Senate economist warns that economic fix No. 1 is: fix insurance

Dr. Rick Harper, of the Haas Center for Business Research at the University of West Florida, who was hired to offer recommendations to the Senate Select Committee on the Economy offered this warning today:

"When I look at the risks of this housing-driven recession, what is Florida specifc that needs to fix overtime is we need fundamental catastrophic risk insurance reform,'' he said.

"Our tax structure is based on a growing population and growing sales tax revenues over time and to restore that population growth we need to get the insurance question right and we need to get the property tax question right. Those two fundamental issues are very central to Florida 5 to 10 years from now.''
