Is Art Basel ready for Miley Cyrus?

By Lesley Abravanel | lank@aol.com

New Raleigh Hotel owner Tommy Hilfiger, gallerist Jeffrey Deitch, and V Magazine editors have tapped Miley Cyrus to perform at Wednesday’s big Art Basel opening-night party. A far cry from previous edgy performers, such as Beth Ditto and The Gossip, but we’re sure Cyrus and her tongue will make for a spectacular spectacle.

So Basel is a celeb magnet. Or is it? An art-world insider admonishes us, telling us it’s not about the stars at all, saying “[The annual fair] Art Basel is a snore for the E! Network. It’s more for The Wall Street Journal crowd. The real story is that in the last two weeks, the auctions in New York have processed over $2 billion in sales. Miami should be a bit of a money orgy again this year.”

That being said, in addition to the unannounced celebs who are actually in town to see art, there will be appearances at parties by an ex-ubiquitous reality star, the one who launched a thousand Kardashians, DJ Paris Hilton, among others. Yes, that’s DJ Paris now.

Miami photographer Robert Curran, whose works appear in the collections of, among other people, the King of Jordan, is opening his own gallery Thursday at 74 NE Fourth St., showcasing his extensive collection of travel photos. The opening will be hosted by supermodel Petra Nemcova.

“Robert has been a dear friend of mine since I started Happy Hearts, which helps to rebuild safe-resilient schools in places hit by natural disaster,” Nemcova, a survivor of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, told us. “We have traveled the world together, and his works represent his love of travel and discovering all cultures living on this planet. Hosting this event lets me now support one of his great loves, photography.”

Basel Bites: Where to eat during Miami Art Week

Miami.com Restaurants editor Evan Benn has put together his list of where you want to eat during Art Basel week, from new spots in Miami to pop-up's just for the week.

Below is a look at some of his picks, but click here for the complete list.

THE NEW

27 Restaurant & Bar: (Pictured). Hip hostel/hangout Freehand Miami Beach, home to top cocktail bar Broken Shaker, has opened its much-anticipated restaurant with a menu that leans toward the Mediterranean and Latin America. 2727 Indian Creek Dr., Miami Beach. 305-531-2727.

Midtown Oyster Bar: The group behind Salumeria 104, Spris and Segafredo has opened its latest, a New England-style oyster bar, in midtown Miami. Fill your belly with raw, broiled or fried bivalves in this cozy nook. 3301 NE First Ave., Miami. 786-220-2070.

Stripsteak: San Francisco-based über-chef Michael Mina set up shop in the former Gotham Steak at the Fontainebleau Miami Beach. It’s his second restaurant at the resort; he opened Michael Mina 74 right before last year’s Basel. 4441 Collins Ave., Miami Beach. 877-326-7412.

THE POP-UPS

Michael’s Genuine Food & Drink Café: Chef Michael Schwartz returns to Design Miami, located outside the Convention Center, with his pop-up MGFD Café, offering hot and cold dishes, coffee, wine and beer, and sweets from Hedy Goldsmith. Michy’s Pop Up: Chef Michelle Bernstein is renovating her flagship Michy’s on Biscayne Boulevard, but that doesn’t mean she won’t have a presence at Art Basel. Her new Seagrape restaurant opened last month in the new Thompson Miami Beach, and she has two pop-ups cooking at the Miami Beach Botanical Garden. The dinner-only Michy’s Pop Up requires reservations. Open Wednesday-Saturday 6-11 p.m. michyspopup.com; 877-222-1742.
