Help for Haiti: two different tracks

With Haiti taking a vicious blow this hurricane season by back-to-back storms, two South Florida Democrats urged authorities to let Haitians living in the United States stay here.

"'It is now more imperative than ever that the United States grant Haitian immigrants Temporary Protected Status,'' Broward Democrat Rep. Alcee Hastings told a House Foreign Affairs subcommittee. ''TPS is the least expensive, most immediate form of humanitarian assistance we can provide Haiti."

Hours after the hearing, Miami Republicans Reps. Lincoln and Mario Diaz-Balart and Ileana Ros-Lehtinen announced they'll meet with Bush administration officials to push for the status, meant to provide foreign nationals in the United States with work permits and a safe haven until it is safe for them to return home.
