Carolyn Timmann, the head of Gov. Rick Scott's very busy Office of Open Government, is leaving to run for clerk of Martin Circuit Court.
Timmann has had many a fire, literally and figuratively, to handle during her year in Scott's administration. (She was the first to smell smoke from the cigar-sparked trash can fire in Lt. Gov. Jennifer Carroll's office. The investigation report shows Timmann picked up the flaming can, ran it into the women's restroom and doused it with water from a flower vase.)
In her role, Timmann is often the target of anxious reporters and governor's staff alike who, from time to time, can have different readings of Florida's open record laws.
She has also survived Scott's equivocations over how best to handle the open records office. Initially a responsibility of his chief of staff, the office was handed off to a deputy chief in August and now resides under legal. Another change in the office was outsourcing requests for transition records about the time Scott's staff realized the transition team let dozens of e-mail accounts, including Scott's, get deleted. As the Florida Department of Law Enforcement investigation into those e-mails approaches its fifth month, Timmann's office is once again taking transition requests.
