Art Basel: Untitled Art Fair Opens with Strong Showing of Emerging Contemporary Artists

Untitled opened today for VIPs in its airy, beach-perched tent designed by Keenen Riley Architects on the sands across from Ocean Drive. The scene was more casual and less frenzied than other fairs but galleries we spoke with reported strong sales on their first day.

Booths with bold visual impacts were a draw such as Galerie Antoine Ertaskiran, whose booth was anchored by a site-specific installation by artist Dominique Pétrin; her works appear to be drawn from the Memphis Group, a prolific 80s Italian design house. But we overheard artistic director Omar López-Chahoud fawning over a minimal booth installation by Galerie Christian Lethert, who decided to make the focal point of a booth a work by Lutz Fritsch that was a simple thin red aluminum rod.

Among the highlights were two particularly strong showings by contemporary African American artists. Devin Troy Strother at Richard Heller Gallery had a solid showing of works that appropriates historically racist depictions of African Americans, but his new body of neon works, which utilizes this unfortunate iconography, were particularly intriguing. Nina Chanel Abney, who also has works on view at the Rubell Family Collection's show, at Kravets Wehby had numerous works on view that drew on police brutality against African Americans through paintings that combined various forms of the craft including spray paint, acrylic and stencil that were rendered in graphic, almost comic-like visuals.

Satellite fairs bring art beyond Art Basel

Ferris Loves Art

Satellite fairs on both sides of the causeways are big draws in their own right.
