Video: Fights, unruly crowds bring out the cops on South Beach

BY CHRISTINA VEIGA, cveiga@MiamiHerald.com

Miami Beach police responded to “multiple fights” that broke out in a massive crowd on the sand between Sixth and Eighth streets during Presidents' Day.

Detective Vivian Hernandez said police “asked for several officers to respond to the area.” She wasn’t sure how many people were involved. She estimated the crowd to include up to 2,000 people.

“We have large crowds that gathered up on the beach from the holiday,” Hernandez said.

Monday was a holiday and many people were off of work and from school.

The detective said huge masses are typical this time of year, as the spring break season kicks off.
