Hurricanes looking to establish depth at linebacker in camp

Hurricanes defensive coordinator Mark D'Onofrio opened camp Tuesday feeling the best he has ever felt regarding depth on the defensive line and in the secondary.

"Last year I don't think we had a stretch where we had more than three healthy safeties available," D'Onofrio said. "Now I'm looking at six guys and I'm no longer forced to play two of the young ones.

"We have some options at that nose tackle position between Earl [ Moore]. Calvin [ Heurtelou], who was here in the spring, [freshman] Cortel [Jenkins] and [junior college signee] Mike Wyche. The competition is really going to make everybody better."

Linebacker? That's another story. The dismissals of Alex Figueroa and JaWand Blue last month following their arrests on sexual battery have made developing depth at linebacker D'Onofrio's top priority in camp.

"I felt like we had seven guys coming out of the spring," he said. "Now we've got to go back and find No. 6, 7, and 8. That's going to be my focus. Just trying to figure out who the best combination of guys are on the field, particularly in passing situations."

After seniors Denzel Perryman (middle), Thurston Armbrister (strong side) and junior Raphael Kirby (weak side), there isn't a whole lot in the way of playing experience. D'Onofrio said 6-2, 210-pound sophomore Jermaine Grace, the team's fastest at the position, is currently fourth in his eyes on the depth chart but freshman Darrion Owens (6-3, 236) is coming on strong.

Tuesday, sophomore Walter Tucker, who spent most of last season and the spring as a fullback after being first recruited as a linebacker, was back taking snaps at linebacker. D'Onofrio said junior Tyriq McCord, who plays the rush linebacker position in the team's 3-4 formation, has strong-side experience and will be used there "while we develop other guys."

"There are going to be some guys that get shots early, and we're going to look at different combinations there," D'Onofrio said. "It will be good. We'll have competition. We've made some adjustments, made some moves. We'll work through it."

THIS AND THAT

What was senior defensive end Anthony Chickillo's first thoughts when he heard about the arrests and dismissals of two teammates on charges of sexual battery last month?

"Our thoughts were all with the victim and her family," he said. "Obviously, a huge mistake was made."

New defensive tackle Michael Wyche, signed out of East Los Angeles Junior College this summer, has already shed 10 pounds since his arrival to drop down to 6-4, 340 pounds. He's also established himself as a force in the weight room.

Wyche bench-pressed 225 pounds (the NFL Combine testing standard) a total 35 times, good for second on the team behind Corey King's 37 reps. Wyche said coaches want him to play at 335 pounds.

"I'm more about the action than talking, so I can't wait to get out there and just try to make some plays and learn about the defense," Wyche said.

Former basketball player turned tight end Raphael Akpejiori said he spent the summer working with former Hurricanes Jimmy Graham and Santana Moss on route-running and catching.

"At first I was getting jammed a lot [in 7-on-7s]," he said. "I didn't know how to get a release. But I've been doing pretty well so far. I've been finding myself open a lot. I dropped a few balls, but I think I caught more than I dropped. It's been great. "

5 QBs competing and one side-lined with a surgically repaired knee. Hurricanes Renewed! How about Signal Caller Needed!

"Kelly, named Florida State defensive coordinator during the offseason, has received a new three-year contract worth $500,000 per year according to documents released Tuesday by FSU".

We are the champions, my friends,
And we'll keep on fighting 'til the end.
We are the champions.
We are the champions.
No time for losers
'Cause we are the champions of the world.

Whoever starts at QB, just guide the ship, don't force things, don't try to make a big play, (unless it's actually there), you have the horses to help you, use them, and damnit if no one's open launch it out of bounds.

Tony Bosch, 50, who bought his drugs on the black market and often injected athletes personally, enjoyed a lavish lifestyle on the proceeds from his Biogenesis of America wellness clinic, which operated from 2009 to 2012 out of a strip plaza a short distance from the University of Miami campus in Coral Gables.

He was aided, prosecutors said, by Lazer Collazo, a well-known former longtime University of Miami assistant baseball coach who allegedly brought Bosch young hopefuls yearning for added muscle. The young clients paid $250 to $600 for performance-enhancing drugs, without any of them being seen by a licensed doctor.

.

Well it's a good thing the University of Miami did their own investigation into this onion that's about to unpeal... The names will come out soon. []_[] stay tuned now ya hear.

