ERRO at Art Miami Big Fair

image from http://miamiherald.typepad.com/.a/6a00d83451b26169e201b7c7f469e7970b-pi

There were many works at the Art Basel fair that conveyed the tenor of the times -- a yearning for peace, a disdain for war.

Galerie Perrotin brought a monumental work by ERRO, an 83-year-old postmodern artist born in Iceland and now living in Paris.

Gallery owner Emmanuel Perrotin says the artist has been undervalued, but he expects that to change, particularly when people revisit the work currently on exhibit at his booth, "God Bless Bagdad".

"We know it will be a rediscovery for many people," Perrotin says.

The mural on three panels spans roughly 10 x 16 feet and shows then President George W. Bush and Iraqi President Saddam Hussein and missiles of mass destruction, as well as Iranian ayatollahs, one with the name "Cabu" written on his turban. The artist was prescient, as Cabu was the Charlie Hebdo cartoonist who was killed by terrorists earlier this year.

The mural -- although created in 2004 -- illustrates the ongoing terror threat in Paris and the rest of the world.

Galerie Perrotin, which is located near where the most recent terror attacks took place in Paris in November, had decided to bring ERRO's mural earlier in the year.

"We arranged the shipping of this work before the attack," Perrotin says, adding, "We were affected by the attack. The first week we had 50 percent less visitors. We are all a target."

Valentine Blondel, who also works at the gallery, echoed Perrotin's assessment.

"We all know people who died," she says. "We all have a friend who has friends who died."

Art Miami opening night: Big works, big crowd

After 13 years of Miami art fairs, some regulars say they are cutting back on the number of fairs and events they attend. (“We’re being very economical about what we’re going to,” said Yolanda Berkowitz. Still, she, husband Jeffrey, a developer, and other selective artgoers were among the 11,000-plus VIP guests at Tuesday’s invitation-only opening of Art Miami.

Fair director and principal Nick Korniloff said the number of requests for VIP credentials this year exceeded 2014, despite a softening economy in Latin America and Europe’s migration crisis. That included Leonardo Dicaprio, who got a private preview of the fair before the hordes arrived. Korniloff said he expected to pass last year’s total visitor count of $82,500. Still, Tuesday night there seemed to be fewer European and South American accents than in years past.

At Art Miami, they found more blue chip works than ever, including a massive 9-plus foot kinetic Calder sculpture for $12.8 million, a rare 1980s collaboration between Andy Warhold and Jean-Michel Basquiat for $3.4 million, and an unusual 1960s painting that by Alma Thomas that graced the cover of her 1972 solo show at the Whitney -- the first African American female artist to be featured there. (Asking price: $950,000.) Works by Robert Rauschenberg, Alex Katz, Keith Haring, Ai Wei Wei, Damian Hirst, John Chamberlain, Christopher Wool and Kehinde Wiley covered booth walls. The Frank Stella retrospective now at the Whitney seemed to bring Stellas out of the closet; at least eight were for sale.

Also for sale in a booth near the café were jackets, hoodies and T-shirts with the message Look@ Art, Not your Phone, to encourage teens to enjoy the outdoors. Last summer, Nick Korniloff and his wife, fair marketing director Pamela Cohen, lost their teenage son Perry Cohen in a storm while fishing. Sales of the clothing, designed by The Original Inside Pocket Company, help support the Perry J Cohen foundation for boating safety education.

Miami Art Week traffic alert

Traffic is always interesting in Miami-Dade, but thanks to the closure of the Venetian Causeway for repairs, getting from the Beach to the mainland threatens to be even more painful than usual.

The good news: Several local governments have collaborated on free shuttles. And the Related Group has worked with Uber to bring Uberboat for the length of the fair. Plus, the water taxis promise to be running on a schedule. Find the lowdown here.

$5,000 reward for return of Picasso piece pilfered from Art Miami

Picasso's Visage aux Mains. 1956

The premier satellite fair to Art Basel Miami Beach says it will pay for the return of artwork by Pablo Picasso valued at $85,000.

Art Miami became the scene of a crime this week when someone snatched the piece, a 1956 engraved silver plate titled Visage aux Mains (Face with Hands). The fair on Saturday offered a $5,000 reward to whoever brings it back by 6 p.m. Sunday.

"No questions asked," said Nick Korniloff, the fair's director and partner.

Silver Picasso plate stolen from Art Miami fair

PicassoVisageAuxMains

A silver plate crafted by Spanish master Pablo Picasso was stolen, apparently overnight, from Art Miami in Midtown, the premier satellite fair to Art Basel Miami Beach.

David Smith, owner of the Amsterdam-based Leslie Smith Gallery, said he arrived at the booth Friday morning to find an empty plate holder on the wall where the artwork hung Thursday night.

“I’ve been doing art shows all my life. Even when I was a kid, I went with my parents,” he said. “I’ve never, ever had anything stolen.”

Smith reported the theft to the show and to Miami police, who came and dusted for fingerprints, he said.

The 1956 piece, Visage aux Mains (Face with Hands), is a 16.5-inch-wide silver plate engraved with, naturally, a face and hands. It’s Number 16 in a 20-plate series, Smith said, and is valued at about $85,000.
