Former child star Kirk Cameron tells Piers Morgan that homosexuality is 'destructive ... to civilization'

Friday night, former child star Kirk Cameron (Growing Pains) told CNN's Piers Morgan that homosexuality is "unnatural"

"I think that it's - it's detrimental, and ultimately destructive to so many of the foundations of civilization," said Cameron, who told Morgan he is a Christian.

Cameron's view on marriage equality:

"Marriage is almost as old as dirt, and it was defined in the garden between Adam and Eve. One man, one woman for life till death do you part. So I would never attempt to try to redefine marriage. And I don't think anyone else should either," explains Cameron. "So do I support the idea of gay marriage? No, I don't."

GLAAD is now speaking out against Cameron and the group has just released this news release:

Last night on CNN’s “Piers Morgan Tonight,” anti-gay actor and former teen idol Kirk Cameron spoke out against marriage equality as well as gay Americans.
Cameron described his personal bias against gay people by saying:
"I think that it's - it's - it's unnatural. I think that it's - it's detrimental, and ultimately destructive to so many of the foundations of civilization."
Click here to tell Kirk Cameron that he’s no longer your idol.
“In this interview, Kirk Cameron sounds even more dated than his 1980s TV character,” said Herndon Graddick, Senior Director of Programs at GLAAD. “Cameron is out of step with a growing majority of Americans, particularly people of faith who believe that their gay and lesbian brothers and sisters should be loved and accepted based on their character and not condemned because of their sexual orientation.”
Piers Morgan disagreed with Cameron when asked what he would do if one of his kids came out. Morgan said: "If one of my sons [came out], I'd say 'that's great son, as long as you're happy.'"
Best known for his role as Mike Seaver on the 1980s television series "Growing Pains", Cameron also spoke out against marriage equality in the interview:
"Marriage is almost as old as dirt, and it was defined in the garden between Adam and Eve. One man, one woman for life till death do you part. So I would never attempt to try to redefine marriage. And I don't think anyone else should either," explains Cameron. "So do I support the idea of gay marriage? No, I don't."
Herndon Graddick of GLAAD responded:
“With an increasing number of states recognizing marriage equality, Americans are seeing that marriage is about committed couples who want to make a lifelong promise to take care of and be responsible for each other and that gay and lesbian couples need equal security and legal protections. That’s not ‘redefining’ anything,” said Graddick.
A new Field Poll released Wednesday found that 59% of California voters favored marriage for same-sex couples while only 34% opposed it. This comes after five 2011 national polls which found that a majority of Americans support marriage equality:
•A Quinnipiac University poll found that 59% of respondents oppose federal legislation that denies eligibility for federal benefits to gay and lesbian spouses.
•A Gallup poll showed 53% of respondents believed that marriages between lesbian and gay couples should be “recognized by the law as valid.”
•Public Religion Research Institute found that 51% support legal marriage for lesbian and gay couples.
•ABC News and the Washington Post found that 51% of respondents said they thought marriage equality should be legal, a 17 percentage-point increase from the 2006 polling results.
•CNN and the Opinion Research Corporation showed 51% of respondents were in favor of legal recognition for marriages for gay and lesbian couples.
GLAAD will be monitoring Cameron’s media bookings and roles with film and television studios to ensure the news and entertainment industry is aware of his outrageous anti-gay views.
Kirk Cameron joins former TV stars Victoria Jackson and Chuck Norris in desperately trying to remain in the public eye by using anti-LGBT rhetoric. Last year, Jackson described a kiss between ‘Glee’ characters Kurt and Blaine as ‘sickening’ and Norris wrote on anti-LGBT site WorldNet Daily that the public education system has devolved into "progressive indoctrination camps” that train students to “forcefully defend issues like abortion and homosexuality, as well as become cultural advocates for political correctness, relativism, globalization, green agendas and tolerance for all.”
Let’s remember that while these once relevant celebrities try to regain notoriety through advancing ignorance, Hollywood’s elite including George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Kevin Bacon, Jamie Lee Curtis, Jane Lynch, and Martin Sheen are using their voices and popularity to move America closer to equality for everyone by participating in 8 the play this evening in Los Angeles. Watch the live stream here.
While Cameron is using his platform to speak out against gay people, his ‘Growing Pains’ co-stars including Leonardo Dicaprio, Brad Pitt and Hilary Swank have spoken out for LGBT equality and are enjoying critically successful careers. Joanna Kerns, who played Cameron’s mom on ‘Growing Pains’ also co-starred in the cult hit ‘All Over The Guy’ as the mother of a gay man.
Today’s teen idols are also standing up for equality in America.   Aziz Ansari, Chris Colfer, Miley Cyrus, Hilary Duff, Dakota Fanning, Zac Efron, Josh Hutcherson, Kristen Stewart, and many more have all spoken out in support of LGBT people. Which teen idol who supports LGBT equality is your favorite? Post your thoughts on our blog!