Cane's players are all over this and soon will be exposed for the cheaters that they are... Just like the A. FRA[]_[]D ch[]_[]mp whose name adores ur bandbox stadium.

You said the same thing about Nevin, Pig, and nothing came of it.

If, as you claim, the stench of a murderer does not attach to a UFilth grad, then how is the stench of a PED peddler going to attach to Miami? Because his office as a few blocks away? BWWWHAHAHAHAHAHAH. Yeah, let's count the number of meth trailers within 3 blocks of the UFilth campus. They should shut that dump down.

We are only 1 month and 5 days away from the 1 year anniversary of your chin-quivering, limp-wristed sob story on 9-11 Marines/ Gainesvillian/Miamian/UFilthian.

Can't wait to march that out again, you stupid slob.

Too bad he is supposed to play football but the clueless coaches think it is a weight lifting competition.

Errrr, Pig? yeah, you, ID changing Pig. You can' hide. It's like trying to hide a whale under a bed sheet.

5 years ago the complaint was the team was too weak and was getting pushed around (remember Oklahoma in Norman or KSU a few years later?). Now, you complain they are too strong.

Make up your mind, maggot.

Manny and Susan:
Good stuff.
It's great to be back on the football field.

Our 'Canes are very poised for depth, rotation and experience on the O.

As far as LB's and the D, we need to develop depth so the experience of McCord, DP, Armbrister, Kirby, Chick all have to step up and carry the D as our depth is lacking. Hopefully Grace, Owens, Wyche coming in will maintain our play and provide the spark in games to take it to the next level.

Conditioning is the key, and the weather in SoFla can help and also hurt us. We need an Indoor facility more than ever so that we can put the time in. Great to study film but the field is where the work is done in turning study into reality. The big guys have to play and play hard and long to keep up the momentum in games at 90+ degrees on the field.
Looking forward to a more balanced, conditioned, and deeper team this year, and from your interviews it seems we are starting in the right mode.
Great interviews, and keep up the good work.
Go 'Canes

Jeez dude, you gotta be strong to shed blockers and get to the qb, or stuff the run. What do you want him to be fat n slow?? Let's see what the kid can do before you pass judgment on him. Let's see what the ENTIRE D can do before you pass judgment. Damn get excited for the new season and new players, and (hopefully) new defensive schemes. You guys are about as positive as a nuclear war, I mean jeez lueez.

Every single season there's a new free agent signee that hasn't been developed by our coaching staff and who is hyped to be the difference-maker or savior of weakest unit on the team. This season its Wyche and Heaps. I don't believe Heaps is better than Olsen myself. Its wait and see on Wyche.

It is being reported on Rivals.com that Al Golden will be offered the Penn State job.

If he says yes...say goodbye to the UM football program.

Posted by: Ron Zook/Nothing But Blue Skies | January 02, 2014 at 07:05 PM

A Golden fan, not a UM fan.

I rest my case.

Just like the media is.

The success of UM football on the field is second priority.

I've not seen where Heaps is 'hyped' as a difference maker Tubby. All I've seen is that he's an (experienced) alternative, since Williams went down, and Olsen being stupid. Who knows, if the kid gets a chance to start, he may end up putting on a clinic, simply because he knows it's his last chance, and (sometimes) that brings out the best in people. Maybe not, maybe he'll get crushed, who knows, but nowhere have I seen he's billed as a 'difference maker'. It's more of a 'hope' than anything else.

Errrr, Pig? yeah, you, ID changing Pig. You can' hide. It's like trying to hide a whale under a bed sheet.
----
Well, he IS a whale, stuffed into a trailer in methville, but he can't afford a luxury like a BEDSHEET! Heck, he can't afford a BED, that is why he posts here at 3AM, he has nothing to do after he polishes his three inch trolling trophy. He is really proud of that trophy, not a day goes by that he isn't polishing it, three minutes at a time.

All I can hope for is a 10-2 regular season win. Hopefully we can finally win a bowl this year. For some reason I think Brad Kayaa is going to lead the ship when it comes down to playing our toughest rivals. LB depth will be fine and everyone of those guys will be on point. Denzel is going to lead them like Ray Lewis did his troops in Baltimore. Herb Waters and Phillip Dorsett, Stacy Coley, Rashawn Scott, Standish Dobard, Clive Walford, Malcom Lewis, Bo Sandland, Tyre Brady......Everytime the ball is thrown your way fight for it. Go at it and come down with it. We need a Micheal Irvin on the field at all times.

