Sen. Lawson rails against pay increases for contractors

Sen. Al Lawson is calling on the state to investigate provisions that allow contract employee pay raises while many state employees are facing pay cuts.

"The little known provisions are included in contracts struck with private vendors by the Department of Transportation and likely other agencies, with little accountability or oversight," reads a news release from the Florida Senate Democratic Office. "In January, for example, as Florida's economy continued to deteriorate, an engineering firm under contract with the DOT began collecting under an escalation clause a 3 percent pay hike."

Lawson, D-Tallahassee, urged GOP leaders to order an investigation into the clauses. He made the call as he urged Gov. Charlie Crist to veto the state employee salary cuts. Under the budget deal, anyone making more than $45,000 gets a 2 percent pay cut, a state savings of $25 million.