Thank you God for people like Kirk Cameron....

Cameron is so laughably misguided. He and fellow buffoon Rick Santorum, along with all of the other hate-preachers out there (Falwell, Robertson, etc.), deserve the very condemnation that they so easily espouse for spreading not the word of God (the blanket defense of so many haters), but rather the fears of irrationality. I'm glad that Cameron and his ilk are given public platforms every once in awhile, however, because each time they speak, I have a feeling more and more people are realizing just how indefensibly moronic they are.

"The Tome Cruise is strong with this one." - yoda

"One man, one woman for life till death do you part. So I would never attempt to try to redefine marriage."

So Kirk, are you in favor of a constitutional amendment banning divorces or lethal injections in lieu of divorces?

I may or may not agree with his opinions , but I do agree with freedom of speech

listen God intended it to be Man adn Woman not any other way,it is a Sin you will go to hell.Just because you disgusting people like same sex crap doesnt mean everyone has to like it.As far as Gladd goaway we dont have to agree with you people this is not a comunist country yet,we have Opinions and freedom of speech so quit trying to control what we believe.

@ Norris: I wonder how long it took for you to clean your monitor of the spittle that ejected from your mouth as you typed your hopeful message. Why do people such as yourself condemn homosexuality but never the inbreeding that resulted in your own birth?

we all sin,not one sin is greater then the other. The truth is that God loves all and wishes everyone to be with him in eternity.his word says "i wish that none should parrish". but sin blinds us from the truth. That is why Jesus was born of the virgin Mary.and lived a sinless life.and was condemed to death..He bore all our sins with his blood on the cross.Find a Bible and read the book of John and ask Jesus to show you the truth as you read it.He is real and alive today! He may have had me write this e-mail just for you. eternity is forever!!! where do you want to spend it??

So, where is this "growing majority of Americans" who support gay marriage? When put to a vote of the people, it's 0-31 in the states! The only way the pro-gay crowd can get it "legalized" in states is by throwing piles of money and badgering state governments! People don't vote for it!

I love women. I don't care for Cameron's opinion. I don't judge his way of life. Don't judge mine.

I think he's just upset that he never scored with co-star (and centerfold model) Julie McCullough.

God will judge the unrighteous. You all best be cleaning up your act and turn your life around. Last I read in the Bible it was Adam and Eve, and anyone who wants to defer from that better take it up with the Creator who made you.

Homosexual practice and gay marriage is sinful. I agree and support Kirk's views. Those who fight against God will ultimately lose.

He is absolutely wrong in his premise - people should get their facts before making false statements. Marriage in the church only goes back to the 16th Century. Marriage prior to that was a matter of private arrangement, NOT connected to religion, for the sake of such things as land division, family dowry and power over women.

But really, this silly view of marriage only shows some people have much too vivid imaginations! They only see the lurid side that makes headlines and do not know gays living their lives in the same way as everyone else. Judge not fella lest ye be judged.
is NOTHING that gays do that straight people do not.

Adam and Eve.Let s begin in the Bible.Even Doctors have no clear view of what causes one to become a particular orientation.I feel it s familial and societal for most.Genetic predidposition perhaps for a small minority. It s a mixture. That said....it s true God loves us all nonetheless. We all become humbled before God.

When will Obama come out for gay marriage ?

After 20 years of him listening to the ravings of Rev Wright, do you think honestly that Obama is going to say OK to gay marriage?

I totally support Kirk Cameron and feel EXACTLY the same as him! Notice how all the gays and lesbians, and the liberal media, is going on the attack. THEY are the ones trying to impose their immoral, debaucherous lifestyle / views upon the rest of us!

I agree with Kirk and he has every right to state his opinion - he's an American and a Christian who isn't afraid to stand up for what he believes in. Keep it up Kirk!

Of course, I don't agree with Cameron. But I also don't think that GLAAD's campaign is necessarily effective either.
First of all, if you ask most Christians, they would probably be relieved not to be seen as an "idol" anymore... "Idol Worship" is kinda frowned upon in a big way... along with judgment and false witnessing.
Speaking of being a "false witness", on the other hand, could be very effective. It seems that Kirk Cameron has not opened his Bible lately.
Otherwise he would have learned that marriage is ACTUALLY NOT DEFINED in the story of Adam & Eve, but much later in the Bible. One major difference is that the Bible actually celebrates polygamy... not merely One woman, but many for each man.

