Former Hialeah mayor critically hurt in I-95 crash

Former Hialeah Mayor Julio Martinez is in critical condition at a Miami hospital after a serious accident while helping a friend change a tire on Interstate 95, authorities said.
Martinez, 71, was hospitalized in critical condition at Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital on Tuesday afternoon after a man lost control of his 2011 black Honda Accord and hit several cars, including the former mayor's red Mercedes.
JulioAt the time of the crash, Martinez was standing between his car and the truck of his friend George Morffiz. The impact threw the former mayor several feet above the pavement, said his wife, Xiomara Martinez.
The Honda  was driven by Joseph Domenic Leo, of West Palm Beach, who was traveling in the south on I-95 near Northwest 95th Street, according to the police report. Like Martinez, Morffiz was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital, but was discharged on Monday.
"The accident happened shortly after 1 pm and the driver apparently lost control of the Honda," said Joe Sanchez, spokesman for the Florida Highway Patrol.
