How is a mojito different from a mint julep?

Julep      In reply to my item last Sunday about Mint Juleps, Suzanne L. messages to ask:
“Dumb question. Is a mojito the same thing as a mint julep, just made with rum?”

Suzanne, there are no dumb questions about drinks. And hopefully no dumb answers.

Let’s see. According to Drinksmixer.com, a mint julep, pictured at left, contains mint, powdered sugar, water and bourbon, while a mojito, pictures at right, has mint, lime juice, rum and, sometimes club soda. Mojito_2

So they’re pretty close. I think the tart lime juice is what saves the mojito from cloying.

In any case, gimme an ultra-dry martini any day.

      Cheers, Fred
