching my head.

Best thing I saw yesterday...

1. Defense didn't look confused, and saw an hits.

2. Sebastian can do back flips like it's nobodies business.

Overall disappointed but I got to tailgate and meet Calhoun aka the guy who tipped the ball in '83 for the first championship win against the supposedly best team ever in football. Calhoun was a great guy and a gentleman. Took bunch of photos with us.

Here's to 2014 and a winning season. GO CANES!!!!!

Sorry...auto correct. I'm at the beach with my girlfriend and her friends. Think I'll have a new girlfriend at the end of today. Hahaha.

Ahahah Miami, so much to chose from. Hannah's

GO ME, HAHAHAHAHAA

GO CANES!!!!!!

Beginning of 2014 could be rough.

@@@@@@@@@@

I second your notions with my WARPED opinion and what not.
FWIW... that Go BIGot REDneck team DIDN'T have a !! scripted !! spring scrimmage. In other words, it was a complete GAME conditions and what not.
Oh, Herbie HAYSEED 2nd and 3rd team QB's both had passing days of over SIXTY PERCENT completion and strong running games for POSITIVE yardage. Ouch. Again, those were the Go BIGot REDneck 2nd and 3rd team QB's, whom had the MAJORITY of snaps over their 1st team QB ( 1st team QB is a returning starter. )

Duke looks thicker. I hope he still has the burst.

Golden is turning this program into PSU, Duke is thicker and watch the speed disappear, Chickillo is so heavy cant beat anyone one on one, remember the speed he had coming in GONE.....WECOME TO THE BIG TEN, U FANS CAN NO LONGER BRAG ABOUT OVERALL TEAM SPEED, its one or 2 players that have speed not the whole team, they are slow that's why the D grasp at air to much muscle.... MIAMI IS KNOWN FOR WHAT>>>>>>>> SPEED KILLS>>>>>>>>>>> WELCOME TO THE BIG TEN, Remember when we always played FSU in big games, we knew we had them, the tide has turned, THEIR IS NO WAY GOLDEN AND HIS STAFF CAN OUT COACH JIMBO

Our starting QB looks like Leonardo DiCaprio in The Basketball Dairies.

What up D aka TheeMackJones.

That's the stupidest thing I ever heard about Golden trying to turn the U into the big ten. First off everyone of Alabama's running backs are at least 225-230 and they are plenty fast and strong enough to run through tackles. In today's game unless you are a spread team you have to have strength and size to compliment the speed. Ricks a moron cut from the same cloth as Macaroni Jones, Cool cat, Calvina, and Gallober, none of which know anything about the game and what it takes to build a program.

Sunshine is the new qb.

Sunshine

Wait: Marve was not a bad QB, but he was mentally weak. Wright? What did he really do? But he was good enough to be on that team and he tried.

U look to the UM teams of the past and U see speed and U see defensive players with a lot of speed. This team hasn't got it. I'm not really sure what they have in store for Chick. He is a DE. That means he rushes the passer. If the weight gain continues, then play him at DT.

Championships: Why do u think Rich Rodriguez didn't work out at U of Michigan? It's because he tried to implemented that same "speed" style at U of Michigan that he had at WVU. U cannot do with big midwestern boys what U did with mostly FL recruits and smallish type skill players. That is, in a sense, is what 'Goldy wants to do at UM. He's fixated on the strength/weight thing and U cannot do that with players that come from the Muck and from around FL. It's a recipe for doom. Don't U see that?

Look at Duke: What was Duke's weight when he first got to UM and what is it now? Look at Chick: U can still have top production in players like Duke and Chick w/out the massive weight gain.

Listen, dumbsht,

If duke johnson doesnt put 10 more lbs even the nfl may not like him, and if they do he may not last 3 seasons. Devonta freeman was just told the other day heneeded to get bigger for the nfl

Pleas just stfu you dont know sht about football

Look a how many big ten teams were in the to ten, top 15 last yr. That will tell you a lot about how stoopid you and calvin are.

And now, miami has not recruted good qbs. Otherwise theyd be good no matter what. Jacorry harris, kyle wright LOST games.

Gimme an effen break

Please recruit qbs that have at least half an iq. Make them take the wonderlic, bc the last 5 qbs weve had have been football duma55es

How many NC the big 10 has won in the past 20-30 years?

Our last 5 QBs were 4 and 5 star recruits and Mr. Footballs of their respective states.

If they've all been dumb55es, then there must be a direct correlation to their coaches at UM being so as well. They didn't come to UM dumb.

First off all you had to do was look a Jacory and that would tell anybody how dumb he is. Harris was a three star guy, and so was Morris as was Gray Crow. So just where is it that you see these four and five stars? Olsen has been the highest rated star QB that we have signed until this year with Kaaya. And Harris's best year was under Golden anyway. Olsen just had one bad game and all some of you want to do is act like he is a bust. And it was a spring game at that. Is he the answer who knows but the kid is just starting out.

I wish the Cane players were as ecited and enthusiastic about playing the game of Football as they are about stupid new uniforms.

Such a Pee-Wee and High School Football mentality. It starts at the top.

