Unfit Fundraiser Invite Small

News release from UNFIT executive producer Edwin Scharlau:

KATE KENDELL TO APPEAR AT FUNDRAISER FOR DOCUMENTARY THAT EXPLORES LESBIAN VS. KILLER CUSTODY CASE

Kate Kendell, Executive Director of the National Center for Lesbian Rights, will be the special guest at a fundraiser for the documentary UNFIT: the Ward vs. Ward story on November 18th from 6-9 pm at the Miami Beach Botanical Garden. The documentary explores a unique custody case where a judge transferred custody of an 11-year old girl from her mother to her father primarily because the mother was a lesbian. The twist that made this case unique was that the father was a convicted murderer having killed his first wife several years earlier. Ms. Kendell represented the mother on the appeal. FOMO Films and Route 7 Productions are joining forces with the National Center for Lesbian Rights, the Miami Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce, and the Miami Gay and Lesbian Film Festival to host this special event with the hopes of raising funds to complete the documentary.

“It truly was a made-for-tv headline – Lesbian vs. Killer,” says Executive Producer Edwin Scharlau. “There is no doubt in my mind that if Mary Ward had not been a lesbian, not only would she have not lost custody of [her daughter], I don’t think she would have ever been sued for a custody change by John Ward given his background,” says Kate Kendell. Although Judge Tarbuck stated the mother’s sexual orientation had nothing to do with his decision, in his ruling he said “I believe this child should be given the opportunity and the option to live in a non-lesbian world…”.

“We have pretty much finished the actual shooting of the documentary and are raising the funds to edit and complete the picture,” says Mr. Scharlau. “We really hope that people come out and support this event and this project. It’s going to be a special night with great drinks, great food, and of course Kate Kendell,” adds Executive Producer Katie Carmichael. The producers also plan on showing clips from the film. Tickets for the event are $30 and can be purchased at www.unfit-themovie.com/events. “It’s a unique story that has to be told,” says Ms. Carmichael, adding “Any time you pick away at injustice, expose cracks or flaws in the system, it can only make us stronger.” The company has recently launched a website (www.unfit-themovie.com) where visitors can learn more about the documentary as well as make tax-deductible donations.
