Alexis Grace's exit interview post-Idol

TV American Idol NYET417 Alexis Grace left American Idol Wednesday and the show immediately went into the proverbial toilet. Here's some of what she had to say in a conference call:

Your performance of Dolly Parton's Jolene seemed more anguished the second time around as the judge's made you sing for your life (and then didn't seem to be paying attention anyway). Did you think of doing it differently?

I just went up there and sang what I was feeling. It wasn't like I was trying to be anything or do anything a certain way. I just wanted to show them that I wanted to stay.

Idol always struck me as a bit ... stupid. The judges don't like your performance of a song but then ask you to sing the same song you were kicked off the program for to evaluate if you should get to stay or not. (Even typing this sentence reinforces how retarded this whole process is). Do you think you could have convinced them otherwise with a different song?

I'm going to be honest. I think it could have. I think if I sang the first song that I sang, Never Let Them In, that maybe I would still be there. I don't know. I think that Jolene is a beautiful song and I love to sing it. I don't think it was their favorite performance, so I really didn't get to really show them and remind them again why they picked me or why America picked me. I probably would have chosen a different song if I
could.

Did you think the judges would use their one-time-only Judges' Save this early in the season?

I was like maybe they could save me possibly. It is really early in the game and it wouldn't be good for TV if they did so early, so in the back of my mind I was like, oh, maybe not. Maybe they want to save it, but it just wasn't the right time. I liked the fact that they told me that they were thinking about saving me because they let me know that they actually believe in me and that they think that I can do it.

Did you consider another song for country night?

I did consider doing a Carrie Underwood song, but there were already two other people who sang Carrie Underwood, so I felt that it would be too much Carrie Underwood in one night. So then I went with Jolene because that was a really beautiful song. I loved the lyrics. I like the singer and so I thought it was a good song for me to do.

Who knew Alexis was such a Tom Jones fan!

I think it started happening a long time ago, actually. My mom likes Tom Jones a lot and I just like his voice. It just puts me in a good mood. As a matter of fact, I think I probably should have listened to some Tom Jones last night. It would have helped out a lot.

You should have gone further. Only the Top 10 tour in the summer. Disappointed?

I'm really disappointed about that. I would have loved to have gone on tour, especially with all those guys. I'm really close with them and I know that they're going to do really well. It would have been fun to do some duets with some of those people, too, but there will be other tours. I was disappointed because I'd imagine myself going farther than that. It was a little bit surprising to myself, not surprising because I kind of had a feeling that I would be in the bottom, but I never imagined myself going home that early. I figured I'd stay in the game a little bit longer, so I was disappointed a little bit, because I made it that
far.  It's like I want to make it a little bit farther at least.

Who did you bond with the most?

Matt and Megan. Well, for one thing, [Matt] cracks me up. He's like hilarious. He's always making jokes and doing riffs and runs all the time. We just have a good time together and then Megan because we're pretty much like the same. We both have kids the same age. She has a boy, I have a girl. We always joked about how on tour, our son or daughter would be boyfriend and girlfriend.

Were you upset when Randy kept calling you Allison that last night?

Yes, a little bit, but I think maybe that's just because that's just his personality
maybe. Maybe not because I'm forgettable, hopefully not, but yes, I did make a face when
he said Allison. I was like hmmm, he means Alexis.

I totally think Megan Corkery should have gone home last week. Either that or Scott "he's a nice guy, and hey, he's blind". But certainly not Alexis. That said, it wasn't her best performance, and I thought she seemed more nervous performing it for her life.

On the other hand, I'm already really sick of the whole schtick with the new rule, and telling Alexis that they were thinking about saving her was just downright mean. Talk about putting a contestant on the spot. I'll bet they milk this for all it's worth . . . I wouldn't be surprised at all if they give the "we're thinking of saving you" routine to more than half of the contestants.
