Lemack endorses former opponent Israel for sheriff

Richard Lemack said today that he is endorsing Scott Israel for Broward sheriff.

Lemack, Hollywood assistant city manager, and Israel, North Bay Village police chief, battled through a bruising five-way Democratic primary. Israel narrowly beat Lemack.

Lemack was silent the first few weeks after the Aug. 26 primary about whether he would get involved in the general election. But last week, Lemack attended a fundraiser for Israel who is running against Republican Sheriff Al Lamberti.

"I am endorsing the Democratic candidate,'' Lemack said. "I ran on my history as a lifelong Democrat. I am going to stand by my party affiliation.''

Israel and Lemack both said they didn't discuss if Israel should win whether he would hire Lemack to work at the Broward Sheriff's Office.
