With no sign of a big-name challenger, Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Alvarez formally qualified for re-election late last week. His only declared opponent is Helen Williams, a former teacher, and she has not yet qualified.
On the County Commission, all seven incumbents whose terms are up plan to seek re-election. Two of them, Carlos Gimenez and Natacha Seijas, have already qualified. So have two challengers: attorney Val Screen, running against Audrey Edmonson, and event promoter Whilly Bermudez, running against Joe Martinez.
The qualifying period runs through June 17.
