Jamaican gay activist found stabbed to death, reports J-FLAG, Jamaica Forum for Lesbians, All-Sexuals & Gays

J-FLAG, Jamaica Forum for Lesbians, All-Sexuals & Gays, reports that one of its members was found stabbed to death on Friday. The victim, whose name has not been released, was a 26-year-old male, according to Associated Press.

From J-FLAG's website:

J-FLAG is saddened by the murder of a member of the Lesbian, Gay, Bi-sexual and Transgender (LGBT) Community whose body was found with stab wounds behind the National Solid Life and General Insurance Branch Limited on Half-Way-Tree Road in St Andrew on Friday, November 3, 2010.

This unfortunate event highlights the serious safety and security challenge that confronts the LGBT community in Jamaica, as well as those who engage in sex work. While the reason behind his death is not yet known, allegations are that his life had been under threat for some time. J-FLAG condemns the rampant breach of rights meted out to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) Jamaicans, who are often denied their human rights to life, privacy, respect and dignity because of stigma, discrimination and violence.

We urge the security forces to thoroughly investigate this case so that justice is served. We encourage the Jamaican parliament to demonstrate leadership and publicly condemn violence against all people regardless of their sexual orientation. J-FLAG also encourages Parliamentarians to promote the respect of gay Jamaicans as we work towards making Jamaica the place of choice to live, work, raise families and do business.

Jamaica is a very violent place, full of hatred. Better not to visit.

His lover did it. Most gay crimes in Jamaica are crimes of passion and not anti-gay acts as your news item would have it. Nevertheless, any death, violent or not, gay or straight, is unfortunate. Sympathies to his family and friends.

Jamaica is a very beautiful place. The unlawful people in Jamaica and how they were brought up in society are the problem, and thats just a small fraction. The majority is full of love and kindness, you dont have to visit Jamaica C.V but a lot of sensible persons will.

I am not gay, but I do not like to get off a ship or travel in Jamaica. My experiences there have all been less than favorable. I have no desire to go back.

However, urging people not to go to Jamaica because someone there committed an anti-gay act is a bit overboard. There are bigots and hateful people everywhere. A whole island should not be punished for the misdeeds of one person.

I am sure gays and transgender persons have been violated or killed in South Florida. Yet people still flock to this area.
