‘The Sitter’ actor Sean Patrick Doyle’s success causes him agony of the feet

BY STEVE ROTHAUS, srothaus@MiamiHerald.com

Miami Springs native Sean Patrick Doyle just spent a year on Broadway with La Cage aux Folles, performing as a “Cagelle” in high heels and drag. At the same time, he filmed a featured role as a roller skater in Jonah Hill’s new movie, The Sitter. Next, he’ll be tap dancing in the touring company of Mary Poppins.

“From heels to roller skates, now I’m going to be fitted for tap shoes. My poor feet!” said Doyle, 28, on his way to a fitting for Mary Poppins, in which he’ll play Valentine, “this rag doll the kids are playing tug-of-war with. He comes to life and scares them into submission.”

A 2001 musical theater grad of Miami’s New World School of the Arts, Doyle has traveled the world, performing in touring companies of Fame, West Side Story and Fiddler on the Roof — as the butcher’s dead wife Fruma Sarah.

At age 5, Doyle began taking classes at Actor’s Playhouse in South Florida. He appeared in more than a dozen plays here and moved to New York City in 2007, two years after graduating from Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C.

Doyle, who appeared in a few TV commercials and an episode of Law & Order, calls The Sitter his “major motion picture debut.”

“The movie is about a college student on suspension. It lightly pays homage to Adventures in Babysitting, with Jonah Hill in the central role,” Doyle says. “He embarks on a dramatic chase with drug dealers. I play his flaky, dimwitted roller-skating toadie, Garv.”

Doyle says the character Garv is “flamboyant and eccentric.”

“I would describe him as asexual, but it’s strongly implied he has this sexual relationship” with co-star Sam Rockwell’s character, who calls Garv “Sweet Cheeks.”

At his audition, Doyle fudged his skating credentials a bit.

“Without hesitation, I told her what an accomplished skater I was,” he says. “But I had only been on skates a few times.”

In The Sitter, Doyle wears skates the entire time he is onscreen.

“I’m never seen in shoes,” he says. “I basically had blisters on my feet for weeks.”
