Trump flunkie bests House candidates in fundraising

Jose "Pepi" Diaz, a 29-year-old Miami lawyer who has never run for public office before, raised nearly $113,000 in the past three months -- the most money among candidates statewide for the Florida House.

Diaz appeared on season 5 of Donald Trump's reality TV show, "The Apprentice" before he joined the Akerman Senterfitt law firm. He's a Republican candidate for the District 115 seat currently held by J.C. Planas.

Diaz even outraised powerful incumbents like Dean Cannon, who will be speaker of the House in 2010. "I'm a neophyte,'' Diaz said, "But I'm good at reading other people's reports and finding out who their big donors are."

Diaz was student government president at the University of Miami and was the first Hispanic to be named Florida College Student of the Year. He received his law degree at Columbia University.
