Martin Gutierrez Channels His Inner Brigitte Bardot at Pulse -- Ryan Lee Gallery S-200

image from http://miamiherald.typepad.com/.a/6a00d83451b26169e201b7c7f4c9a2970b-pi

Many female artists -- including "gender fluid" Martin (accent over the "I") Gutierrez -- took center stage at galleries in the main and satellite fairs.

Gutierrez was the focal point of the New York-based Ryan Lee Gallery at Pulse, in a beachfront tent next to the Eden Roc in Miami Beach. (S-200)

"He would say people who have known him for a long time call him 'he,'" says gallery co-owner Jeffrey Lee. "But people who met him more recently tend to use the "she" pronoun."

Gutierrez, who styles and photographs himself with mannequins, also has pop star persona "Martine" -- which is pronounced the same as his male birth name. He makes hilarious art videos using that persona.

At only 26, Gutierrez both transcends gender and the role-playing portraiture practiced by Cindy Sherman and Yasumasa Morimura, the latter who famously dressed up to look like Frida Kahlo in native Mexican costumes. Unlike Sherman and Morimura, who pose alone, Gutierrez has a cast of characters, all mannequins that have his same svelte physique and are dressed in similar fashion, with similarly-style hair and make-up.

"He so gets himself," Lee says. "To live in a world where you transcend social norms and not feel self-conscious about it -- that's amazing."

Art Basel: Pulse launches 10th year with move to Miami Beach

Pulse Art Fair on Miami Beach

Pulse Art Fair has long been one of the off-the beaten path fairs during Miami Art Week, having spent many years taking place in a film studio and event space west of the mainland's downtown. But now in its tenth year, Pulse moves to the beach and has joined other fairs on the sand such as Untitled and Scope with its own temporary home just north of the Eden Roc.

Representing Miami at the fair is non-profit art space Dimensions Variable, who has works by Miami-based painter Joseriberto Perez and Brooklyn-based mixed media artist Jude Broughan. The works on display are more modest in scale than the flashier works in other booths, but they're also intelligent and affordable for budding collectors looking to find solid works.

At the Mixed Greens booth, artist Naomi Reis created a series of works under the title Borrowed Landscapes (Tropics of Africa, Asia and the Amazon via Brooklyn). Here she created collages using washi paper and Mylar to depict tropical landscapes; those collages are rested on top of a larger wall mural so they perfectly align with the mural.

Perhaps the most timely work at the fair is by artist collaborative Ghost of a Dream at the David Contemporary booth. Their work has its own visual pleasures with sleek geometric patterns created on various surfaces with cool blue hues. But their installation ($60,000 for the whole work, individual pieces starting at $10,000) is actually made almost entirely of detritus.
