Rep. Dean Cannon, the Winter Park Republican who's acting as the No. 1 House negotiator on the budget, issued a statement in response to Sen. J.D. Alexander's insistence on extending the 2009 session until the budget breakdown is resolved.
"As both President Atwater and Speaker Cretul indicated, talks aren't over. Folks are continuing to run numbers this weekend and I anticipate that they'll continue talking on Monday," Cannon said. "Right now all the discussions are at the presiding officer level, and I know they are both doing their best to come to a resolution. If they reach agreement on total revenues and total expenditures, then we'll have to look at where we are on the calendar and decide when and how to conference and prepare a final budget. It's more important that we do it right than that we do it quickly."
