GLAAD awards won't be presented in South Florida this year

GLAAD, the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, won't be celebrating its annual media awards in Miami or Fort Lauderdale this year.

"Because of the challenging fundraising environment, our board decided not to have the South Florida event this year," GLAAD spokesman Richard Ferraro said. "We're definitely dismayed by the news."

GLAAD's Spanish-language awards have been presented in South Florida for the past three years. In 2009, those awards will be given at ceremonies in New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco, Ferraro said.

Among the nominees: El Nuevo Herald columnist Daniel Shoer Roth and his newspaper. Also, Herb Sosa and Ambiente magazine are nominated in the digital journalism category.

Ferraro says the door is not closed to resurrecting the South Florida event sometime in the future. "It's been a successful event for us," he said.
