Plantation American Heritage QB Torrance Gibson gets invite to Elite 11 after all

Plantation American Heritage quarterback Torrance Gibson left for Nike World Headquarters in Beaverton, Oregon on Sunday -- a day earlier than his counterparts participating in The Opening.

Gibson -- who was invited to The Opening as an athlete and not the Elite 11 quarterback competition -- will participate in the Elite 11 after all, but not be in the running for the title crowing the country’s best high school quarterback.

Gibson will get to train and practice with the other 18 quarterbacks in the event on Sunday and Monday. He’ll move over to wide receiver when The Opening begins Tuesday and catch passes during the 7-on-7 competitions, according to Todd Huber, a personnel director for the event.

Gibson -- a five-star prospect who is deciding to attend Tennessee, Auburn, Ohio State, LSU, Oklahoma, Miami and Central Florida -- is taking his opportunity to show off his quarterback skills in stride.

“It means a lot!” Gibson said in a text message Sunday afternoon. “All I want to do is play QB and the Elite 11 is giving me the shot to play QB. It’s a humbling experience.”

***Stay tuned Saturday night for my story with the inside scoop on the three University of Miami running backs, and the Canes’ biggest target at the position, all attending The Opening.***