Every single season there's a new free agent signee that hasn't been developed by our coaching staff and who is hyped to be the difference-maker or savior of weakest unit on the team.
----
I don't know about hyped, but if there is a weak unit on the team and someone can step in rather than just accept that weakness, then I am all for it. Didn't Jimmy Graham step in to fill a weakness on our team? That worked for us and for him, it isn't like it is unprecedented.

I'll take that its more "hope" with Heaps, but Wyche is being hyped just like the transfer defensive linemen from Virginia and Wisconsin last season Cokehead Cane.

^^^^^^^^^

Neither Gilbert nor Renfro were "hyped" dope. All that was talked about was that they were providing depth.

But they sure put a pasting on that banjo-playing QB from UFilth so, you know, from a Gatr Trash point of view, hey lived up to the "hype."

"Didn't Jimmy Graham step in to fill a weakness on our team?"

No he didn't. All he did was drop catchable balls in that FSU game. In fact as a cane he didn't do squat, no game winning catches, no games he dominated. He was learning on the job. That is why he has a late round draft pick taken on potential only.

"the transfer defensive linemen from Virginia and Wisconsin last season "

Yep those were hyped in the pre season as saviors. Where are they now? What are their names?
Just like Muhammed was supposed to provide instant pass rush last year as a frosh. Didn't happen.

Now it's Whyche and Chad Thomas.
Maybe this is the year.
Probably not. Thomas would red shirt in any of the top programs in the nation, not here.

Heaps? A stop gag at best. Might as well go with Kaaya from day one and take our chances.

Too bad I can't help the kids no more with my medicine.

Thomas won't redshirt because we NEED HELP on DL. I mean you saw them last yr. Agree on Heaps, that's all he is, but he does have experience, but again who knows, he may end up being awesome? Thomas is ready to play now, and I'm betting he'll show it against UL.

The question wasn't whether improvements are a good thing or not (of course it is). It was whether preseason hype of players and the routine dependence on the waiver wire is a formula for success on the football field of play. Jimmy Graham didn't develop under Golden, so there's no precedent of these late arrivals making a difference under his tutelage. Graham had 17 rec for 213 yards in his only season at UM.

Irvin and Lewis are successful because of their personalities/attitudes/passion. I don't see that fire in Denzel or those WRs named. A great leader could possibly ignite it as the HCs did that they were both exposed to. But when your HC is an opportunist, then U get comments like Duke made (we'll be cool with or without him). No one is running threw a door for Golden, when he'll only run threw a door for D'No himself. The passion must be more than words and must be reciprocated. Nothing endears a player towards their HC than the feeling that what they are being directed to do, is making them a better person and football player. When players like Earl Moore and Jelani Hamilton go thru U-Tough for 3 seasons and a JUCO or transfers continually takes their time and is hyped by the staff (majority of practices are closed so the info we receive is usually the info provided by the staff--who is looking good etc), thats deflating.

Having something "positive" to say is subjective and I'm not under your jurisdiction. U don't see me sitting up and judging the content of your posts do U. Get over yourself. Having something positive to say doesn't provide the desired results does it. Ignoring the truth and living in hopeland for 12 seasons straight is the definition of insanity. I'll leave "having something positive to say" to those who are *paid* to have something positive to say (the beat writers), thats not a rule of the comments section--its free speech down here. Where are your posts that ask Zook, MP, GKC if they have anything balanced to say (encompassing of justifiable criticism or critique)?

Harrietta just a hater. that's what haters do----hate.

She just spends more time trying to justify the nonsense she spews. When called out ---- like her assertion that the admin flew the plane over the OB to ditch Butch----she says it was a joke or you just can't understand the lofty plane she is operating from.

Just a hater and a foo.

