Lou Dobbs' replacement: John King

John King, who hosts CNN's Sunday-morning State of the Union, will take over the time slot vacated when Johnking Lou Dobbs quit the network Wednesday. King will launch a new 7 p.m. show on politics in January. King has proven himself a canny and tenacious interviewer on the Sunday show -- his guests have included President Obama, Dick Cheney, Robert Gates, Colin Powell, Mikhail Gorbachev and practically everybody who's anybody in Congress -- and his new program will also concentrate on newsmaker interviews.

King, a former Associated Press reporter, joined CNN in 1997. He spearheaded the network's election coverage in 2008 and was the acknowledged master of the network's so-called Magic Wall, a computerized video display that had more secret surprises than a truckload of Cracker Jacks. Now the question is, can he make it turn up some Nielsen ratings? CNN has been running third among cable news channels during the 7 p.m. hour.
