Broward Sheriff: budget cuts hurt ability to go after pain clinics

Lt. Gov. Jeff Kottkamp met with Broward Sheriff Al Lamberti today in Fort Lauderdale to discuss the massive problem of pain clinics.

Kottkamp is collecting ideas from Lamberti and others about how to limit these clinics which dispense prescription drugs.

Broward County leads the state with 89 clinics, Lamberti said. And a federal survey showed that the majority of the top prescribers nationwide are based in Broward.

"It's an area where we should put more resources but because of budget cuts we are not going to be able to do it,'' he said.

Lamberti and county commissioners battled about budget cuts this summer and eventually came to a compromise proposed by the sheriff that include about $21 million in cuts from the county-funded portion of his budget.
