Why ABC will have to cancel 'V' and 'FlashFoward'

Fearless prediction: Next month, ABC bosses will cancel their sci-fi shows FlashForward and V. Second Flashforward2 fearless prediction: They'll blame you for it. They'll say you're too stupid and attention-deficited to pay attention to highly serialized show, and that's why there were no ratings. Third fearless prediction: There will be no mention at all that both shows were doing well in the ratings until ABC put them on four-month breaks.

V and FlashFoward are both imaginative shows about global catrastrophe -- an invasion by carnivorous space aliens in one case, a worldwide blackout that kills millions of people in the other -- that are rife with the sort of conspiracy and paranoia that drives the best suspense novels. Each of them debuted last fall with audiences in the double-digit millions. And then, as Christmas approached, ABC shelved them both until April.

The result -- predictable to anybody who doesn't work as a network programmer -- is that viewers lost their sense of urgency, forgot the plot details that drive the suspense genre, and just generally moved on. V this week drew a paltry 5.9 million viewers, and FlashForward dipped so low (to five million viewers) that it dragged ABC down into a fourth-place tie with The CW for Thursday night.

I don't understand why more shows don't use the 24 model, where you start the damn things in January and run one every week without these ridiculous hiatuses. I had trouble enough caring about Glee after four months (the Vogue video sealed it, however).

STOP WITH THE CRAPPY SHOWS AND LETS HAVE SOME THINK LIKE THE BBC CAN BRING ON. daliya robson

I WONDER WHO DETERMINES THE IQ OF THE VIEWERS. are your program writers and directors people the same ones that failed elementary school. We are not all limited. Please put some subtelty and intelligence into t any prams you create. We dont need blood and explosions and guns to be entertained. We dont need big breasted women with high heels either. JUST REAL PEOPLE situations .Perhaps you do this so the advertisemnets are comparitively more enterntaining so we watch those and get fat being directed to junk food

Nick

Abc should never have attempted this shallow attempt at V, Ken johnson already has plans in motion to bring it back, it is afterall his creation, I hope abc's travesty gets cancelled and soon.

Marc

So the fact that even in its 10 ep run last FAll, FF lost viewers every single wqeek, while critics ripped it had nothing to do with it.

It's all ABC's fault. Right

If ABC didnt removre it for a few month, I think the eps would have been an even bigger mess.

FF's failure fall clearly on its execution. Sorry

I'm afraid that Glee's success after a similarly long hiatus makes me suspicious of your argument. A show that is failing will fail more. A show that is succeeding will only whet appetites.

Jung

Um, if any of you have read a paper over the last 6 months, the reason behind these shows being delayed is not solely the network's responsibility. For instance, FF...they replaced showrunners THREE TIMES. How in the hell can any episodes be produced when that happens?

Kermit

V is worse now, not better since the break. FlashForward better at least wrap its story before departing or I won't forgive ABC for that.

Glee is absolutely awful incidentally.

Doug

I watched both, but gave up. With FF, I was about 5 episodes in, then just lost interest because there was very little interesting about the show. With V, it was similar. Watched 2 episodes into the spring run, then stopped caring.

Marc is right about FF - ratings were dismal by the end of last fall, and the show was clearly on the wrong track. As for V, ratings were good, but the show needed new show runners, so the hiatus was a necessity. Instead of blaming ABC or the viewers, the blame clearly resides with the show runners, who took two interesting ideas and executed them poorly.

Well for one, listen to that annoying background music. Its on all the time, and its so loud u almost cant hear what the actors are saying anymore..
Makes shows really cheap..

Al123

I like V-tried to watch FF but I couldn't stay awake or hang in there. But, I'm hooked on V-except when I see the actor's turn bluer than the backround when they're doing a scene on the mothership-then I knew they were using the blue screen or green screen technique. I took away some of the believability of the scene!

SCOTT

PLEASE DONT CANCEL THIS SHOW... I TOTALLY ENJOY WATCHING IT... IT MAY BE "FAKE", BUT ATLEAST ITS INTERESTING... ATLEAST TO ME ANYWAY....

Umar

ahh don't do that! they're the only good things on tv in the UK! lol

Lesa McKee

I enjoy watching V, even if it is a little choppy. I love that they brought this beloved franchise back! Please don't cancel it. The cast is first rate and I would love to see where the story line is going!!!