Cool cat, Rich Rod's offense for your information did work at Ann Arbor, it was his defense that did not perform well enough. Plus you had those same dumb@hit morons up there like some on here who think that there is only one way to do things. And the hell with the muck, it is proven fact that you have to be fast as well as physically strong enough to be an upper echelon team nationally. And a recipe for doom was hiring Coker and Shannon, now that is a recipe for a screw up

Ill respond to richmond first:

Michigan in 1997
Penn state beat us in 1986
Ohio state in 2002 beat us

Along the way, they played in others: ohio state for the title in 2006, and you also have to take in co sideration that there have been some very good big ten teams that were alwyas in contention: michigan state, wiscosin, iowa.

Wiskie beat um not long ao
Iowa beat florida in the outback bowl a few yrs ago.

.........

Harriet

Thats right
Kyle wright was all evryhing gatorade hs player of the year. Recruited by coker. Bust
Kirby freeman was also highly recruited out of texas, i believe 4 star bc of his running ability
Marve was florida mr footba
Jacorry was florida mr football
Tyler cook or whatever...
The fedex founders kid...
Preston dewey

All busts who couldnt read defenses, make decisions in the pocket or execute consistently

Im sorry, but without a decent qb, no Cfb team will be competitive

Jacory was a 4 star in every publication the year he committed to UM.

When we talk "last 5 QBs" of course we mean the ones who are highly sought after with clear expectations to play and lead the team for 3 or 4 seasons. Not the roster filler dudes 2 and 3 star: Cannon, Cook, Dewey, Crow, Williams, etc..

I ain't watched the spring game yet but from the comments young Olsen needs to do a better job of "owning the process" (whatever the he77 that is) over the next 4.5 months!!

Btw since the Mac .500 showed up in the Gables the qb's have been the least of the problems! But they're blamed the most by the golden shower drinkers. The kids are the ones that actually put their minds and bodies on the line but are the least appreciated!

Figure that!

Good to see D macjones spittin game ...

Coley is the new OC and he's the talent evaluator now. Let's see what he does. This is the first full recruiting season under the current regime.

Olsen will bounce back. He has a gunslinger mentality and I think if he learns the offense and settles down he'll be fine. I still believe in him, but i'm eager to see Kaaya do his thing.

I wouldn't put my hopes in a true frosh at QB....

Some kids have it.

That's wild to say the hell with the muck. You got have players from the muck to win a championship ion the state of Fla. I hate them not running the 4-3 like we are suppossed to they can play a New England Pittsburgh type 3-4 and be a good defense. I just don't have any faith in their playcalling and scheme that they are running. This sets up perfect for the defense to have to win games for us. If they don't get it this year on defense they probably never will. We need to cut our losses if it doesn't work out this year on defense.

Qb back play is paramount for us having a good season as well. We will be young but hey how bad can it get. We have been virtually non existent in the bcs any way so. Richmond heights said it best no technique, no spacing no angles no positions no communication no pre snap adjustments no nothing. Just we need to get bigger stronger and faster. On defense. What about being smarter and knowing what play their gone run before they call it? It's like we are flying around on defense leaving gaping holes in it. We need to run the ball and keep the qb throwing 15-18 times a game.30-40 rushes a game

I agree theyneed to pound the rock NFL stylewith Tucker, Edwards and Duke 30 times a game. That limits thenumberof offensive possesions the opponents get (as long as we dont turn the ball over), and therefore opens up OUR passing game . NOT THE OTHER WAY AROUND!!!!

Lately it was throw a bomb on first from the 20. Incomplete pass. Second and ten. Run theball for 3 yds. #rd and 7 from the 23. Pass downfield incomplete. punt.

That ^^^^ has put major pressure on the defense. By the 3rd q they are spent due to the horrendous time ofpossesion. Stephen Morris was terrible at consitently keeping drives alive, but the OC has a lot to blame as well.

Some of the best running teams in college football (in the SEC, Wisconsin etc) run the ball 25-35 times a game. With Tucker and Edwards you all know what that does to a defense? Then you take their heart withDuke breaking a couple out a game, and that opens theplay action.

Its that simple. Coley would be stupid and I willcall for his job if he puts it all on his young inexperienced QBs to manage a game.

championships is all that matters,

Harris best year was under the previous OC, to include Morris. If Golden was the reason, Morris would have performed better...in my opinion. Golden is a defensive coach by development via Boston College and Virginia. By the way, if we really look closely to the most successful HCs in college, the majority had great staffs who went on to become a HC.

Why is Olsen getting all this attention? He has not taken one D1 snap. Please open up all the positions for competition, and don't allow favoritism to continue to be a cancer with this football program. Each player should enter camp fighting for a starting position, and the coaching staff need to emphasize continuously that they are 1 play from being a backup.

I thought Jacory and Morris were the best QB, but they made decisions that negatively impacted the team momentum at times. TH3 made some good INTs, but he missed too many tackles. Highsmith and Rodgers were not effective at safety, but allowed to get a lot of snaps. Burns and Carter should have been given those snaps from my observation. Chic has not been the same since his initial season, and I believe it has to do with scheme and change in his body composition.

I will continue to express my concerns with this offensive system. If we are going to run the pro-set, please hire a QB coach. Get rid of the TE coach position. The TE position is a combination of lineman and WR, which both have coaches. If we are not going to invest in a QB coach, then why recruit pro-set QBs? This type of player is vital to the overall effectiveness of the offensive scheme. We have too many weapons at WR and RB to be a ball control style offense. Spread the defense out, make the proper reads, and get the ball out quick to the play makers: Duke, Coley, Waters, Dorsett, Mitchell, Gus, TEs, and FBs,etc. Who ever can make the timely decisions...should be the starting QB (aka Dorsey).
