Docs go political

Pediatricians at the University of Miami's Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine and Jackson's Holtz Children's Hospital plan to protest President Bush's expected veto of a Democratic-backed children's health insurance bill.

Leading the protest is Lee Sanders, associate professor of pediatrics at the Miller School who says it's "not a political issue. It’s a moral issue. In such a wealthy nation, it’s unconscionable that all children do not have access to medical care. Something has to be done."

The docs hope the protest helps their local reps change their minds on the legislation: The bill passed the Senate last week with a veto-proof majority of 67 votes, but the vote in the House wasn't large enough to overcome a veto.

Those voting against the measure included Miami Republicans Reps. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen and Lincoln and Mario Diaz-Balart.

Bush, who has said he believes the bill is a step toward federalizing health care, says he supports extending the children's health program - but not as the Democratic Congress has proposed.