You know damn good n well I ALWAYS ask you, Calvin, many others, why you CONSTANLY post the same sheet? It just boggles the mind, and I find it very odd, that you NEVER have anything good to say about a team you SUPPPOSEDLY root for. If you don't like the coaching, then so be it, but you guys never even have anything remotely good to say about players either. I mean it's like you come on the blogs to either convince other posters to come over to your way of thinking, or you have to constantly remind yourselves of the things you posted a week ago. You guys seem to think you're the only ones who know the Canes weakness, but thing is, we ALL know, and ALL hope each year will be better than the one before it, instead of the incessant berating, and stating the obvious. You guys have the season in the toilet before it's even begun.

Cola, the answer to your first line question is the haters come here to foster turmoil and negativity. The are not fans but haters.

Never said it was a joke. Your only post are those opposed to mine. Without me U don't exist--now thats what hating is. U benefit from me--leech status. That post about the planes was a documented response to the assertion that the fans flew those planes. U and Zook are yet to prove his ridiculous initial post factual and/or prove my response untrue. "Called out" what is that when U aren't proving ish. Y'all man slurpers. Y'all could never call me out on nothing…..ever. U are my son.

I read you GKC!!!!

Of course U do only ask half of the argument, THAT WAS MY POINT NUMBNUT. Can U read and comprehension simple English? That is your opinion, I said I'm excited about Gus Edwards. I said the secondary is much improved. I SAID, "UM will beat Louisville in a close game, and the key will be Coley riding our RB unit". And many other posts that you've selectively missed to justify your hate. Lets check the sequence of events that play out routinely everyday, even today, just look above:

1) I comment about UM football.
2) Some responding by talking UM football
3) Others respond with name-calling ("Tubby") and complaining about the content of the post because the disagree and cite some biased frequency criteria for the amount of critique post can have in them---all subjective.

U are part of the problem U keep railing and whining about sir. Have a seat your bias shines thru every time the sun rises without fail.

Harriet is a woman's name, there's no need to add an "a" to the end for insult purposes.

Saget jokes running on "E".

Yeah, you are not judging his posts, but you toss around insults like Cokehead Cane. Judging a man to be addicted to Cocaine is just that, judging him.

Oh, and guess what, we aren't under YOUR "jurisdiction", either, blog cop. You might as well accept that we can tell the truth about you and your rehashed four year old comments, even when you don't like it.

Harriet Tubman was more man than U are or ever will be as a Cokehead Cane.

Your timeline is flawed.
1. you post a cheap shot about our transfers coming in.
2. you post a cheap shot at another poster, based on an eight month old comment.
3. you post a cheap shot at the media, because you never have documentation to back up your "read behind the lines" claims.

THEN, someone calls out your lie in post 1, your shot in post 2 gets ignored, because it is old news, and nobody feels like defending the media in post 3. Yet you assume any disagreement with you means they are defending blue skies, the media, oj simpson, and al golden.

Your jurisdiction does not include this claim to the high road....

So blinded by *true* "hating" that U can't observe the obvious sequence of events that I already detailed and that are available by just scrolling downwards. Maybe U should get a new person to cut those eye holes in that hood.

Cola called me "Tubby" so I responded by twist his name into an insult. Are U retarded? Then why can't U see that? Do U scroll the blog bottom to the top lol!

As far as jurisdiction, I don't complain about the content of posts that don't personally attack me. U are just talking, the sequence of events replays itself here every single day. Sorry U are so butthurt about it.

Never said SHE wasn't, just find it odd that a MAN uses a WOMAN's name as part of HIS screen name is all.

Miami isn’t ranked—though the program did receive 45 votes in the coaches poll—yet teams with worse 2013 records like Ole Miss (8-5), Kansas State (8-5), North Carolina (7-6) and Texas (8-5) are ranked. The Longhorns didn’t even win their bowl game and Mack Brown resigned. So what gives?

How will the Hurricanes stack up against Florida State?

The Hurricanes have some pieces to be excited about and the media picked them to win the ACC’s Coastal Division and play Florida State for the conference championship for a reason. Their first game is against conference newbie Louisville, who beat them in the Russell Athletic Bowl last season, but has a new coach and quarterback. Its first real test after that is on Sept. 20 on the road against No. 22 Nebraska. Miami should be able to manage most of its schedule after that until the showdown with top-ranked FSU at home on Nov. 15.

DO YOU BELIEVE THIS BLAH, BLAH NONSENSE? Dark Skies From Now On!

Look! Let me set everyone straight about UM's season right now.

