GLAAD Call To Action: "John Gibson Cruelly Mocks Heath Ledger’s Death"

News release:

In the wake of Heath Ledger's death, people around the world are mourning the gifted actor's passing and are expressing their appreciation for how he changed hearts and minds with his Oscar-nominated role as a gay cowboy in 2005's Brokeback Mountain.

John_pub_photo_150In a stark and disturbing contrast, Fox News Radio host John Gibson, pictured, cruelly mocked Ledger's death and his role in Brokeback Mountain during his Jan. 22 John Gibson Show radio broadcast.  During the show, Gibson played an audio clip from the film of Jake Gyllenhaal's character, Jack, telling Ennis (played by Ledger), "I wish I knew how to quit you." Gibson then coldly quipped, "Well, he found out how to quit you."  Then, after playing another audio clip from the movie of Ledger's character saying, "We're dead," Gibson mockingly said, "We're dead" and played the clip again.

"Gibson's remarks are vulgar and disgusting,'' said Rashad Robinson, GLAAD's Senior Director of Media Programs. "It's sickening that Gibson would exploit Heath Ledger's tragic death to promote such hurtful intolerance. And to do so at a time when family and friends are grieving shows a level of insensitivity that is beyond the pale.''

Beyond his mockery of Ledger's role in Brokeback Mountain, Gibson called the actor a "weirdo" with "a serious drug problem," and callously speculated on the reasons Ledger might have committed suicide.  Gibson had previously mocked Brokeback Mountain--calling it a "gay agenda movie" on his Fox News TV program in 2006.

This is nothing new for John Gibson or Fox News.
A little over a year ago Gibson said (I'm paraphrasing) that you are of the "wrong religion" if you don't believe in Jesus, upsetting many Jewish organizations. He also made numerous comments demeaning immigrant Latino's and Mexicans. Fox News allows him to get away with this crap time and time again and this latest incident will be no different.

The Fox brass will respond by attacking those who complain against them. Fox will accuse complainers of being far left wing liberals or "loons" who want us to lose in Iraq and who side with the terrorists. That’s Fox's standard response to anyone that dares to criticize them, regardless of the subject matter.

The only way to hit them back is to ask Fox’s Corporate sponsors to stop advertising on Fox's airwaves.

I am totally appalled by Gibson's comments! Just for the sake of arguement, you might as well name
Gyllenhaal, Phillip Seymour Hoffman (Capote), Christina Ricci and Charlize Theron (Monster) as examples also. How immature to portray a movie role to an actors real life character! It's a ROLE Not a way of life for the actor! If you actually knew how to act then you would get the reality of how Real a character can be when you believe in that role. Heath plays a role as if he was the real character because he believed in himself and wanted others to believe in the movie. 90% of these actors only give 50% of themselves in a role...When Heath was on the screen he gave 200% of his commitment and integrity! I may not know him personally but I do know that he was a passionate actor and was full of love for his family and friends. My deepest sympathy and love towards his family and friends!!!

Yes, lets all get together and cry about what someone says that in no way affects our daily lives.. makes perfect sense. Instead of worrying about how messed up your life is, lets mess up someone elses so you feel better about yourself! You cant scare his sponsors(cause they are making money) unless you turn this into a racial issue and get Jessie Jackson on your side. Its called freedom of speech and unless its slander, quit crying and change the channel if it offends you.
