New Raleigh Hotel owner Tommy Hilfiger, gallerist Jeffrey Deitch, and V Magazine editors have tapped Miley Cyrus to perform at Wednesday’s big Art Basel opening-night party. A far cry from previous edgy performers, such as Beth Ditto and The Gossip, but we’re sure Cyrus and her tongue will make for a spectacular spectacle.
So Basel is a celeb magnet. Or is it? An art-world insider admonishes us, telling us it’s not about the stars at all, saying “[The annual fair] Art Basel is a snore for the E! Network. It’s more for The Wall Street Journal crowd. The real story is that in the last two weeks, the auctions in New York have processed over $2 billion in sales. Miami should be a bit of a money orgy again this year.”
That being said, in addition to the unannounced celebs who are actually in town to see art, there will be appearances at parties by an ex-ubiquitous reality star, the one who launched a thousand Kardashians, DJ Paris Hilton, among others. Yes, that’s DJ Paris now.
Miami photographer Robert Curran, whose works appear in the collections of, among other people, the King of Jordan, is opening his own gallery Thursday at 74 NE Fourth St., showcasing his extensive collection of travel photos. The opening will be hosted by supermodel Petra Nemcova.
“Robert has been a dear friend of mine since I started Happy Hearts, which helps to rebuild safe-resilient schools in places hit by natural disaster,” Nemcova, a survivor of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, told us. “We have traveled the world together, and his works represent his love of travel and discovering all cultures living on this planet. Hosting this event lets me now support one of his great loves, photography.”
