It Gets Better founder Dan Savage: Gay boy's suicide after making video 'utterly heartbreaking'

BY STEVE ROTHAUS, srothaus@MiamiHerald.com

Jamey Rodemeyer, a 14-year-old gay boy, killed himself earlier this week after "constant taunting" by bullies at school, his mother Tracy said.

Months before, Jamey recorded an "It Gets Better" video that is still online.

It Gets Better Project founder Dan Savage called Jamey's death "utterly heartbreaking."

"When you watch his video he’s offering words of reassurance to others but he’s clearly speaking about himself," Savage told The Miami Herald.

"Hope isn’t enough. For a lot of kids that’s an abstraction," Savage said. "The bullies, I don’t think they give a shit. You don't know what kind of state the person you’re bullying is in. It can certainly push somebody who’s vulnerable over the edge."

Savage said he sobbed watching Jamey's video. "The whole idea behind the campaign was not that this would end bullying or never be another LGBT suicide. I never thought it would be so ironic."