Also, in response to "fitzz":
Why do you assume that Rev. Jeremiah Wright would be against Gay Marriage? I think if you scratch the surface on that theory, what you find out might surprise you... It's actually one of many things that the President has NOT followed his former church's position on. If he had followed the good Reverend's lead, he'd be out there stumping for gay marriage right now.

The problem with all of this is that claiming Norris, Cameron and Jackson want to "remain public eye" is A) unproved and in all likelihood, a flat out lie by Mr. Rothhaus, and B) the whole of christianity for the past 2000 years and judaism for thousands of years before that have always taught that homosexuality is unnatural.

Why is stating one's beliefs on an important moral question an attempt to remain relevant?

sometimes I am so ashamed of my fellow americans, we can be such backwards people it is embarrassing

If marriage is so valuable and sacred, why do almost half of marriages end up in divorce?

I'm thankful that there are people like Kirk Cameron who still have the courage to speak out about their biblically-based convictions. Gays are free to be gay. But those of us who believe it is a sinful lifestyle that God wants to redeem them from should also be free to speak as well without being shouted down.

Piers Morgan stated:“I think he was pretty brave to say what he said” Why is one classified as "brave" for uttering a homophobic remark? This little ***-Kirk-should stay locked in his antiquated world along with his "Leave It To ***" re-runs. This is the same guy that runs an Evangelical ministry now, used to be an atheist, and alienated himself from the entire crew of "Growing Pains"(none of whom were at his wedding) What will this Bible thumper come up with next? Check out his birthday party photos on the web- a small birthday cake, subway sandwiches, and a couple of people in the doorway. Boy, does he have a great following!!!!!

The gay mafia...is going hard on the American Public. They are actually trying to make "US" believe nothing is wrong with being gay. It is truly unnatural. Should the world think like GlAAD and most gay or Lesbian people...civilization would stop. Procreation will come to a screeching halt. What's natural about this! Death of the Human race? Man and Man can not have children, woman and woman can not have babies...it's a union based off confusion, and improper genetic makeup. The US can write into Law and give rights to Gays but the US can never change the hearts and minds of "Normal" people. Well I thought 'we' were normal until the GAY MAFIA started selling the message "Gay is Normal" The Morality is this country is dangerously poor...kind of reminds me that Biblical city what was destroyed...what was it...oh yeah (Sodom and Gomorrah)!!!...Oh by the way I'm not a Holy Roller, its just common sense. While some may not agree with my opinion, the US still has "Freedom of Speech" and I'm exercising my right as you will exercise yours.

Interesting how all these "has-been" celebrities come out (no pun intended) against causes like this. Hmm...couldn't be that they want their names in the papers again, could it?

As for the rest of us, there's no point in arguing with the in-bred mouth breathers who are typing all the anti-gay rhetoric on here. Let them stay in their trailers, watching PTL reruns. The world IS changing, and their ranks are slowly diminishing.

One day all truths will come out. Then many will know who was right or wrong. The Bible does does not approve gay lifestyle.

I know that if you think being gay is great just ask your self how did I get here, did my dad and mom lie to me. I was born out of love from a man and a woman, Created so that I can continue to create life as it was given to me, not stop it.I do believe that no sin is greater than any other but deep down in your hearts you know that when you were a little toddler you loved being with your mom and your dad, I can't say this for the rest of the unfortunate ones that did not grow up with parents but god never and would never forsake the orphans and not love you, if anything he loves you more than any biological parent can love a child. ASK JESUS IF YOU DON'T BELIEVE ME. AC.

Kirk conveniently forgets Mathew 7:3. The GLBT community is justified by grace because God created us in his image. The self-righteous who think they have a monopoly on the word of God need to concentrate on their own sins and pray that they may be humbled to overcome them. As for the destruction of civilizations: Kirk was a little dramatic don't you think? Ignorance is what destroys civilizations in one generation and it's people like him that feed the hate mongers. Kirk unfortunately is too self-righteously arrogant to appreciate the power of his vile words. On the bright spot God has creative ways of humbling us. GLBT Children would serve him right.

Good thing for straight people...........because without them.............it would have been impossible for gay people to exist.Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.Now wait a minute.Let s not get scientific....That might just blow our cover.Hmmmmm

Interesting how the bashers cannot even seem to put together a coherent sentence. Jesus condemns bad spelling and grammar. It is an abomination.

Seriously, a homosexual kiss on Glee was 'sickening', but the countless other shows that promote violence and hatred are okay?

Homosexuality is a learned behavior!

Yes! Homosexuality is a learned behavior and it is not genetic. If you donot believe it, take a good look at those career prisoners who can be both heterosexuals as well as homosexuals. Think about the time when we were all virgins at some point in our life, and how we had to fumble around to learn the ways of our sexuality. Everyone has to learn the ropes of sexual preference of our choice, as we grow.

