Republican Rick Scott announced today he will join Democrat Alex Sink and participate in the Oct. 8 gubernatorial debate on spanish-language television, Univision, in Miami. The match-up will be the first between the two candidates for governor and will take place before early voting starts, allowing voters to get an early glimpse of the candidates.
Both Scott and Sink have also agreed to participate in the debate sponsored by the Leadership Florida and the Florida Press Association on Oct. 20. Scott has also agreed to do an Oct. 24 debate sponsored by CNN and the St. Petersburg Times but Sink has not signed onto that yet.
Said Scott spokeswoman Bettina Inclán: “This is another opportunity for Rick to continue the conversation with the Spanish-speaking community of Florida that he has engaged in since he announced his candidacy for governor. He looks forward to a spirited debate on the issues that matter to Floridians, like creating jobs in the state, cutting reckless spending, and lowering taxes on families and small businesses.”
Sink noted however that it took Scott a while to agree to address Florida's Spanish speaking voters, saying she called on him again last week to join her. "As I have said for weeks, Spanish-speaking Floridians deserved to hear directly about our records and plans for Florida, so I’m glad Rick Scott finally agreed to join me for Univision’s statewide debate,'' she said in a statement. "I called for five statewide televised debates and urge Rick Scott to agree to that plan and stop hiding from the people of Florida.”
