'God Hates Gays': Utah construction sign hacked

News release from Equality Utah and PFLAG National:

SALT LAKE CITY, UT—PFLAG National, the nation's largest grassroots-based non-profit for families, friends, and allies of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people, and Equality Utah, Utah’s largest advocacy and policy organization working on behalf of LGBT people in that state, both issued statements today in response to a mobile construction zone sign on I-15 that was hacked to read, “God Hates Gays.”

Max Green, Advocacy Coordinator for Equality Utah, responded saying, “Equality Utah views the incident regarding the I15 construction sign as an act of outright bias which has no place in our community. Messages like this reaffirm the need for inclusive statewide nondiscrimination protections for all Utahns, including LGBT people. After speaking with both Provo City and UDOT we understand that this was an egregious hacking of state property, and join them in denouncing this unacceptable message. This situation is another demonstration of the need for further dialogue to understand the LGBT community, as this incident clearly does not represent Utahns nor our common values of respect and dignity.”

PFLAG National’s Mountain West Regional Director, Kathy Godwin, concurred stating, “It is infuriating and appalling that a sign owned and operated by a public company contracted by a city agency was hacked in such a fashion. As a PFLAG leader in Utah, my organization and I work tirelessly to eliminate this type of blatant vitriol and discrimination. We applaud the City of Provo, UDOT, and the private contractor for taking swift action on this matter and having the message removed. However, we are once again reminded of the dire need for laws in our state that will protect LGBT people from discrimination and hateful messaging. That our state legislators are silent on issues of LGBT discrimination results in tacit approval of unsafe and unhealthy circumstances, which lead directly to situations such as this hacked road sign.  This was a deliberate, purposeful, and hateful action, one, which took planning, and forethought. It is threatening to my family, to me, and to all LGBT people and their loved ones here in the state of Utah.”
