Laura Steckler succeeds Alison Burgos as president and chair of Aqua Foundation for Women

MIAMI, FL - The Aqua Foundation for Women has named Laura Steckler President and Chair effective August 1, 2009 succeeding founder and past Chair Alison Burgos.

56 "The Aqua Foundation for Women is poised to take a greater leadership role in GLBTQ issues in South Florida," Ms. Steckler said. "We are committed to raising our profile while lifting the cause of equality for all. We are grateful for the amazing leadership Alison has provided to bring us here and look forward to involving more women in the community as we launch our next wave of programming and fundraising events."
The Aqua Foundation for Women, founded in 2004, promotes the equality, strength, health and visibility of lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered (LBT) women in South Florida.  With proceeds from events including Aqua Girl, the Foundation provides grants to GLBTQ-focused non-profit organizations, college scholarships, and a mentoring program that matches successful women leaders with recipients of the Foundation's scholarships. 

In 2009, Aqua Girl  celebrated its 10th annual fundraising week held in Miami Beach with a record breaking  9,000 + attendees including women and men of all ages, color and cultures. With 100 percent of the net proceeds benefiting lesbian, bisexual, and transgender women of South Florida, Aqua Girl is not only a week of quality social and cultural events but an opportunity to give back to the community.

"We look forward to building on Aqua Girl's success to raise more funds to support a variety of GLBTQ issues including our community grants program supporting a variety of non-profit organizations and scholarships to needy students," Ms. Steckler said. "There is much work to be done and we look forward to having a lasting impact with our efforts."
