Hurricanes land huge commitment from Killian 4-star safety Jaquan Johnson

The Hurricanes landed one of the most prized safety recruits in the nation Tuesday night when Miami Killian's Jaquan Johnson called coaches to inform them he was committing to their 2015 signing class.

Johnson (5-11, 192) is rated a four-star prospect by 247Sports.com and the ninth best safety in the nation. He's a three-time All-Dade First Team selection and a U.S. Army All-American.

Johnson told The Miami Herald last week his top five college choices were Miami, Florida, Florida State, South Carolina and Louisville and that he might be making a decision soon. He also told The Herald he planned on taking official visits to LSU, Alabama and Louisville during the season.

There is no word yet if he still plans to, but Killian coach Cory Johnson said Jaquan, no relation, told him Johnson informed UM coaches "Coral Gables is where he plans to play his college football."

"He's going to walk in there trying to be the man right away," Cory Johnson said.

Johnson missed the first four games of his junior season at Killian last year with a lower back injury. He said he contemplated having surgery to shave a disc in his back but decided against it. Johnson said he still experiences some tightness in his back.

Johnson finished his junior season with 75 tackles, an interception, five fumble recoveries and eight catches for 122 yards and three scores. As a sophomore he collected 94 tackles, 7 INTs and ran 88 times for 646 yards and 17 touchdowns. As a freshman he had 45 tackles, two forced fumbles, 1 blocked field goal, 417 yards rushing and eight rushing touchdowns. He also scored on two touchdown catches.

"One thing I know about Quan is if you put the ladder up six feet higher than he can reach he's going to find a way to climb it," coach Johnson said. "He'll go as high as he can to get to the top of that ladder."

The Hurricanes have 23 commitments in the 2015 signing class. Johnson is one of six who is considered a four-star recruit.