They win! barely against against Louisville in the opener because Louisville fails to play 8 in the box to stop the run.
Fans get excited and these boards explode!
At Nebraska, UM gets a beatdown! because unlike Louisville, Bo Pelini knows UMs QBs are very pedestrian and couldn't hit the broad side of a barn! contains the run and solves UM Offense.

They rebound and beat up all their non-conference patsies!

They win more than they lose! get into the rankings---they have a letdown against a team they should beat.

Then finally UM faces off here against FSU. Where Golden has allowed them to come into our house before and pound us.

We get a really good spanking! to let us know just how far we have to go.
The print media begins to point out how lopsided the series with FSU has become. Golden avoids direct questions about FSU, reminding all he is competing against himself and building the program brick by brick.

There's a difference between a lie and an opinion. I actually agreed with Cola and said that Heaps overage is based in |hope' instead of"hype". So the picture U are attempting to paint is smearing.

That poster does the same thing to me and U NEVER complain or attempt to admonish him or anyone else for doing so, so why don't U take the "higher road" and begin to practice what U preach? It wasn't a cheap sht, its what he said, the post proves everything I say about y'all golden fans, just like the media, U see a difference between Golden and UM football. He said UM football is nothing without Al Golden--I rest my case. Y'all are fake Cane fans and lames…period.

When is there documentation to back up "read between the lines" claims??? Isn't that the whole point of reading between the lines? The lines that are provided have been compromised by the influence of money. now U understand why there's a comments section. I feel like a elementary school teacher.

Dudes always complain about me detailing the obvious, but they NEVER understand the obvious. So whats the true hang up? Y'all want to silence the truth so U can wallow in systemic hope--over a decade and counting…lame.

Thanks for the FUTURE update Rabble, now we can all just not bother watching or rooting for the team.

Tubby said the plane was a UM admin plane. It obviously wasn't, unless she has facts that no one else has produced. Just a trouble maker and a liar.

No one needs to prove your assertion that it was an admin plane. It wasn't until you prove it was. Nothing will be forthcoming some don't heat up that pea brain of yours.

Well I find it odd that U name yourself after a soft drink that used to have literal coke in it lol! Is your name in some way better than mine?

Tubman freed the slaves she said: "I freed a thousand slaves, but I would have freed thousands more if only they knew that were slaves." That quote is the motivation for my name. It reminds me of many Canes fans wink wink.

Because people have a little thing called HOPE, doesn't mean they don't understand the OBVIOUS Ms. Tubman. In fact when you post pretty much NOTHING but the obvious, how could we ever forget it? You choose to wallow in last yr, or the yr before, or the yr before that, and many of us choose to look at a new season as a new CHANCE at something better. I mean if you're so down on the team and coaching staff, why even bother posting? Why not find a team that meets your criteria?

Sorry GKC but you've posted this same misrepresentation of the sequence of events how many times now. The burden of proof is on the person who brought it up accusing the fans--not the respond to his accusations. Nothing U insult--changes that. Where are his facts?

If he substantiates his claims--it disproves my assertions completely correct? Then why won't he or U? Thats the point of contention son.

Saying "its obvious" is not enough…sorry.

this is a similar exercise to telling a child that Santa isn't real. U are gonna get a tantrum.

I understand guys--here's a pillow, but there's no tooth under it…oops.

It is being reported on Rivals.com that Al Golden will be offered the Penn State job.

If he says yes...say goodbye to the UM football program.

I don't care when he said it. No Cane fan would ever say this. Its the epitome disgracefulness and man worship ala Gator fans with Tebow/Urban Liar.

Not one of y'all said a thing in response--including U Cola. always talking about who is a Cane and who isn't, but this comment goes untouched. U have zero credibility as a Cane fan if this comment doesn't bother U…ZERO!

Cola, both Al Golden fans and UM fans can root for Miami on Labor Day night. It's an opportunity for everyone to witness Bobby Petrino's in-game prowess at work, and at work, and see how Al Golden's in-game coaching stacks up by comparison. Al Golden is a top five collegiate recruiter, no one debates that. However, when it comes to X's & O's Al Golden has a way to go before he measures up to the Steve Spurriers of the world. On Labor Day night Bobby Petrino Will draw a sharp contrast between what X's & O's mastery is, and what Al Golden isn't i.e., a good in-game coach.
