Michael Bittel’s Sunset Corners shop is your friendly stop for zingy zinfandel, spicy shiraz and, now, tasty tomatoes.
The other day, he and his wife went looking for really flavorful tomatoes for a salad, couldn’t find them in supermarkets, and ended up getting them at a South Dade farmer’s market.
A light went off above Michael’s head, and now he’s helping to sponsor a “produce subscription market” along with Teena Borak, of Teena’s Pride Produce in the Redland.
Customers would pay $40 a week for a big box of whatever veggies are ready that week and pick them up on Thursdays at Sunset Corners. A typical box might contain arugula, fresh herbs, hydroponic bell peppers, hot peppers and, of course, those tasty heirloom tomatoes.
If you want to try the plan, call Teena at 305-378-9297 or 305-216-2336 or go to sbfinc@teenaspride.com.
Michael’s not making any money on the plan. He just figures that, if you’re eating good food, you’ll want to buy some good wine.

A rich red wine goes well with tomatoes. With tomato acid content so high, a wine with low acid and malolactic fermentaiton would pair well.