Imagine, two five year old boys end up in an island all by themselves because of a ship wreck. Let us assume that they grow together without much difficulty. When they reach puberty, they will learn to release their sexual feelings, and there is a good possibility that they both could release their sexual desires as homosexual partners! But if those children are male and female, they will become natural heterosexual partners. (Remember, Blue Lagoon movie?)

Human sexuality is a learned behavior, and it is expressed through a conscious choice we make, and not through genetics. As male, one may have 90 percent of feminine genetic characteristics. But yet, that person's sexual preference will be by choice, and not by one's genetic composition. To say boldly that one is born with certain sexual preference is the biggest lie of twenty first century. People who are really confused about their own identity, and lack understanding become victims to these lies. As Romans 1:26-28 says, their mind is darkened and it becomes reprobate mind. God created male and female for procreation, stewardship and companionship. Just because some Religious denominations say black is white will not make the black as white. Let us not be deceived!

Stand by the roads and look. Ask for the ancient path. Where the good road is, walk in it, and find rest for your soul! This is not a Democratic or Republican issue. This is actually a basic human civilization issue that is under attack by dark forces. Fads may come and go but the Word of the Lord will reign forever and ever. The word, "Marriage" is a sacred word that stands for the union between man and woman. Let us not compromise it for any other illegitimate relationship. Let a Gay call his union as something else. perhaps "GayRage". I have no problem allowing the gays and lesbians to have their legal rights, whatever that may be, but have serious concern about sharing the sacred word "Marriage" with their evolved, pseudo relationship.

This country is supposed to be one nation under God, and not under devil. Let us stand firm and fight against this same sex marriage issue in USA. Let us not be foolish to invite wrath of God to United States of America! Homosexulity is nothing but a Sexual preference for a deviant behavior, an alternate style of living that is contrary to the very purpose of God's intention, and it is an abomination before the sight of God. Let us not compromise and sell the word "Marriage" that easily. Let that word stand alone as a unique word that clearly points to the union between man and woman alone!

@ Dan. Your homophobic rhetoric is is ridiculous.
1)You actually use the Blue Lagoon as a premise for a statement? Wow you probably think the National Enquirer is a real Newspaper.
2)Show me in the Book of Genisis where the word marriage pops up. Please.
3) I would like to see your degree in genetics and Psychology, not to mention the studies that show Homopsexuality is a choice or learned behavior.
4)In regards to Marriage. If marriage is so sacred to heterosexuals why are divorce rates so high?
5) In regards to reprobate minds. Why are fathers molesting their own daughters. Why are most Phedophiles heterosexual? If homosexuality is so wrong, why do heterosexual couples keep having homosexual children.
In ending you show your current line of thinking may have to be looked at again. You are just regurgitating old biases and archaic opinions. And one last thought why out of all species where homosexuality exists. That humans are the only ones that seem to be confused by the genetics of it all.

I watched the interview and thought Kirk handled himself with dignity and class, and in no way was he disrepectful to anyone. He merely was asked a question and answered it. Even if I don't fully agree with him, I believe in his right to express an opinion. The same rights that gays or any other group should/do have. To me, the conversation should be about freedom of speech, and the outrage over expressing an opinion without fear of backlash/criticism from the liberal media/celebrities who want everyone to think the way they do.

I can't believe the hypocrisy. How can you post a picture of a perfectly good person on the internet and call him an "anti-gay extremist". Did anyone even watch the video? I don't know about you, but I didn't find him as an extremist or even a hateful person. Gay rights people always point fingers at Christians and call them "homophobic" or "extremists" when we don't agree with your opinions. But, just look at yourselves. This is a perfectly nice person, who has six children at home. Four of which he had the good heart to adopt. Don't you think of anything except yourselves, when you post these hateful pictures? Don't you think of what it will be like for his family and his children when they find these hateful pictures?

I believe that everyone on this planet has a right to be happy. Love is love, whether it's man and woman, man and man, woman and woman... It doesn't matter. However, everybody also has a right to what they believe in, and if Kirk Cameron believes this, he has a right to say what he feels. However, freedom of speech, and trying to get people to change their own minds, THAT is what is wrong in this situation...

Why does this article tell me to tell Cameron that, "Click here to tell Kirk Cameron that he’s no longer your idol". I'm tiered of the media telling me what to think. The man is entitled to his Opinion. Give me a break what ever so called objective journalist reported on this interview. You're a joke.

Yedi, that portion is identified as a news release from GLAAD. Everyone here is entitled to post their opinion, including you.
